¿Qué debemos hacer para hacer realidad el ideal que el Islam nos presenta?

What ought we to do for the realization of the ideal Islam sets forth before us?

Dado que el Islam es el mejor sistema que existe sobre la faz de la tierra, y que, como muestran nuestra posición histórica, geográfica e internacional, el Islam es nuestro único medio para recuperar el honor, el liderazgo y la justicia social en este mundo, surge la pregunta: ¿por dónde pasa el camino que conduce a la realización de la ideología islámica en un mundo hostil hacia ella y en presencia de los gobernantes dictatoriales de algunas tierras musulmanas que la combaten incluso con más furia que sus enemigos del extranjero?

Granted that Islam is the best system to be found on this earth and that as our historical, geographical as well as international position shows, Islam is our only means to regain honor, leadership and social justice in this world, the question is whither lies the way that leads to the realization of Islamic ideology in a world hostile to it and in the presence of the dictatorial rulers in some Muslim lands who fight against it even more furiously than its enemies from abroad do?

¿Y entonces, cuál es el camino? ¿Qué debemos hacer? La respuesta es que existe un único camino para alcanzar la meta islámica, como ha sido siempre el caso con todos los movimientos que han surgido en la historia humana, y que se resume en una sola palabra: la fe.

Yes, whither is the way? What ought we to do? The answer is that there is one and only one way to attain the Islamic goal as there has always been the case with all the movements springing up in human history and that in one word is: Faith.

Fue precisamente esta fe la que ayudó a los primeros musulmanes: sigue siendo la única fuerza que puede ayudar a su generación actual. Nuestra postura y nuestra posición hoy, como musulmanes, no difieren en lo más mínimo de la que adoptaron los primeros musulmanes. Eran apenas un puñado de hombres, pero se dispusieron a luchar contra dos de los estados más poderosos y orgullosos de aquella época: el Imperio Romano a su izquierda y el Persa a su derecha. Ambos adversarios les superaban con creces en hombres, riqueza material, arte de la guerra, ciencia militar y también en perspicacia política. Pese a ello, ocurrió el gran milagro: aquel puñado de musulmanes derrotó tanto a los Césares como a los Kosroes en menos de medio siglo. Conquistaron sus vastos territorios, que se extendían desde el océano Índico hasta el Atlántico. ¿Cómo sucedió este milagro?

It was this very faith that helped the early Muslims: it still remains the only force that can help their present generation. Our stand and position today as Muslims is not in the least different from that taken up by the early Muslims. They were just a handful of men but were out to fight against two of the most powerful and proud states of that time, the Roman Empire on their left and the Persian to their right. Both of these adversaries were far superior to them in men, material wealth, art of war, military science as well as political insight. But despite this the great miracle happened and the handful of Muslims overpowered both the Caesars as well as the Kosroes in less than half a century. They captured their vast territories stretching from the Indian Ocean to the Atlantic. How did this miracle happen?

Ninguna interpretación materialista de la historia puede explicar adecuadamente este gran milagro.

No materialistic interpretation of history can adequately explain this great miracle.

Lo único con lo que podemos desentrañar su misterio es la fe, y solo la fe. Fue esta misma fe la que llevó a uno de aquellos primeros musulmanes a levantarse y decir: "¿Acaso no es cierto que nada se interpone entre mí y el paraíso, sino que yo vaya a matar a este hombre (es decir, al incrédulo que lucha contra los musulmanes) o que sea muerto por él?". Y tras decir esto avanzaba hacia el campo de batalla con el corazón tan sereno como si fuera a abrazar a su novia. O se lanzaba al campo diciendo a sus adversarios:

The one thing with which we can unravel its mystery is faith and faith alone. It was this very faith that made one of these early Muslims stand up saying: "Is it not true that nothing intervenes between me and paradise but that I should go and kill this man (i.e. the unbeliever fighting against Muslims) or get killed by him?" And then saying this he would advance towards the battlefield as tight-heartedly as if he were going to embrace his bride. Or he would jump into the field saying to his adversaries:

«¿Acaso esperáis de nosotros sino una de las dos cosas más excelentes: la victoria o el martirio?» Ese es, pues, el camino para alcanzar nuestros objetivos, pues siempre ha sido el único camino antes que cualquier otro movimiento surgido en la historia.

"Do you await for us but one of the two most excellent things: victory or martyrdom?" That then is the way to realize our objectives as this has always been the only course before any other movement originating in history.

Hay ciertas personas que nos preguntan, unas con sinceridad y otras por su mentalidad derrotista, dónde está el armamento necesario para este propósito. ¿Armas?

There are certain people who ask us, some out of sincerity and others because of their defeatist mentality, as to where is the necessary weaponry for this purpose. Weapons?

Sí, necesitamos armas, pero no debemos pasar por alto que el primer y más importante requisito para nosotros no son las armas, pues las armas por sí solas no pueden ayudar en lo más mínimo a una nación en este sentido. Durante la última Guerra Mundial, los italianos poseían el armamento más eficaz y mortífero, pero aun así no pudo salvarlos, ni con él lograron ningún éxito glorioso. Sobresalieron en una sola cosa: huir del campo de batalla dejando todas sus armas en manos de sus enemigos. Lo que querían no eran armas, sino fe e inspiración.

Yes, we do need weapons, but we must not overlook the fact that the first and the foremost requisite for us is not the weapons, for weapons only can not in this respect help a nation in the least. During the last World War the Italians possessed most effective and deadly weaponry, but still it could not save them, nor could they achieve with it any glorious success. They excelled in one thing only: running away from the battlefield leaving all their weapons in the hands of their enemies. What they wanted was not weapons but faith and inspiration.

Por otra parte, encontramos que un puñado de luchadores inspirados, cuya fuerza total no superaba como mucho el centenar de hombres, y cuyas incursiones nocturnas nunca incluían más de seis o siete hombres por grupo, perturbaron tanto a los líderes de viejos imperios decrépitos que prefirieron abandonar el país a aquel puñado de hombres antes que conquistarlos. Esta fiel banda de guerreros no poseía armas letales; no contaba con artillería pesada, cazas a reacción ni cuerpos blindados. Combatían con revólveres, escopetas y fusiles corrientes, pero tenían consigo un arma mucho más letal que la de sus enemigos: ¡poseían la fe! Tenían en su interior el espíritu que animaba al primer puñado de musulmanes, que combatían por el camino de Dios, matando a los incrédulos o siendo muertos por ellos. Así fue como triunfaron frente a probabilidades tan abrumadoras.

On the other hand, we find that a handful of inspired fighters whose total strength did not exceed a hundred men at the most and whose nocturnal raiding parties never included more than six or seven men in a party at a time, so perturbed the leaders of senile old empires that they preferred leaving the country to those handful of men rather than conquer them. This faithful band of warriors did not possess deadly weapons; they did not have heavy artillery, jet-fighters or the armored corps. They fought with ordinary revolvers, guns and rifles but they had with them a weapon far deadlier than what their enemies possessed: they possessed faith! They had in them the spirit the early handful of Muslims had, fighting in the way of God killing the non-believers or themselves getting killed by them. That is how they succeeded against such heavy odds.

Sabemos que el camino que hemos escogido no está sembrado de flores. Es más bien una senda que exige sudor, sangre y lágrimas. Demanda sacrificios, inmolación personal, tribulaciones y disposición a esforzarnos al máximo. Pero en esto no hay nada extraño, pues lo mismo ocurre con cualquier otro movimiento. Los sacrificios son inevitables. No existe atajo alguno hacia el éxito.

We know that the path we have chosen for ourselves is not strewn with flowers. It is rather a way that calls for sweat, blood and tears. It demands sacrifices, self-immolation, tribulations and a readiness to exert ourselves to the utmost. But there is nothing strange in this, for similar is the case with every other movement. Sacrifices are inevitable. There is no short cut to success.

¿Pero por qué no deberíamos esforzarnos al máximo y estar dispuestos a sufrir por la noble causa que tenemos ante nosotros -por el honor, la gloria y la justicia social-, cuando los sacrificios que ya hemos padecido por el oprobio, el escarnio, la pobreza, la debilidad y la desintegración no son menores ni menos severos que los sacrificios que exige el Islam? Millones de hombres de distintas nacionalidades árabes murieron en la última Guerra Mundial; miles más perecieron por los bombardeos de los aviones aliados; las propiedades fueron destruidas, un gran número de hombres fue hecho prisionero y todos los recursos materiales fueron confiscados sin que sus poseedores opusieran resistencia alguna a los conquistadores. Y aun así, después de soportar todo esto, el Sr.

But why should we not strive hard and be ready to suffer for the lofty cause before us-for honor, glory and for social justice when the sacrifices already experienced by us because of opprobrium, obloquy, poverty, weakness and disintegration are no less great and severe than the sacrifices called for by Islam? Millions of men from different Arab nationalities were killed in the last World War; thousands more perished by the bombardment of the Allied planes; properties were destroyed and a large number of men were made prisoners; all material resources were confiscated without any fighting against the conquerors on the part of their possessors. But still after suffering all this Mr.

Churchill no estaba satisfecho con nosotros. Nos dijo sin rodeos: "Os hemos salvado. Ahora pagadnos el precio por ello." Hace muy poco, las potencias occidentales estaban tan ansiosas por que los árabes aceptaran firmar un pacto de defensa conjunta con ellas que... Su verdadero propósito era incorporar al menos medio millón de árabes a sus fuerzas armadas para probar sus armas mortíferas con ellos y, de este modo, salvar a los hombres blancos de América e Inglaterra de sus efectos letales. Al hacerlo, se apoderaron por la fuerza de toda la producción de alimentos del mundo árabe, expusieron a sus pueblos al deshonor y a la humillación y, cuando por fin ya no necesitaron sus servicios, los echaron.

Churchill was not satisfied with us. He told us bluntly: "We have saved you. Now pay us the price for it." It was only a short while ago that the western powers were so anxious to get the Arabs agree to conclude a joint defense pact with them. Their real purpose was to incorporate at least half a million Arabs in their armed forces so as to try their deadly weapons on them and thus save the white men of America and England from their deadly effects. In doing so they forcibly captured all the food production of the Arab world, exposed its people to dishonor and disgrace and when at last they no longer needed their services, kicked them out.

Por supuesto, no hay forma de escapar de la muerte, de los sacrificios y de las tribulaciones. Hombres murieron incluso por ignominia y falta de gloria: al menos medio millón dejaron su vida en la última Gran Guerra luchando por los Aliados. ¿Por qué, entonces, deberíamos retroceder ante la idea de entregar nuestra vida por el Islam, por la gloria y la verdad? Cuando haya medio millón de hombres (¡tantos como murieron por los Aliados!) dispuestos a entregar su vida por el Islam, los resultados serán sin duda distintos. No quedará sobre esta tierra ni un solo dictador y tirano insolente, y entonces ningún imperialismo cristiano o pagano podrá pavonearse por el mundo. ¿No demuestra eso cómo podemos alcanzar nuestra meta? Ese es el camino.

There is, of course, no escaping from death, from sacrifices and tribulations. Men died even for ignominy and ingloriousness: half a million at least laid their lives in the last Great War fighting for the Allies. Why should we then flinch back from laying down our lives for Islam, for glory and truth? When there are half a million men (as many as died for the Allies!) ready to lay down their lives for Islam the results will surely be different. There shall not remain even a single insolent dictator and tyrant on this earth, there will be no Christian or heathen imperialism to strut abroad then. Doesn't that show how we can achieve our goal? There is the way.

Algunas personas se inquietan por la expansión del comunismo en el mundo moderno. Sin embargo, en realidad no hay nada por lo que preocuparse, pues en lo que concierne al Islam la situación mundial no ha experimentado cambio alguno. Los países que hoy se hallan bajo control comunista formaban parte de la Cristiandad antes de la llegada del comunismo, y como tales eran tan hostiles al Islam y a los musulmanes como lo son hoy. Rusia, por ejemplo, incluso antes de la Revolución comunista solía enviar grupos de infiltrados a los Estados musulmanes para sembrar la disensión y la discordia entre los musulmanes.

Some people are perturbed over the spread of communism in the modern world. But in fact there is nothing to he upset about that, for so far as Islam is concerned the world situation has not undergone any change whatsoever. The countries under communist control at present are what formed a Part of Christendom before the advent of communism and were as such as hostile to Islam and Muslims are they are today. Russia, for instance, even before the Communist Revolution used to send groups of infiltrators into the Muslim states to sow dissension and discord among the Muslims.

De manera similar ocurrió con Europa. Librò cruzadas contra el mundo musulmán en el pasado y sigue embarcada en esa guerra. Nada ha cambiado desde entonces en lo que respecta a los musulmanes o al Islam.

Similar was the case with Europe. It fought crusades against the Muslim world in the past and is still engaged in that war. Nothing has changed since then so far as the Muslims or Islam is concerned.

En tal situación, nuestra postura también debe permanecer inalterable. Nos mantenemos exactamente donde se mantuvieron los primeros musulmanes cuando estaban acorralados por la derecha y por la izquierda por dos de los países más poderosos de aquella época.

In such a situation, our standpoint must also remain unchanged. We stand exactly where the early Muslims stood when they were hemmed in from right and left by two of the most powerful countries of that time.

Es alentador observar que, a pesar de todos los obstáculos y de la despiadada oposición, las fuerzas islámicas van cobrando fuerza día tras día. En definitiva, el renacimiento del Islam parece inevitable.

It is heartening to note that despite all hurdles and ruthless opposition, Islamic forces are gathering strength day by day. On balance, the revival of Islam seems but inevitable.

En el mundo de hoy, está destinado a desempeñar un papel tan glorioso como el que desempeñó en los primeros días de su historia. Promete paz y tranquilidad a un mundo de hoy que está por completo absorto en los placeres y las ganancias materiales, y que, como consecuencia de ello, está azotado por conflictos y trastornos. El Islam establece un equilibrio entre la materia y el espíritu, y por eso es la única esperanza de la humanidad para salir del presente caos. Así pues, el mundo está obligado, tarde o temprano, a darse cuenta de la importancia del Islam y a adoptar sus principios, aunque no lo abrace formalmente como su religión.

In the world today, it is destined to playas glorious a role as it played in the first days of its history. It promises peace and tranquility to the world of today which is wholly taken up with material pleasures and gains, and is as a result thereof stricken with conflicts and disruptions. Islam strikes a balance between matter and spirit, and is thus the only hope for humanity to get out of the present mess. As such the world is bound sooner or later to realize the importance of Islam and adopt its principles even if it does not formally embrace it as its religion.

En cuanto a nosotros, los trabajadores del Islam, admitimos que somos plenamente conscientes de que el camino que tenemos por delante no es un lecho de rosas. Los musulmanes tendremos que ofrecer sacrificios, grandes y numerosos, para convencer al mundo de la bondad intrínseca y de la verdad del Islam. Pero recordemos siempre que el único camino hacia ese fin es el de la autoinmolación:

As to ourselves-the workers of Islam-we admit that we are fully alive to the fact that the path before us is not a bed of roses. We Muslims will have to offer sacrifices-great and many sacrifices, in order to convince the world of the intrinsic goodness and truth of Islam. But let us ever bear in mind that the only way towards that end is but that of self-immolation:

{Ciertamente Dios auxiliará a quienes le auxilian a Él (en Su causa), pues verdaderamente Dios es fuerte, Poderoso, capaz de hacer cumplir Su voluntad} (xxii: 40).

"God will certainly aid those who aid His (cause): for verily God is full of strength, Exalted in might, (Able to enforce His will) (xxii: 40).
