A abelha assimila sucos de vários tipos de flores e frutas e forma o mel dentro de seu corpo, que armazena em suas células de cera. Somente há alguns séculos os seres humanos passaram a saber que o mel provém do ventre da abelha. Mas este fato foi mencionado no Alcorão há 1.400 anos, no seguinte versículo:

The bee assimilates juices of various kinds of flowers and fruit and forms honey within its body, which it stores in its cells of wax. Only a couple of centuries ago humans came to know that honey comes from the belly of the bee. But this fact was mentioned in the Qur’an 1,400 years ago in the following verse:

"Dos seus ventres sai uma bebida de cores variadas, na qual há cura para os homens." [Al-Qur’an 16:69] Só agora tomamos conhecimento de que o mel tem propriedades curativas e também é um antisséptico suave. Os russos usavam mel para cobrir suas feridas durante a Segunda Guerra Mundial. A ferida retinha a umidade e deixava muito pouco tecido cicatricial. Devido à densidade do mel, nenhum fungo ou bactéria conseguia crescer na ferida.

“There issues from within their bodies a drink of varying colours, wherein is healing for men.” [Al-Qur’an 16:69] We are only now aware that honey has healing properties and is also a mild antiseptic. The Russians would use honey to cover their wounds in World War II. The wound would retain moisture and would leave very little scar tissue. Due to the density of honey, no fungus or bacteria could grow in the wound.

O conhecimento contido no Alcorão sobre o mel, sua origem e propriedades, foi descoberto séculos após sua revelação.
