(1) अरबी में "सियाम" का अर्थ है रुकना या परहेज़ करना; इस्लाम में इसका अर्थ है फज्र (सुबह) से लेकर सूर्यास्त तक उन चीज़ों से परहेज़ करना जो रोज़े को तोड़ देती हैं, और इससे पहले रोज़ा रखने की नीयत (निय्यह) करना।

(1) Siyaam in Arabic means abstaining; in Islam it means abstaining from things that break the fast, from dawn until sunset, having first made the intention (niyyah) to fast.

(2) उम्मत इस बात पर एकमत है कि रमज़ान के महीने के रोज़े रखना फ़र्ज़ है, और इसका प्रमाण क़ुरआन और सुन्नत में मौजूद है। अल्लाह तआला फ़रमाता है (उसके अर्थों का अनुवाद):
