Quando a ganância leva as pessoas a verem a riqueza alheia como algo violável, ver as vidas dos outros dessa mesma forma é simplesmente o passo seguinte. Assim, o Profeta ﷺ disse: "Acautelai-vos da opressão, pois a opressão resultará em trevas no Dia do Juízo. E acautelai-vos da ganância, pois foi a ganância que destruiu os que vieram antes de vós; levou-os a derramar o sangue uns dos outros e a violar a sacralidade uns dos outros." 324 O último século testemunhou atrocidades na guerra moderna, ciclos de genocídio, policiamento abusivo e violência sem sentido em larga escala, incomparáveis em qualquer outro período da história humana e todos rastreáveis a interesses egoístas. Só Allah sabe se isto é essa profecia a manifestar-se, ou apenas um prelúdio de eras de violência ainda pior e sem sentido, que o Profeta ﷺ também anunciou.

When greed causes people to see other people’s wealth as violable, seeing their lives that way is simply the next step. Thus, the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said, “Beware of oppression, for oppression will result in darknesses on the Day of Judgment. And beware of greed, for greed is what destroyed those before you; it drove them to spill each other’s blood and violate each other’s sanctity.” 324 The past century has seen atrocities in modern warfare, cycles of genocide, abusive policing, and senseless violence at large, that are incomparable anywhere in human history and all traceable to selfish interests. Only Allah knows whether this is that prophecy manifesting, or simply a precursor to eras of even worse senseless violence which the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم also foretold.
