Le consensus (Ijma’) est le nom verbal du mot arabe Ajmaa, qui a deux significations : 1) déterminer, 2) s'accorder sur quelque chose.

Ijma‟ is the verbal noun of the Arabic word Ajmaa, which has two meanings: 1) to determine, 2) to agree upon something.

Il existe de nombreux types de consensus (Ijma’) discutés dans les livres de fondements de la jurisprudence (Usul al-Fiqh). Certains d'entre eux sont : le consensus (Ijma’) de la communauté (Ummah), le consensus (Ijma’) des interprètes qualifiés (Mujtahideen), le consensus (Ijma’) de la famille (Ahl al-Bayt), le consensus (Ijma’) de Médine et le consensus (Ijma’) des Compagnons. Le consensus (Ijma’) des Compagnons est le seul qui soit définitif et incontesté.

There are many types of Ijma‟ discussed in the books of Usul al-Fiqh. Some of these are; Ijma‟ al Ummah, Ijma‟ al Mujtahideen, Ijma‟ ahlel Bayt, Ijma al Madinah and Ijma‟ as-Sahabah. Ijma‟ as-Sahabah is the only one that is definitive and agreed upon.

Si les compagnons (Sahabah) (qu'Allah soit satisfait d'eux) après la mort du Prophète ﷺ s'accordaient unanimement sur une solution à un problème sans aucune dissension entre eux, en l'absence d'une prescription du Coran et de la sunna, alors cet accord est considéré comme une preuve (Daleel). Cet accord doit s'être fondé sur un enseignement de Muhammad ﷺ dont ils étaient tous informés, mais qui ne nous est pas parvenu directement sous la forme d'un hadith. Par conséquent, l'Ijma’ des Sahabah est un indicateur de la sunna elle-même.

If the Sahabah (ra) after the death of the Prophet (saw) were to agree unanimously upon a solution to a problem without any dissent amongst each other, in the absence of a ruling from the Qur‟an and Sunnah, then this agreement is considered to be a Daleel. This agreement must have been based upon some teaching of Mohammed (saw) of which they all knew, but which did not reach us directly in the form of Hadith. Therefore, Ijma‟ as-Sahabah is an indication of Sunnah itself.
