[Bilāl al-Khawwāṣ :] J'étais dans le désert des Israélites quand soudain, j'ai trouvé un homme marchant à mes côtés. J'ai été surpris, mais j'ai ensuite réalisé qu'il s'agissait d'al-Khaḍir. 16.1

[Bilāl al-Khawwāṣ:] I was in the desert of the Israelites when suddenly I found a man walking beside me. I was surprised, but then I was given to realize that he was al- Khaḍir. 16.1

« Je vous le demande par Dieu, » dis-je. « Qui êtes-vous ? » « Votre frère al-Khaḍir. » « Je veux vous demander quelque chose. » « Allez-y. » « Que pensez-vous d'al-Shāfiʿī ? » « Il est l'un des Piliers. »105

“I ask you by God,” I said. “Who are you?” “Your brother al-Khaḍir.” “I want to ask you something.” “Go ahead.” “What do you think of al-Shāfiʿī?” “He’s one of the Pegs.”105

« Qu'en est-il d'Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal ? » « Un véridique. »106

“What about Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal?” “A truth-teller.”106

« Qu'en est-il de Bishr ibn al-Ḥārith ? » « Il est le dernier de son espèce. » « Alors comment se fait-il que je puisse te voir ? » « Parce que tu as été bon envers ta mère. » [Un homme de Baghdad :] Je voyageais sur un navire et nous avons accosté sur une île. Il y avait là un vieil homme aux cheveux blancs assis. Je l'ai salué et il m'a demandé d'où je venais. 16.2

“What about Bishr ibn al-Ḥārith?” “He’s the last of his kind.” “So how is it that I’m able to see you?” “Because you were kind to your mother.” [A man of Baghdad:] I was traveling on a ship and we landed on an island. There was an elderly white-haired man sitting there. I greeted him and he asked me where I was from. 16.2

« De Baghdad », ai-je dit.

“From Baghdad,” I said.

« Quand tu arriveras là-bas, » dit-il, « transmets mes salutations à Ibn Ḥanbal, et dis-lui : « Patiente ! La promesse de Dieu est vérité ; ne laisse pas ceux qui ne veulent pas être convaincus te décourager. » »107

“When you get there,” he said, “give Ibn Ḥanbal my regards, and tell him, «Have patience! God’s promise is true; let not those who will not be convinced make you discouraged.»”107

Puis il disparut, et nous réalisons qu'il était al-Khaḍir.

Then he disappeared, and we realized that he was al-Khaḍir.
