اخلاقی ترقی پسندی (moral progressivism) کے اہم ترین محرکات میں سے ایک سائنسی ترقی پر یقین ہے۔ اگر جدید دور میں سائنس اور ٹیکنالوجی کے بارے میں ہمارا علم اس قدر آگے بڑھ چکا ہے، تو یہ بات منطقی معلوم ہوتی ہے کہ ایک تہذیب کے طور پر ہم اخلاقی طور پر بھی ترقی کر چکے ہیں، اور ہمارا اخلاقی علم بھی ماضی کے لوگوں کے علم سے برتر ہے۔ استدلال کا یہ سلسلہ نیا نہیں ہے۔ یہ ایک ایسی سوچ ہے جس کے بارے میں تمام بڑی تہذیبوں نے اپنے بارے میں یہی یقین رکھا ہے، اور یہ ایک ایسا ذہنیت ہے جس کی قرآن میں براہِ راست مخالفت کی گئی ہے جب اللہ تعالیٰ ہمیں ماضی کی تہذیبوں کے باقیات اور کھنڈرات پر نظر ڈالنے کا حکم دیتا ہے، جو اپنی عظیم تکنیکی کامیابیوں کے باوجود، اپنے تکبر اور اللہ اور اس کے رسولوں ﷺ کے خلاف سرکشی کی وجہ سے تباہ کر دی گئی تھیں۔ درحقیقت، قرآن اس سے بھی آگے بڑھ کر یہ کہتا ہے کہ نہ صرف آپ کا یہ سوچنا کہ آپ کی طاقت اور تکنیکی کامیابی نیکی اور اخلاقی برتری میں ترجمان ہے، غلط ہے، بلکہ آپ کا یہ سوچنا بھی غلط ہے کہ آپ تاریخ کی طاقتور ترین اور تکنیکی طور پر سب سے زیادہ ترقی یافتہ تہذیب ہیں؛ کیونکہ طاقت، تعداد اور زمین پر اثر و رسوخ کے لحاظ سے اس سے بھی عظیم دیگر قومیں موجود تھیں۔
One of the main drivers of moral progressivism is the belief in scientific progress. If our knowledge of science and technology has advanced so much in the modern era, then it stands to reason that we as a civilization have also advanced morally, that our moral knowledge also is superior to that of peoples in the past. This line of reasoning is not new. It is something all major civilizations have believed of themselves, and it is a mindset that is directly opposed in the Quran when Allah tells us to look at the remnants and ruins of past civilizations who, despite their great technical achievements, were destroyed for their arrogance and rebellion against God and His messengers. In fact, the Quran goes further than this by saying, not only are you wrong for being arrogant in thinking that your strength and technical achievement translates to rectitude and moral superiority, but you are also wrong for thinking that you are the strongest and most technically advanced civilization of history. There were others greater in strength, numbers, and impact on the land.
"کیا انہوں نے زمین میں سفر نہیں کیا کہ وہ دیکھ لیتے کہ ان سے پہلے لوگوں کا انجام کیا ہوا تھا؟ اور وہ ان سے طاقت میں زیادہ تھے"
“Have they not traveled through the land and observed how was the end of those before them? And they were greater than them in power.”
فاطر (سورۃ فاطر 35:44)

"کیا انہوں نے زمین میں سفر نہیں کیا کہ وہ دیکھ لیتے کہ ان سے پہلے والے لوگوں کا انجام کیسا ہوا؟ وہ طاقت میں ان سے زیادہ مضبوط تھے اور زمین پر ان کے نشانات بھی زیادہ تھے، لیکن اللہ نے انہیں ان کے گناہوں کی وجہ سے پکڑ لیا، اور اللہ کی طرف سے ان کا کوئی بچانے والا نہ تھا۔"
“Have they not traveled through the land and observed how was the end of those who were before them? They were greater than them in strength and in impression on the land, but Allah seized them for their sins. And they had not from Allah any protector.”
غافر (سورۃ غافر، آیت 21)

"کیا انہوں نے زمین میں سفر نہیں کیا کہ وہ دیکھ لیتے کہ ان سے پہلے لوگوں کا انجام کیا ہوا تھا؟ وہ ان سے تعداد میں زیادہ تھے اور زمین پر طاقت اور اثر و رسوخ میں زیادہ، لیکن جو کچھ وہ کماتے تھے وہ انہیں (اللہ کے عذاب سے) بچا نہ سکا۔"
“Have they not traveled through the land and observed how was the end of those before them? They were more numerous than themselves and greater in strength and in impression on the land, but they were not availed by what they used to earn.”
غافر (سورۃ غافر، آیت 82)

"کیا انہوں نے زمین میں سفر نہیں کیا کہ وہ دیکھ لیتے کہ ان سے پہلے لوگوں کا انجام کیا ہوا تھا؟ وہ ان سے قوت میں زیادہ تھے، اور انہوں نے زمین کو (کھیتی باڑی کے ذریعے) آباد کیا اور اسے اس سے زیادہ بنا ڈالا جتنا یہ لوگ بنا چکے ہیں، اور ان کے پاس ان کے رسول واضح نشانیاں لے کر آئے تھے۔ اور اللہ نے کبھی ان پر ظلم نہیں کیا، بلکہ وہ خود اپنے آپ پر ظلم کر رہے تھے۔"
“Have they not traveled through the earth and observed how was the end of those before them? They were greater than them in power, and they plowed the earth and built it up more than they have built it up, and their messengers came to them with clear evidences. And Allah would not ever have wronged them, but they were wronging themselves.”

ہم شاید یہ سوچیں کہ کیا ماضی میں ایسی تہذیبیں موجود تھیں جو آج کے دور کی ہماری تہذیب سے زیادہ تکنیکی طور پر ترقی یافتہ تھیں؟ صرف اللہ ہی جانتا ہے۔ ہمیں خود بخود یہ فرض نہیں کر لینا چاہیے کہ ایسی کوئی تہذیب نہیں تھی۔ اس سے بھی اہم بات یہ ہے کہ ہمیں کسی قوم کی اقدار کا فیصلہ اس بنیاد پر نہیں کرنا چاہیے کہ وہ کتنی "جدید" ہیں، بلکہ اس بنیاد پر کرنا چاہیے کہ وہ اس بات کے ساتھ کتنی مکمل طور پر مطابقت رکھتی ہیں جو آخری رسول ﷺ لے کر آئے ہیں۔
We might wonder whether there were past civilizations that were more technically advanced than ours today. Only Allah knows. We shouldn’t automatically assume that there weren’t. More importantly, we should not judge a people’s values by how “modern” they are but by how completely they accord with what the last Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم has brought.
