O Hijab Tem Algum Efeito Sobre o Assédio Sexual?

Este é um argumento comum contra a utilidade da vestimenta modesta e do hijab, nomeadamente que "mulheres vestidas com modéstia, mesmo mulheres de hijab completo, ainda são vítimas de assédio verbal na rua e de agressão sexual. Logo, é claro que a vestimenta modesta e o hijab não têm qualquer impacto na proteção das mulheres contra o assédio sexual". Mas este é um argumento falho, porque ninguém afirma que vestir-se com modéstia vai eliminar por completo a possibilidade de receber atenção indesejada. A afirmação é simplesmente que, mantendo tudo o resto igual, a vestimenta modesta, por exemplo o hijab, reduz significativamente a probabilidade de tal assédio. Assim, sim, embora as mulheres de hijab sejam, infelizmente, vítimas frequentes de assédio verbal nas ruas movimentadas do Cairo, por exemplo, o facto inegável permanece: o assédio seria muito, muito pior se estas mesmas mulheres se vestissem com leggings de yoga, tops e outros estilos ocidentais comuns.
This is a common argument I hear against the utility of modest dress and the hijab, namely that “modestly dressed women, even women in full hijab, are still victims of catcalling and sexual assault. So clearly modest dress and hijab have no impact in protecting women from sexual harassment.” But this is a flawed argument because no one claims that dressing modestly will completely foreclose on the possibility of receiving negative attention. The claim is simply that, all else being equal, modest dress, e.g., hijab, significantly reduces the likelihood of such harassment. So, yes, while women in hijab are, unfortunately, frequent victims of catcalling in Cairo’s busy streets, for example, the undeniable fact remains that the harassment would be much, much worse if these same women were dressed in yoga pants, tank tops, and other common Western styles.
