حرية الفكر شيءٌ يفترض الناس جميعاً أنهم يمتلكونه بالأصل. لا يظن أحدٌ أن أفكاره ليست ملكاً له. والحقيقة أن الغالبية العظمى من أفكار الناس تُملى عليهم بشدة، بل تخضع للسيطرة الكاملة من قِبل قوى المجتمع الكبرى. ولا يشذّ عن ذلك أولئك "المفكرون الأحرار" اليوم، بصوتهم العالي وفخرهم، وبإزعاجهم أيضاً.

Freedom of thought is something all people assume they have by default. No one thinks his thoughts are not his own. In reality, the vast majority of people’s thoughts are heavily dictated and outright controlled by larger societal forces. Today’s loud and proud (and obnoxious) “free thinkers” are no exception.

ولكن إليك مثالٌ أوسع: ماذا لو قلتُ لك إن هناك تعارضاتٍ واضحةً بين الإسلام والقيم الأمريكية (والغربية)؟

But here is a broader example. What if I were to tell you that there are clear conflicts between Islam and American (and Western) values?

أنا لن أُفصِّل في هذا الادعاء، لأن ذلك ليس هو المقصود. المقصود أن مجرد الفكرة القائلة بوجود تعارض بين كون المرء مسلماً وكونه أمريكياً تُعدّ عند كثير من المسلمين الأمريكيين أقرب ما يكون إلى الكفر.

I am not going to elaborate on this claim because that’s not the point. The point is that even the thought that there is a conflict between being Muslim and being American is considered all but blasphemy to many American Muslims.

ٹھہریں ایک لمحے کے لیے۔ اوپر جو لکھا گیا ہے اسے پڑھ کر اگر آپ کو جھنجھلاہٹ، غصہ، حیرت محسوس ہو رہی ہے، یا آپ اس بیان کی غلطیوں کے بارے میں سوچ رہے ہیں، تو رک کر خود سے پوچھیں: یہ سادہ سا دعویٰ آپ کو اتنی بے چینی کیوں دے رہا ہے؟ اس بات میں ایسی کون سی بات ہے جو آپ کو اتنا پریشان کرے؟ یہ دعویٰ دراصل کفر یا کسی الہیاتی مسئلے سے متعلق بھی نہیں ہے۔ اور اگر آپ اسے مجرد طور پر دیکھیں، تو یہ کوئی ایسی عجیب یا قابلِ اعتراض بات نہیں، چاہے آخرکار یہ غلط ہی نکلے۔ اس کو سمجھنے کے لیے خود سے پوچھیں: کیا اسلام ویتنامی اقدار سے متصادم ہے؟ کیا اسلام چِلی کی ثقافتی اقدار سے متصادم ہے؟ آپ شاید نہ جانتے ہوں، لیکن یہ ممکن تو ہے، ہے نا؟ ایسا کیوں نہ ہو؟ تو امریکہ یا مغرب کے ساتھ ہی یہ حساسیت کیوں؟

Now pause for a second. If you are reading the above and feel annoyance, anger, incredulity, or you’re just thinking about all the ways that that statement is wrong, stop and ask yourself: Why? Why should this simple claim cause you so much discomfort? It’s not like the claim is actually blasphemous or has anything to do with theology. Also, when you think about the claim in the abstract, it is hardly peculiar or worthy of outrage, even if it turns out to be wrong. To understand this, ask yourself: Does Islam conflict with Vietnamese values? Does Islam conflict with the cultural values of Chile? You probably don’t know, but it is possible, right? Why couldn’t it be? So why the sensitivity with America or the West in particular?

لاحظتُ هذا في نفسي. لاحظتُ أنني تردّدتُ حتى في أن أصوغ لنفسي الادعاء بأن الإسلام والقيم الأمريكية قد تتعارض يوماً ما. شعرتُ بشيء من الانزعاج والتوجّس، وقد أزعجني ذلك في نفسي. كان دليلاً واضحاً على أن أفكاري متأثّرة تأثيراً عميقاً بسياقي، بطرق لستُ واعياً بها حتى.

I noticed this in myself. I noticed that I hesitated in even articlating to myself the claim that Islam and American values could potentially ever be in conflict. I felt a tinge of discomfort and trepidation and that bothered me about myself. It was a clear indication of how my thoughts are deeply influenced by my context in ways that I am not even aware of.

ليست نقطتي هنا شيئاً من هذا الهراء النسبي والمنظوري ما بعد الحداثي القائل بأن "كلنا متحيزون" وما شابه. إنه من الممكن تجاوز هذه التحيزات المعرفية. ونحن نفعل ذلك بمواءمة أفكارنا وأحوالنا الباطنة مع الحق الأعلى، ونفعل ذلك باتباع السنة ﷺ.

Now my point is not some relativistic, perspectival, postmodern nonsense about how “We are all biased,” etc. It is possible to transcend these cognitive biases. We do this by bringing our thoughts and inner states in conformity with the Higher Truth. And we do that by following the Sunnah.

قال رسول الله ﷺ:
