He accepted Islam in the sixth year of prophecy when he was twenty-seven years old, says adh-Dhahabi.

An-Nawawi berkata: Umar lahir tiga belas tahun setelah peristiwa Gajah. Beliau termasuk kalangan bangsawan Quraisy dan memiliki peran sebagai utusan pada masa Jahiliyyah. Setiap kali terjadi peperangan di antara mereka atau antara mereka dengan kabilah lain, Quraisy akan mengutus beliau sebagai utusan, yakni pembawa pesan. Dan ketika seseorang menyeru mereka untuk diadili, yang sering kali terkait dengan masalah kedudukan atau garis keturunan, maka mereka mengutus beliau sebagai jawaban atas seruan tersebut.

An-Nawawi says: cUmar was born thirteen years after the Elephant, he was one of the nobility of Quraysh, and he had the role of ambassador in the Jahiliyyah; Quraysh, whenever war broke out among them or between them and others, would send him as an ambassador, i.e. a messenger, and when someone called them to judgement — often over a matter of standing or lineage - then they sent him as a response to that.

Beliau memeluk Islam sangat awal, setelah empat puluh laki-laki lain dan sebelas perempuan. Dia berkata: Ia termasuk golongan pertama yang berlomba-lomba dalam kebaikan, salah seorang dari sepuluh orang yang disaksikan akan masuk surga, salah seorang khulafaur rasyidin, salah seorang kerabat dekat Nabi ﷺ, salah seorang tokoh besar ilmu di kalangan para Sahabat, dan salah seorang dari mereka yang zuhud.

He said: He was one of the outstripping first ones, one of the ten for whom it was witnessed that they were for the Garden, one of the khulafa’ who took the right way, one of the in-laws of the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, one of the great men of knowledge of the Companions and one of their abstinent people.

Dan diriwayatkan darinya lima ratus tiga puluh sembilan hadits dari Nabi ﷺ.

There are related from him five hundred and thirty-nine hadith from the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace.

Utsman bin Affan meriwayatkan darinya, Ali (bin Abi Thalib), Thalhah (bin Ubaidillah), Sa'ad (bin Abi Waqqash), Abdurrahman bin Auf, Ibnu Mas'ud, Abu Dzar, Amr bin Abasah dan putranya Abdullah, Ibnu Abbas, Ibnu az-Zubair, Anas, Abu Hurairah, Amr bin al-Ash, Abu Musa al-Asy'ari, al-Bara' bin Azib, Abu Sa'id al-Khudri, dan sejumlah besar para Sahabat serta selain mereka, semoga Allah meridhai mereka semua.
