Jika "Islam Amerika" hanya berarti makan burger keju setelah salat Jumat alih-alih nasi biryani, maka tidak ada yang mempermasalahkan hal itu. "Islam Amerika" yang dipermasalahkan orang adalah ketika agama (deen) dikompromikan semata-mata demi menyesuaikan diri dengan nilai-nilai dan budaya Amerika.

If “American Islam” just means eating cheeseburgers after Friday prayers instead of biryani, then no one has any issue with that. The “American Islam” that people have a problem with is when deen is compromised for no other reason than to accommodate American sensibilities and culture.

Contoh: Di Amerika, boleh bagi wanita Muslimah menikah dengan pria non-Muslim karena aspek x, y, z dari budaya tersebut. Di Amerika, boleh bagi wanita dan pria shalat berdampingan karena aspek x, y, z dari budaya tersebut. Di Amerika, boleh bagi non-mahram berkencan dan menggunakan aplikasi kencan (hook-up) karena aspek x, y, z dari budaya tersebut. Di Amerika, boleh merokok ganja secara rekreasi karena aspek x, y, z dari budaya tersebut. Di Amerika, boleh bagi Muslim menghadiri dan ikut serta dalam ritual keagamaan orang Kristen, Yahudi, dan lainnya karena aspek x, y, z dari budaya tersebut. Di Amerika, boleh bagi anak-anak Muslim pergi ke prom karena aspek x, y, z dari budaya tersebut. Di Amerika, boleh mengonsumsi riba (yang sebenarnya secara teknis bukan riba!) karena aspek x, y, z dari budaya tersebut. Di Amerika, boleh bagi wanita Muslimah melakukan aborsi jika mereka tidak stabil secara finansial karena aspek x, y, z dari budaya tersebut. Di Amerika, boleh mendukung LGBT apa pun karena aspek x, y, z dari budaya tersebut. Di Amerika, boleh mengabaikan norma pemisahan gender di masjid atau pertemuan keagamaan lainnya karena aspek x, y, z dari budaya tersebut. Dan seterusnya. Jika ini yang disebut "Islam Amerika," maka saya tidak termasuk di dalamnya. Namun saya akan senang duduk bersama Anda untuk makan cheeseburger. Atau biryani.

In America, it is ok for non-mahrams to go on dates and use hook-up apps because of x, y, z aspects of the culture. In America, it is ok to smoke weed recreationally because of x, y, z aspects of the culture. In America, it is ok for Muslims to attend and participate in the religious rituals of Christians, Jews, etc., because of x, y, z aspects of the culture. In America, it is ok for Muslim kids to go to prom because of x, y, z aspects of the culture. In America, it is ok to consume riba (which is technically not riba anyway!) because of x, y, z aspects of the culture. In America, it is ok for Muslim women to get abortions if they are not financially stable because of x, y, z aspects of the culture. In America, it is ok to support LGBT whatever because of x, y, z aspects of the culture. In America, it is ok to ignore norms of gender separation in the mosque or other religious gatherings because of x, y, z aspects of the culture. And on and on. If this is “American Islam,” count me out. But I will be happy to sit down with you for a cheeseburger. Or biryani.
