O que devemos fazer para a concretização do ideal que o Islã nos apresenta?

What ought we to do for the realization of the ideal Islam sets forth before us?

Dado que o Islã é o melhor sistema existente sobre a face da terra e que, como mostram a nossa posição histórica, geográfica e internacional, o Islã é o nosso único meio de recuperar a honra, a liderança e a justiça social neste mundo, a questão é: por onde passa o caminho que conduz à concretização da ideologia islâmica num mundo hostil a ela e na presença de governantes ditatoriais em algumas terras muçulmanas que a combatem ainda mais ferozmente do que os seus inimigos estrangeiros?

Granted that Islam is the best system to be found on this earth and that as our historical, geographical as well as international position shows, Islam is our only means to regain honor, leadership and social justice in this world, the question is whither lies the way that leads to the realization of Islamic ideology in a world hostile to it and in the presence of the dictatorial rulers in some Muslim lands who fight against it even more furiously than its enemies from abroad do?

Sim, para onde é o caminho? O que devemos fazer? A resposta é que existe um único caminho para alcançar o objetivo islâmico, como sempre foi o caso com todos os movimentos que surgiram na história humana, e esse caminho, em uma palavra, é: a Fé.

Yes, whither is the way? What ought we to do? The answer is that there is one and only one way to attain the Islamic goal as there has always been the case with all the movements springing up in human history and that in one word is: Faith.

Foi essa mesma fé que ajudou os primeiros muçulmanos: ela continua sendo a única força capaz de ajudar a presente geração deles. Nossa postura e nossa posição hoje, como muçulmanos, não diferem em nada daquela assumida pelos primeiros muçulmanos. Eles eram apenas um punhado de homens, mas se dispuseram a lutar contra dois dos estados mais poderosos e orgulhosos daquela época: o Império Romano à sua esquerda e o Persa à sua direita. Ambos os adversários eram muito superiores a eles em homens, riquezas materiais, arte da guerra, ciência militar e também em perspicácia política. Apesar disso, aconteceu o grande milagre, e o punhado de muçulmanos subjugou tanto os Césares quanto os Kosroes em menos de meio século. Conquistaram seus vastos territórios, que se estendiam do Oceano Índico ao Atlântico. Como se deu esse milagre?

It was this very faith that helped the early Muslims: it still remains the only force that can help their present generation. Our stand and position today as Muslims is not in the least different from that taken up by the early Muslims. They were just a handful of men but were out to fight against two of the most powerful and proud states of that time, the Roman Empire on their left and the Persian to their right. Both of these adversaries were far superior to them in men, material wealth, art of war, military science as well as political insight. But despite this the great miracle happened and the handful of Muslims overpowered both the Caesars as well as the Kosroes in less than half a century. They captured their vast territories stretching from the Indian Ocean to the Atlantic. How did this miracle happen?

No materialistic interpretation of history can adequately explain this great miracle.

A única coisa com a qual podemos desvendar o seu mistério é a fé, e somente a fé. Foi essa mesma fé que levou um desses primeiros muçulmanos a se levantar e dizer: "Não é verdade que nada se interpõe entre mim e o Paraíso, senão que eu vá e mate este homem (ou seja, o descrente que luta contra os muçulmanos) ou seja morto por ele?" E, ao dizer isso, avançava em direção ao campo de batalha tão despreocupado, como se fosse abraçar sua noiva. Ou então saltava no campo de batalha, dizendo aos seus adversários:

The one thing with which we can unravel its mystery is faith and faith alone. It was this very faith that made one of these early Muslims stand up saying: "Is it not true that nothing intervenes between me and paradise but that I should go and kill this man (i.e. the unbeliever fighting against Muslims) or get killed by him?" And then saying this he would advance towards the battlefield as tight-heartedly as if he were going to embrace his bride. Or he would jump into the field saying to his adversaries:

"Você espera por nós senão por uma de duas coisas excelentes: a vitória ou o martírio?" Esse é, portanto, o caminho para alcançar nossos objetivos, pois esse sempre foi o único caminho diante de qualquer outro movimento surgido na história.

"Do you await for us but one of the two most excellent things: victory or martyrdom?" That then is the way to realize our objectives as this has always been the only course before any other movement originating in history.

Existem certas pessoas que nos perguntam, algumas por sinceridade e outras por causa de sua mentalidade derrotista, onde estão as armas necessárias para este propósito. Armas?

There are certain people who ask us, some out of sincerity and others because of their defeatist mentality, as to where is the necessary weaponry for this purpose. Weapons?

Sim, nós precisamos de armas, mas não devemos ignorar o fato de que a primeira e mais importante exigência para nós não são as armas, pois as armas, por si sós, não podem ajudar uma nação nem um pouco nesse aspecto. Durante a última Guerra Mundial, os italianos possuíam os armamentos mais eficazes e letais, mas, ainda assim, isso não foi capaz de salvá-los, nem puderam alcançar com eles qualquer sucesso glorioso. Eles se destacaram em apenas uma coisa: fugir do campo de batalha, deixando todas as suas armas nas mãos dos inimigos. O que eles queriam não eram armas, mas fé e inspiração.

Yes, we do need weapons, but we must not overlook the fact that the first and the foremost requisite for us is not the weapons, for weapons only can not in this respect help a nation in the least. During the last World War the Italians possessed most effective and deadly weaponry, but still it could not save them, nor could they achieve with it any glorious success. They excelled in one thing only: running away from the battlefield leaving all their weapons in the hands of their enemies. What they wanted was not weapons but faith and inspiration.

Por outro lado, encontramos um punhado de combatentes inspirados cuja força total não excedia, no máximo, cem homens, e cujas incursões noturnas nunca incluíam mais de seis ou sete homens de cada vez, de modo que perturbaram tanto os líderes de impérios velhos e decrépitos que preferiram abandonar o país a esse punhado de homens a enfrentá-los. Este fiel grupo de guerreiros não possuía armas mortais; não tinha artilharia pesada, caças a jato nem blindados. Lutavam com revólveres, espingardas e fuzis comuns, mas tinham consigo uma arma muito mais letal do que a que seus inimigos possuíam: possuíam fé! Tinham em si o espírito que o pequeno punhado de muçulmanos dos primeiros tempos tinha, lutando no caminho de Deus, matando os descrentes ou sendo mortos por eles. Foi assim que triunfaram contra probabilidades tão adversas.

On the other hand, we find that a handful of inspired fighters whose total strength did not exceed a hundred men at the most and whose nocturnal raiding parties never included more than six or seven men in a party at a time, so perturbed the leaders of senile old empires that they preferred leaving the country to those handful of men rather than conquer them. This faithful band of warriors did not possess deadly weapons; they did not have heavy artillery, jet-fighters or the armored corps. They fought with ordinary revolvers, guns and rifles but they had with them a weapon far deadlier than what their enemies possessed: they possessed faith! They had in them the spirit the early handful of Muslims had, fighting in the way of God killing the non-believers or themselves getting killed by them. That is how they succeeded against such heavy odds.

Sabemos que o caminho que escolhemos para nós mesmos não é coberto de flores. Trata-se, antes, de uma via que exige suor, sangue e lágrimas. Ela demanda sacrifícios, auto-imolação, provações e a disposição de nos esforçarmos ao máximo. Mas nisso não há nada de estranho, pois o mesmo ocorre com todo outro movimento. Os sacrifícios são inevitáveis. Não há atalho para o sucesso.

We know that the path we have chosen for ourselves is not strewn with flowers. It is rather a way that calls for sweat, blood and tears. It demands sacrifices, self-immolation, tribulations and a readiness to exert ourselves to the utmost. But there is nothing strange in this, for similar is the case with every other movement. Sacrifices are inevitable. There is no short cut to success.

Mas por que não deveríamos nos esforçar ao máximo e estar prontos a sofrer pela causa elevada que temos diante de nós — pela honra, pela glória e pela justiça social — quando os sacrifícios que já experimentamos por causa do opróbrio, da difamação, da pobreza, da fraqueza e da desintegração não são menos grandes e severos do que os sacrifícios exigidos pelo Islã? Milhões de homens de diferentes nacionalidades árabes foram mortos na última Guerra Mundial; milhares de outros pereceram pelos bombardeios dos aviões aliados; propriedades foram destruídas e um grande número de homens foi feito prisioneiro; todos os recursos materiais foram confiscados sem nenhuma luta contra os conquistadores por parte de seus possuidores. Mesmo assim, depois de sofrer tudo isso, o Sr.

But why should we not strive hard and be ready to suffer for the lofty cause before us-for honor, glory and for social justice when the sacrifices already experienced by us because of opprobrium, obloquy, poverty, weakness and disintegration are no less great and severe than the sacrifices called for by Islam? Millions of men from different Arab nationalities were killed in the last World War; thousands more perished by the bombardment of the Allied planes; properties were destroyed and a large number of men were made prisoners; all material resources were confiscated without any fighting against the conquerors on the part of their possessors. But still after suffering all this Mr.

Churchill não ficou satisfeito conosco. Disse-nos francamente: "Nós vos salvamos. Agora paguem-nos o preço por isso." Não faz muito tempo que as potências ocidentais estavam tão ansiosas para que os árabes concordassem em firmar um pacto de defesa conjunta com elas. O seu verdadeiro propósito era incorporar pelo menos meio milhão de árabes em suas forças armadas, para testar sobre eles as suas armas mortíferas e, assim, poupar os homens brancos da América e da Inglaterra de seus efeitos letais. Ao fazê-lo, apoderaram-se à força de toda a produção alimentar do mundo árabe, expuseram o seu povo à humilhação e à desgraça e, quando finalmente já não precisavam dos seus serviços, expulsaram-nos.

Churchill was not satisfied with us. He told us bluntly: "We have saved you. Now pay us the price for it." It was only a short while ago that the western powers were so anxious to get the Arabs agree to conclude a joint defense pact with them. Their real purpose was to incorporate at least half a million Arabs in their armed forces so as to try their deadly weapons on them and thus save the white men of America and England from their deadly effects. In doing so they forcibly captured all the food production of the Arab world, exposed its people to dishonor and disgrace and when at last they no longer needed their services, kicked them out.

Certamente não há como escapar da morte, dos sacrifícios e das tribulações. Homens morreram até pela ignomínia e pela falta de glória: pelo menos meio milhão deu a vida na última Grande Guerra, lutando pelos Aliados. Por que deveríamos então recuar diante de dar a nossa vida pelo Islã, pela glória e pela verdade? Quando houver meio milhão de homens (tantos quantos morreram pelos Aliados!) prontos a dar a vida pelo Islã, os resultados certamente serão diferentes. Não restará sequer um único ditador insolente e tirano sobre esta terra, e não haverá então imperialismo cristão ou pagão a desfilar com arrogância. Isso não mostra como podemos alcançar nosso objetivo? Este é o caminho.

There is, of course, no escaping from death, from sacrifices and tribulations. Men died even for ignominy and ingloriousness: half a million at least laid their lives in the last Great War fighting for the Allies. Why should we then flinch back from laying down our lives for Islam, for glory and truth? When there are half a million men (as many as died for the Allies!) ready to lay down their lives for Islam the results will surely be different. There shall not remain even a single insolent dictator and tyrant on this earth, there will be no Christian or heathen imperialism to strut abroad then. Doesn't that show how we can achieve our goal? There is the way.

Algumas pessoas se mostram perturbadas com a expansão do comunismo no mundo moderno. Mas, na verdade, não há motivo para preocupação, pois, no que diz respeito ao Islã, a situação mundial não sofreu nenhuma mudança. Os países hoje sob controle comunista são os que faziam parte da Cristandade antes do advento do comunismo e, como tal, eram tão hostis ao Islã e aos muçulmanos quanto são hoje. A Rússia, por exemplo, mesmo antes da Revolução Comunista, costumava enviar grupos de infiltrados aos Estados muçulmanos para semear dissensão e discórdia entre os muçulmanos.

Some people are perturbed over the spread of communism in the modern world. But in fact there is nothing to he upset about that, for so far as Islam is concerned the world situation has not undergone any change whatsoever. The countries under communist control at present are what formed a Part of Christendom before the advent of communism and were as such as hostile to Islam and Muslims are they are today. Russia, for instance, even before the Communist Revolution used to send groups of infiltrators into the Muslim states to sow dissension and discord among the Muslims.

Da mesma forma foi o caso da Europa. Ela travou cruzadas contra o mundo muçulmano no passado e ainda está envolvida nessa guerra. Nada mudou desde então no que diz respeito aos muçulmanos ou ao Islã.

Similar was the case with Europe. It fought crusades against the Muslim world in the past and is still engaged in that war. Nothing has changed since then so far as the Muslims or Islam is concerned.

Nessa situação, nossa posição também deve permanecer inalterada. Estamos exatamente onde os primeiros muçulmanos estavam quando se viram cercados à direita e à esquerda por dois dos países mais poderosos daquela época.

In such a situation, our standpoint must also remain unchanged. We stand exactly where the early Muslims stood when they were hemmed in from right and left by two of the most powerful countries of that time.

É animador observar que, apesar de todos os obstáculos e da oposição implacável, as forças islâmicas estão ganhando força dia após dia. No conjunto, o renascimento do Islã parece inevitável.

It is heartening to note that despite all hurdles and ruthless opposition, Islamic forces are gathering strength day by day. On balance, the revival of Islam seems but inevitable.

No mundo de hoje, o Islã está destinado a desempenhar um papel tão glorioso quanto o que desempenhou nos primeiros dias de sua história. Ele promete paz e tranquilidade a um mundo totalmente absorvido pelos prazeres e ganhos materiais e, como consequência disso, atingido por conflitos e perturbações. O Islã estabelece um equilíbrio entre a matéria e o espírito e, por isso, é a única esperança para a humanidade sair da confusão atual. Assim, o mundo está fadado, mais cedo ou mais tarde, a perceber a importância do Islã e a adotar seus princípios, mesmo que não o abrace formalmente como sua religião.

In the world today, it is destined to playas glorious a role as it played in the first days of its history. It promises peace and tranquility to the world of today which is wholly taken up with material pleasures and gains, and is as a result thereof stricken with conflicts and disruptions. Islam strikes a balance between matter and spirit, and is thus the only hope for humanity to get out of the present mess. As such the world is bound sooner or later to realize the importance of Islam and adopt its principles even if it does not formally embrace it as its religion.

Quanto a nós mesmos, os trabalhadores do Islã, admitimos plenamente que o caminho que se estende diante de nós não é um leito de rosas. Nós, muçulmanos, teremos de oferecer sacrifícios, grandes e numerosos, para convencer o mundo da bondade intrínseca e da verdade do Islã. Mas lembremo-nos sempre de que o único caminho para esse fim é o da autoimolação:

As to ourselves-the workers of Islam-we admit that we are fully alive to the fact that the path before us is not a bed of roses. We Muslims will have to offer sacrifices-great and many sacrifices, in order to convince the world of the intrinsic goodness and truth of Islam. But let us ever bear in mind that the only way towards that end is but that of self-immolation:

"Deus certamente auxiliará aqueles que O auxiliam (a Sua causa), pois, em verdade, Deus é forte, Poderoso, (capaz de fazer prevalecer a Sua vontade)" (xxii: 40).

"God will certainly aid those who aid His (cause): for verily God is full of strength, Exalted in might, (Able to enforce His will) (xxii: 40).
