"أعتقد أن العلمانية التعددية، على المدى الطويل، سمٌّ أشدّ فتكًا من الاضطهاد الصريح" -- فرانسيس شيفر قام وزير الخارجية البريطاني السابق جاك سترو مرة أخرى بإثارة الجدل عندما اقترح أن على المسلمات خلع النقاب. وسبق لسترو أن أثار ضجة كبيرة بين المسلمين وغير المسلمين على حد سواء، حين أذن بشن الحرب على العراق، ونفى وجود أي صلة بين السياسة الخارجية البريطانية والإرهاب الداخلي. لكن سترو ليس الوزير الوحيد الذي يقلل من الطابع الإسلامي للمجتمع المسلم في بريطانيا. فروث كيلي، وزيرة المجتمعات، دعت إلى "نقاش جديد وصريح" حول مزايا التعددية الثقافية.

Previously, Straw caused immense hue and cry amongst Muslims and non-Muslims alike, when he authorised the war against Iraq, and denied any link between Britain's foreign policy and home grown terror. But Straw is not the only minister who is denigrating the Islamic character of the Muslim community in Britain. Ruth Kelly, the Communities Secretary, called for a "new and honest debate" ion the merits of multiculturalism.
