ムハンマドの呼びかけは、明確に区別される二つの段階に分けることができる。

The Muhammadan Call could be divided into two phases distinctively demarcated:

1. メッカ期：約13年間。

1. The Makkan phase: nearly thirteen years.

2. マディーナ期:まるまる十年間。

2. The Madinese phase: fully ten years.

それぞれの時期には、その時期を特徴づけた状況を正確に検討すれば容易に見分けられる、際立った特徴がありました。

Each of the two phases included distinctive features easily discernible through accurate scrutiny into the circumstances that characterized each of them.

メッカ期は三つの段階に分けることができます。

The Makkan phase can be divided into three stages:

1. 秘密の宣教の段階：三年間。

1. The stage of the secret Call: three years.

2. 布教の段階（マッカにおける預言者職の第四年の初めから第十年の終わり近くまで）

2. The stage of the proclamation of the Call in Makkah: from the beginning of the fourth year of Prophethood to almost the end of the tenth year.

3. イスラームへの招きとメッカ外への布教の段階：預言者としての第十年の終わりから、ムハンマド（彼の上に平安あれ）がマディーナへ移住するまで続いた。

3. The stage of the call to Islam and propagating it beyond Makkah: it lasted from the end of tenth year of the Prophethood until Muhammad’s (Peace be upon him) emigration to Madinah.

マディーナ期については、その適切な箇所で後ほど取り上げることにします。

The Madinese phase will be considered later in its due course.
