he usul (principal) linguistically is the foundation that can be built on it, whether the building is tangible, as building a wall up on a foundation, or rational as building the reasoned rule upon the reason and building the verdict upon its evidence (dalil). So usul al-fiqh are the foundations (qawa'id) on which the fiqh can be built.
