मधुमक्खी विभिन्न प्रकार के फूलों और फलों के रस को एकत्र करती है और अपने शरीर के भीतर शहद बनाती है, जिसे वह मोम की अपनी कोशिकाओं में संग्रहित करती है। केवल कुछ सदियों पहले ही मनुष्यों को पता चला कि शहद मधुमक्खी के पेट से आता है। लेकिन इस तथ्य का उल्लेख 1,400 वर्ष पहले कुरआन में इस आयत में किया गया था:

The bee assimilates juices of various kinds of flowers and fruit and forms honey within its body, which it stores in its cells of wax. Only a couple of centuries ago humans came to know that honey comes from the belly of the bee. But this fact was mentioned in the Qur’an 1,400 years ago in the following verse:

"उसके पेटों से एक पेय निकलता है जिसके रंग विभिन्न होते हैं, जिसमें मनुष्यों के लिए उपचार है।" [अल-कुरआन 16:69] हम अब जाकर यह जान पाए हैं कि शहद में उपचारात्मक गुण हैं और यह एक हल्का रोगाणुरोधक (एंटीसेप्टिक) भी है। द्वितीय विश्वयुद्ध में रूसी लोग अपने घावों को ढकने के लिए शहद का उपयोग किया करते थे। इससे घाव में नमी बनी रहती थी और उसमें बहुत कम निशान-ऊतक (स्कार टिश्यू) बनता था। शहद के घनत्व के कारण घाव में न तो कोई फफूंद और न ही कोई जीवाणु पनप सकता था।

“There issues from within their bodies a drink of varying colours, wherein is healing for men.” [Al-Qur’an 16:69] We are only now aware that honey has healing properties and is also a mild antiseptic. The Russians would use honey to cover their wounds in World War II. The wound would retain moisture and would leave very little scar tissue. Due to the density of honey, no fungus or bacteria could grow in the wound.

किसी विशेष पौधे से एलर्जी से पीड़ित व्यक्ति को उसी पौधे से प्राप्त शहद दिया जा सकता है, ताकि उस व्यक्ति में उस एलर्जी के प्रति प्रतिरोधक क्षमता विकसित हो जाए।

A person suffering from an allergy of a particular plant may be given honey from that plant so that the person develops resistance to that allergy.

शहद में फ्रुक्टोज़ और विटामिन K भी भरपूर मात्रा में पाए जाते हैं।

Honey is also rich in fructose and vitamin K.

कुरआन में शहद, उसकी उत्पत्ति और उसके गुणों के बारे में मौजूद ज्ञान की खोज उसके अवतरण के सदियों बाद हुई।

The knowledge contained in the Qur’an regarding honey, its origin and properties, was discovered centuries after its revelation.
