दंड व्यवस्था के उद्देश्य तीन प्रकार के हैं:

The objectives of the punishment system are three fold :

1) अपराध के दोषियों को दंड देना, जिससे वह कफ़्फ़ारा (प्रायश्चित/शुद्धि) का काम करे और उन्हें सुधारे।

1) To punish those guilty of crime, thereby acting as kaffara (purification) and reforming them.

2) समाज को अपराध करने से रोकने के लिए एक निवारक (deterrent) के रूप में कार्य करना।

2) To act as a deterrent for society from committing crime.

3) अपराध के शिकार लोगों के लिए प्रतिशोध का साधन बनना।

3) To be a means of retribution for those who are victims of crime.

सज़ा के विभिन्न स्तर होते हैं, जो अपराध की गंभीरता, अपराध की प्रकृति और उसके आसपास की अन्य परिस्थितियों के अनुरूप होते हैं। ये सभी उन उद्देश्यों को प्राप्त करने का काम करते हैं जिनका ऊपर विस्तार से उल्लेख किया गया है।

There are various degrees of punishment that accord with the severity of the crime, the nature of the crime, and other factors which surround it. These all have the effect of achieving the objectives detailed above.
