O Alcorão foi revelado em partes ao Profeta Muhammad ﷺ desde o início da sua profecia até pouco antes da sua morte. Assim, o Alcorão desceu de forma contínua ao longo de um período de vinte e três anos.

The Qur’aan was revealed in sections to Prophet Muhammad (r) from the beginning of his prophethood until shortly before his death. Thus, the Qur’aan came down continuously over a period of twenty-three years.

As seções do Alcorão foram geralmente reveladas para resolver os problemas que existiam entre as comunidades muçulmanas tanto em Makkah quanto em Madeenah. Como os problemas e as necessidades de Makkah eram diferentes dos de Madeenah, as revelações de Makkah e as de Madeenah possuem características especiais próprias.

The various sections of the Qur’aan were generally revealed to solve the problems which existed among the Muslim communities in both Makkah and Madeenah. Since the prob-lems and needs of Makkah were different from those of Madeenah, the revelations of Makkah and Madeenah have special characteristics of their own.

É muito importante que as diferenças entre as revelações de Makkah e de Madeenah sejam claramente compreendidas, se o próprio Qur'aan deve ser claramente compreendido. Por causa da grande importância do Qur'aan para o Islam, os eruditos islâmicos, desde a época dos sahaabah, dedicaram muito tempo e esforço a esta área de estudo.

It is very important that the differences between the revelations of Makkah and Madeenah be clearly understood if the Qur’aan itself is to be clearly understood. Because of the great importance of the Qur’aan to Islaam, Islaamic scholars from the time of the sahaabah have devoted much time and effort in this area of study
