चिंतन (फ़िक्र) बुद्धि और समझ को कहते हैं। इसे "फ़िक्र" इसलिए कहा जाता है, हालाँकि इसका अर्थ सोचना है, यानी सोचने की प्रक्रिया और चीज़ों और मामलों पर निर्णय देना। इसका अर्थ सोचने का परिणाम भी है, यानी इंसान अपनी बुद्धि या सोचने की प्रक्रिया के द्वारा जिस निर्णय तक पहुँचता है। जब हम "पश्चिमी चिंतन" कहते हैं, तो उससे हमारा मतलब उपरोक्त सभी बातों से होता है। इसका अर्थ है वह सोचने का तरीक़ा जो पश्चिम ने अपनाया है, चीज़ों और मामलों को परखने का उसका ढंग, यानी उसकी कार्यप्रणाली और उसके मापदंड। इसमें उसकी बुद्धि के फल और उसकी सोच की उपज भी शामिल है, जो ज्ञान, विचारों और अवधारणाओं के रूप में सामने आती है और विचारधारा, सभ्यता और संस्कृति के रूप में प्रकट होती है।

Thought is the intellect and comprehension. It is called thought though it means thinking i.e. the thinking process and passing judgment upon things and matters. It is also means the result of thinking i.e. what a man arrives at of judgment, through his intellect or thinking process. What we mean by saying ‘Western thought’ is all of the above. It means the thinking process adopted by the West, its method of judging things and matters i.e. its methodology and its criteria. It also includes the fruits of its intellect and the product of its thinking, with respect to knowledge, thoughts and concepts, manifested as ideology, civilization and culture.
