Modernity and the Quran
Um dos principais impulsionadores do progressismo moral é a crença no progresso científico. Se o nosso conhecimento da ciência e da tecnologia avançou tanto na era moderna, então é lógico concluir que, como civilização, também avançamos moralmente, e que o nosso conhecimento moral é superior ao dos povos do passado. Este raciocínio não é novo. É algo em que todas as grandes civilizações acreditaram sobre si mesmas, e é uma mentalidade diretamente contestada no Alcorão, quando Allah nos manda contemplar os vestígios e as ruínas de civilizações passadas que, apesar das suas grandes conquistas técnicas, foram destruídas por causa da sua arrogância e da sua rebelião contra Deus e os Seus mensageiros. Mais ainda, o Alcorão vai além disto: não só estais enganados por serdes arrogantes ao pensar que a vossa força e as vossas conquistas técnicas se traduzem em retidão e superioridade moral, como também estais enganados por pensar que sois a civilização mais forte e mais avançada tecnicamente da história. Houve outras, maiores em força, em número e em impacto sobre a terra.
One of the main drivers of moral progressivism is the belief in scientific progress. If our knowledge of science and technology has advanced so much in the modern era, then it stands to reason that we as a civilization have also advanced morally, that our moral knowledge also is superior to that of peoples in the past. This line of reasoning is not new. It is something all major civilizations have believed of themselves, and it is a mindset that is directly opposed in the Quran when Allah tells us to look at the remnants and ruins of past civilizations who, despite their great technical achievements, were destroyed for their arrogance and rebellion against God and His messengers. In fact, the Quran goes further than this by saying, not only are you wrong for being arrogant in thinking that your strength and technical achievement translates to rectitude and moral superiority, but you are also wrong for thinking that you are the strongest and most technically advanced civilization of history. There were others greater in strength, numbers, and impact on the land.

Podemos nos perguntar se houve civilizações passadas tecnicamente mais avançadas que a nossa hoje. Somente Allah sabe. Não devemos presumir automaticamente que não houve. Mais importante ainda, não devemos julgar os valores de um povo pelo quão "moderno" ele é, mas pelo quão completamente ele está de acordo com o que o último Mensageiro ﷺ trouxe.
We might wonder whether there were past civilizations that were more technically advanced than ours today. Only Allah knows. We shouldn’t automatically assume that there weren’t. More importantly, we should not judge a people’s values by how “modern” they are but by how completely they accord with what the last Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم has brought.
