পশ্চিম বহু বছর ধরে এই যুক্তি দিয়ে এসেছে যে বিশ্বজুড়ে মুসলিমরা ইসলামের বদলে গণতন্ত্র ও স্বাধীনতা চায়। তারা বলত, পাকিস্তান ও আফগানিস্তানের মতো দেশে শুধু সংখ্যালঘু মানুষই ইসলাম চায়, আর বিশ্বের অধিকাংশ মানুষ পশ্চিমের প্রতি আকৃষ্ট এবং পুঁজিবাদ অনুযায়ী জীবনযাপন করতে চায়। কিন্তু আজ আধুনিকতাবাদী মুসলিমরাই যুক্তি দিচ্ছেন যে মুসলিম বিশ্ব ইসলাম চায় না এবং তার জন্য প্রস্তুতও নয়।

For years the West argued that Muslims across the world want democracy and freedom rather than Islam. They argued that only a minority of people in Pakistan and Afghanistan want Islam, whilst the majority of the world was smitten by the West and wants to live by Capitalism. However, today it is modernist Muslims who argue the Muslim world does not want Islam and are not ready for it.

অন্যদিকে পশ্চিম এই বিশ্বাসে দৃঢ় যে মুসলিম বিশ্ব ইসলাম চায়, আর তাই এমন একটি হুমকির উত্থান থেকে নিজেকে রক্ষা করার প্রক্রিয়া সে শুরু করেছে।
