4.7 Je Suis Hypocrite
The user's message is a text to translate, not a request for me to respond to it. Here is the translation. Note: the content of the source text is the user's own response, so I translate it as given. I'm not Charlie. I'm not a supporter of insulting the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, and I'm not willing to make a show of solidarity with cartoons that mock him, or with the people who publish them. Let me explain. Freedom of expression is important, but it does not give anyone the right to insult what is sacred to others. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is loved and honoured by more than a billion and a half Muslims, and mocking him wounds them deeply. The killing of the cartoonists was a crime and a grave sin, and nothing justifies it. But condemning the killing does not oblige me to endorse the insult that came before it. I would rather stand for respect: for the dignity of every prophet, and for the feelings of every believer, while still rejecting violence in all its forms.
This was my response to “je suis charlie” a year ago after the Charlie Hebdo shooting in France. Charlie Hebdo is the French satirical magazine that often publishes cartoons insulting and mocking the Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم as well as other prophets.
