একজন পাপীর হৃদয় সর্বদা উদ্বেগ ও আতঙ্কে থাকে, কারণ আল্লাহর আনুগত্য আল্লাহর মহান দুর্গের মতো, সুতরাং যে এতে প্রবেশ করে সে দুনিয়া ও আখিরাতের শাস্তি থেকে নিরাপদ থাকে; কিন্তু যে এ থেকে বেরিয়ে যায় সে ভয় ও দুশ্চিন্তার সকল দিক দিয়ে পরিবেষ্টিত হয়ে পড়ে। একজন পাপীর হৃদয় সর্বদা অস্থির থাকে; সে যেকোনো শব্দ শুনলেই ভীত হয়ে পড়ে এবং বিশ্বাস করে যে যেকোনো বিপদ তার জন্যই নির্ধারিত। কিন্তু যে আল্লাহকে ভয় করে, সে এসব দুশ্চিন্তা থেকে মুক্ত থাকে। পাপ হৃদয়ে একাকীত্বের অনুভূতি জন্ম দেয়। একজন পাপী নিজেকে তার রব থেকে এবং অন্য মানুষ থেকে বিচ্ছিন্ন মনে করে। সে যত বেশি পাপ করে, তার বিচ্ছিন্নতা ততই বাড়ে, আর এভাবে সে জীবনের তিক্ততা ভোগ করে, উদ্বিগ্ন ও একাকী এক মানুষের মতো। একজন পাপী পাপ করার সময় আনন্দ অনুভব করে, কিন্তু তা কেবল মুহূর্তের আনন্দ, কারণ এরপর তার হৃদয় উদ্বেগে ভরে যায়। এ বিষয়ের রহস্য হলো, আল্লাহর আনুগত্য ধার্মিক ব্যক্তিকে আল্লাহর আরও নিকটে নিয়ে যায়, এবং যাদের সে ভালোবাসে তারা দূরে থাকলেও তাদের আরও কাছে নিয়ে আসে। আল্লাহর অবাধ্যতা আল্লাহ থেকে দূরত্বের অনুভূতি টেনে আনে, আর এর সবচেয়ে কঠিন রূপ হলো শিরক, অর্থাৎ আল্লাহর সাথে শরিক স্থাপন করা।

A sinner's heart is always in state of anxiety and terror, because obedience to Allah ~ represents the great fortress of Allah, so whoever enters it is safe from the Punishment of this world and the Hereafter; but whoever leaves it would be surrounded by all aspects of fear and worry. A sinner's heart is always restless; he/she feels nervous about any noise he/she hears, and believes that any misfortune is intended for him/her. But one who fears Allah would be spared all these worries. Sins implant a sense of isolation in the heart. A sinner feels secluded from his/her Lord and from other people. As he/she commits more sins, his/her isolation increases, and so he/she would endure the bitterness of life, as a worried lonely person. A sinner feels delighted when committing a sin, but this is just a pleasure of the moment, as his/her heart is filled with anxiety afterwards. The secret in this matter is that obedience to Allah ~ brings the devout person closer to Him ~. and closer to other people that he/she loves, even if they are far away from him/her. Disobedience to Allah ~ attracts the feeling of remoteness from Allah ~. and the most severe form is that of polytheism, associating partners with Allah.
