এই মাযহাবটি সিরীয় আলেম ‘আবদুর রহমান ইবনুল আওযা‘ঈ-এর নামে নামকরণ করা হয়েছে, যিনি ৭০৮ সালে বা‘লাবাক-এ জন্মগ্রহণ করেন।

This Madh-hab is named after the Syrian scholar ‘AbdurRahman ibn al-Awzaa’ee who was born in Ba’labek in the year 708

CE। তিনি অষ্টম শতাব্দীর হাদীসশাস্ত্রের অন্যতম প্রধান আলিম হিসেবে পরিচিত হন। তিনি কুরআন ও সুন্নাহ থেকে স্পষ্ট দলীল বিদ্যমান থাকা অবস্থায় কিয়াস এবং অন্যান্য যুক্তিনির্ভর পদ্ধতির অতিরিক্ত ব্যবহারের বিরোধী ছিলেন। ইমাম আওযাঈ তাঁর জীবনের অধিকাংশ সময় বৈরুতে অতিবাহিত করেন এবং অবশেষে ৭৭৪ CE সালে সেখানেই ইন্তেকাল করেন। তবে তাঁর মাযহাব সিরিয়া, জর্দান, ফিলিস্তিন ও লেবানন, পাশাপাশি স্পেনেও ব্যাপকভাবে প্রসার লাভ করে।

He became known as one of the major scholars of Hadeeth of the eighth century CE and was opposed to the excessive use of Qiyaas and other forms of reasoning in cases where clear texts from the Qur’aan and or Sunnah were available. Imaam Awzaa’ee spent most of his life in Beirut, eventually dying there in the year 774 CE, but his Madh-hab became widespread in Syria, Jordan, Palestine and Lebanon as well as in Spain.
