Parte da provisão para a preservação da dignidade e da honra dos homens e das mulheres no Islã está na regulamentação da maneira como eles se veem uns aos outros. É proibido ao homem muçulmano olhar para qualquer mulher com intenções lascivas, exceto para a sua esposa. O mesmo vale para a mulher muçulmana em relação aos outros homens.

Part of the provision of maintaining the dignity and honour of men and women in Islam is in the regulation of the way they are regarded by each other. It is forbidden for the Muslim man to look at any woman with lustful intentions, except for his wife. The same is true for a Muslim woman with regard to other men.

“Dize aos crentes que baixem os seus olhares e guardem as suas partes íntimas; isso é mais puro para eles. Allah está bem ciente do que eles fazem. E dize às crentes que baixem os seus olhares e guardem as suas partes íntimas.” [] Jarir ibn ‘Abdullah relatou: “Perguntei ao Mensageiro de Allah ﷺ sobre o olhar repentino (lançado) ao rosto (de uma pessoa não-mahram). Ele ordenou-me que desviasse os meus olhos.” Muslim.
