During the khilafah ofcUmar, may Allah be pleased with him, those of the notable companions who died were: cUtbah ibn Ghazwan, al-cAla’ ibn al-Hadrami, Qais ibn as-Sakan, Abu Quhafah the father of as-Siddiq, may Allah be pleased with him, Sacd ibn cUbadah, Suhayl ibn cAmr, Ibn Umm Maktum the mu’adhdhin, cAyyash ibn Abi Rabicah, cAbd ar-Rahman the brother of az-Zubayr ibn al- ‘ Awwam, Qais ibn Abi Sacsacah one of those who memorised all of the Qur’an, Nawfal ibn al-Harith ibn cAbd al-Muttalib, his brother Abu Sufyan, Mariyah the mother of the Sayyid Ibrahim (the son of the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, who died in infancy), Abu cUbaydah ibn al-Jarrah, Mucadh ibn Jabal, Yazid ibn Abi Sufyan, Shurahbil ibn Hasanah, al-Fadl ibn al-cAbbas, Abu Jandal ibn Suhayl, Abu Malik al-Ashcari, Safwan ibn al-Mucattal, Ubayy ibn Kacb, Bilal the muadhdhin, Usayd ibn al-Hudhayr, al- Bara’ ibn Malik the brother of Anas, Zaynab bint Jahsh, Tyad ibn Ghanam, Abu’l-Haytham ibn at-Tayyihan, Khalid ibn al-Walid, al-Jarud the chief of Bani cAbd al-Qais, an-Nucman ibn Muqarran, Qatadah ibn an-Nucman, al-Aqrac ibn Habis, Sawdah bint Zamcah, cUwaym ibn Sacidah, Ghilan ath-Thaqafi, Abu Mihjan ath-Thaqafi, and other Companions, may Allah be pleased with all of them.
