An-Nawawi said, in his Tahdhib: As-Siddiq was one of the Companions who memorised all of the Qur’an.
A large group have mentioned this also, of them Ibn Kathir in his tafsir. As for the tradition of Anas, ‘Four gathered together (i.e.
memorised entirely) the Qur’an in the time of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace,’ what he meant was ‘of the Ansar as I made clear in the book al-Itqan. As for that which ash-Shacbi said, ‘Abu Bakr as-Siddiq, may Allah be pleased with him, died without gathering (memorising) all of the Qur’an,’ it is rejected, or it can be interpreted that he meant by ‘gathering’, I.e. in a mushaf with the organisation (of surahs and ayat) which 'Uthman gave it, may Allah be pleased with him.
