अल-हसन अल-बसरी, अल्लाह उन पर रहम करे, ने कहा: "अल्लाह ~ पापियों को अपमानित करता है क्योंकि उन्होंने उसकी अवज्ञा की। यदि वह ~ उनका सम्मान करता, तो वह ~ उन्हें पाप करने से बचा लेता; और जिन्हें अल्लाह ~ अपमानित करता है, उनका सम्मान करने वाला कोई नहीं होगा; क्योंकि उसने ~ कहा: (जिसे अल्लाह अपमानित करे, उसे कोई सम्मान नहीं दे सकता) 3 इंसान पाप करता ही रहता है, यहाँ तक कि वह उसे छोटा समझने लगता है, और जितना कोई पाप इंसान की नज़र में छोटा होता जाता है, उतना ही वह अल्लाह की नज़र में गंभीर और बड़ा होता जाता है। इब्न मसऊद ~ ने कहा: "मोमिन अपने पापों को ऐसे देखता है जैसे वे किसी पहाड़ की जड़ हों, जिसके बारे में वह डरता है कि कहीं वह उस पर न गिर पड़े; जबकि पापी अपने पापों को उन मक्खियों की तरह समझता है जो उसकी नाक पर बैठ जाती हैं, और वह उन्हें हाथ से हटा देता है और वे उड़ जाती हैं।"4

Al-Hasan Al-Basri, may Allah have mercy upon him, said: "Allah ~ disgraces them (sinners) as they disobeyed Him. If He ~ had honoured them, He ~ would have safeguarded them from committing sins; and those Allah ~ humiliates will have no one to honour them; for He ~ said: (Whomsoever Allah disgraces, none can honour him) 3 A person also continues to commit a sin until he attaches little importance to it, and the more a sin becomes insignificant to a person, the more it becomes serious and great in the Sight of Allah. Ibn Mas'ud ~ said: "A believer sees his sins as if they were the base of a mountain, which he fears might fall on him; whereas the sinner considers his sins like some flies landing on his nose, which he repels so they fly away."4
