قرأتُ كتاب "موجز تاريخ الزمن" لستيفن هوكينغ في المرحلة المتوسطة، وأعجبني كثيراً. ثم أتيحت لي فرصة الاستماع إليه مباشرةً حين كنت في المرحلة الثانوية. كان من المبسّطين للعلم الذين أيقظوا اهتمامي بدراسة الفيزياء، وهو ما قادني في النهاية إلى نيل شهادتي في هذا التخصص من جامعة هارفارد.

I read Stephen Hawking’s A Brief History of Time in middle school and thought it was great. I also got a chance to see him speak in person when I was in high school. He was one of the populizers of science who sparked my interest in studying physics that eventually led to receiving my degree in the subject from Harvard.

ما كان واضحًا دائمًا بشأن هوكينغ أنه كان رجلًا ذا إيمان عظيم. لكن ليس إيمانًا بالله، فقد كان ملحدًا متشددًا. لقد وضع إيمانه في قدرة العقل البشري على اكتشاف "النظرية الموحدة الكبرى لكل شيء". فهل توجد مثل هذه النظرية؟ كان هوكينغ يعتقد بقوة أنها موجودة، وكرّس حياته، كما فعل أينشتاين وكثير من الفيزيائيين الآخرين، لمحاولة اكتشافها.

What was always clear about Hawking was that he was a man of great faith. Not faith in God, though. He was a staunch atheist. He put his faith in the human mind’s ability to discover the “Grand Unified Theory of Everything.” Does such a theory exist? Hawking strongly believed so, and like Einstein and many other physicists, he dedicated his life to attempting to discover it.

كيف نعرف أن مثل هذه النظرية موجودة؟ وكيف نعرف أنه يمكن اكتشافها أصلاً؟ كانت هذه الأسئلة تُقلقني بوصفي طالباً للفيزياء، ولم تكن لدى أساتذتي إجابات مقنعة. وغاية ما كانوا يستطيعون قوله أن الكون بالغ التعقيد، ويُظهر نظاماً عجيباً وإحكاماً بديعاً، فلا بد أن وراءه شيئاً ما، ولا بد من حقيقة أعمق! لا بد من سبب يفسّر وجود هذا النظام، وهذا "التصميم العظيم"! والسبب، كما ذهب هوكينغ 1 2 The Modernist Menace to Islam، هو أن هناك نظرية شاملة، ربما معادلة واحدة تفسّر كل شيء، تُسمّى عند بعض الفيزيائيين "معادلة الله"، هي التي تقوم عليها كل الأشياء.

How do we know such a theory exists? And how do we know it can be discovered at all? These were questions that troubled me as a student of physics. And none of my professors had compelling answers. The most that they could say is that the universe is so intricate and demonstrates such complexity and sublime order that there must be something that underlies it all. There must be a deeper truth! There must be a reason why this order, this “Grand Design” exists! And the reason, Hawking 1 2 The Modernist Menace to Islam surmised, is that an all-encompassing theory, perhaps even one all-explanatory equation, a “God equation” as some physicists call it, underpins it all.

يتضح الشرك في هذه العقلية بجلاء، ولا سيما عند من يرفض الله رفضًا صريحًا مثل هوكينغ، وذلك في سبيل هذا النوع من التأملات الميتافيزيقية حول العالم وتاريخه. فبدلًا من أن يُقرّ بأن نظام الكون، وقابليته للفهم من قِبل العقل أصلًا، إنما هما من آثار خالقٍ قادرٍ على كل شيء، خالقِ الكون والعقل البشري معًا، أعرض هوكينغ عن الواضح المكشوف، وأصرّ على وهمٍ من صنع خياله، وهو ما سماه تجديفًا "معادلة الله". يا لَلْحماقة! أن يتخيّل المرء أن عقله قادرٌ لا على إدراك أسرار الكون وعظمته فحسب، بل على تنظيمه كذلك في إطار نظري من صنعه هو! ما هذا إلا عبادةٌ للذات، وهو الشرك ذاته الذي نراه عند إبليس وفرعون.

The shirk explicit in this mentality is clear, especially for those like Hawking who militantly reject God in lieu of this kind of metaphysical speculation about the world and its history. Rather than recognize that the order of the universe and its comprehensibility to the mind in the first place are due to an all powerful Creator of both the universe and the human mind, Hawking obstinately turned away from the obvious to insist on a figment of his imagination, the blasphemously-named “God equation.” What folly it is to imagine that one’s mind is powerful enough to not only comprehend the secrets and grandeur of the universe but also to systematize it in a theoretical framework of one’s making! This is nothing but self worship, the kind of shirk seen from the likes of Iblis and Pharoah.

أجد أن الآيات الأولى من سورة الملك في القرآن الكريم ذات صلة وثيقة بهوكينغ وبموته، وبموت أمثاله ممن يعبدون أهواءهم، ويظنون أنهم عباقرة مستنيرون، وما يخدعون بذلك إلا أنفسهم.

I find the first several verses of Surat al-Mulk in the Quran very relevant to Hawking and his demise and the demise of those like him who worship their whims, thinking they are enlightened geniuses, but deluding none but themselves.
