Taalkundig gezien betekent Daleel een bewijs (Daleel), aanwijzing of bewijsstuk. Als term betekent Daleel de bron of het bewijs voor een gedachte, concept of een uitspraak. Elke wet of uitspraak moet een bewijs (Daleel) hebben, wat afkomstig kan zijn uit de Qur'an, de profetische traditie (Sunnah), of een bron waar de Qur'an en de profetische traditie (Sunnah) ons opdracht toe hebben gegeven te volgen. Deze bronnen zullen later in het boek worden besproken. Elke uitspraak uit de tekst van ofwel de Qur'an of de profetische traditie (Sunnah) wordt beschouwd als een bewijs (Daleel). Bijvoorbeeld, de Qur'an stelt:

Linguistically, Daleel means a proof, indication, or evidence. As a term, Daleel means the source or evidence for a thought, concept, or a ruling. Any law or ruling must have a Daleel, which can be from Qur‟an, Sunnah, or a source, which Qur‟an and Sunnah directed us to adopt. These sources will be discussed later in the book. Any ruling from the text of either the Qur‟an or Sunnah is considered a Daleel. For example, the Qur‟an states:

“Laat er een groep mensen onder jullie ontstaan die oproept tot al het goede (Islam) en het goede gebiedt en het kwade verbiedt.” (TMQ Al-Imran: 104)

“Let there arise out of you a group of people inviting to all that is good (Islam) and enjoining what is right and forbidding what is wrong.” (TMQ Al-Imran: 104)

Dit vers (Ayah) wordt beschouwd als een bewijs (Daleel) voor de plicht om een Hizb (partij of groep) op te richten die oproept tot de Islam en het goede gebiedt en het kwaad (Munkar) verbiedt.

This Ayah is considered a Daleel for the obligation of establishing a Hizb (party or group) calling for Islam and enjoining what is M‟aruf (good) and forbidding what is Munkar (bad).

Een voorbeeld van een bewijs (Daleel) uit de profetische traditie (Sunnah) is het verbod op het oproepen tot nationalisme. De Profeet ﷺ zei over alle vormen van „Asabiyah (nationalisme, racisme, tribalisme):

“Laat het liggen, het is verrot.” (Bukhari & Muslim)

“Leave it, it is rotten.” (Bukhari & Muslim)
