10.12 Hadith And Epistemology: Adam’s Height
কিছু মুসলিম যখন এই হাদীসটি পড়েন, তখন তাঁদের মধ্যে অত্যন্ত সন্দেহবাদী প্রতিক্রিয়া দেখা যায়:

আল্লাহ আদমকে সৃষ্টি করলেন, আর তাঁর উচ্চতা ছিল ষাট হাত। এরপর তিনি বললেন, "যাও, ওই ফেরেশতাদের সালাম দাও এবং শোনো তারা তোমাকে কীভাবে সালাম দেয়, কারণ সেটাই হবে তোমার সালাম এবং তোমার বংশধরদের সালাম।" তিনি বললেন, "আস-সালামু আলাইকুম।" তারা বলল, "আস-সালামু আলাইকুম ওয়া রাহমাতুল্লাহ।" অতএব তারা "ওয়া রাহমাতুল্লাহ" কথাটি যোগ করল। আর যে কেউ জান্নাতে প্রবেশ করবে, সে আদমের আকৃতিতে থাকবে। এরপর থেকে মানুষের উচ্চতা ক্রমশ কমতে কমতে আজ পর্যন্ত এসেছে।43
“Allah created Adam and he was sixty cubits tall. Then He said, ‘Go and greet those angels and listen to how they greet you, for that will be your greeting and the greeting of your progeny.’ He said, ‘Al-salamu ‘alaykum (Peace be upon you).’ They said, ‘Al-salamu ‘alaykum wa rahmat-Allah (Peace be upon you and the mercy of Allah).’ So they added the words ‘wa rahmat Allah.’ And everyone who enters Paradise will be in the form of Adam. People kept on growing smaller until now.”43
এই মুসলিমরা জানতে চান যে আদম ও মানুষের এই উচ্চতা হওয়ার প্রমাণ কী? প্রশ্নটি মজার, কারণ যদি আপনি একজন মুসলিম হন, তাহলে প্রমাণ হলো সহীহ হাদীস। সেটিই প্রমাণ। কেউ যদি এটিকে প্রমাণ মনে না করেন, তবে সম্ভবত দুটি কারণের একটি থাকতে পারে। প্রথমত, যদি আপনি সাধারণভাবে সব হাদীসের প্রতিই সন্দেহপ্রবণ হন, তাহলে আপনি একজন বিভ্রান্ত মানুষ, আদমের উচ্চতার চেয়ে আপনার আরও বড় বিষয় নিয়ে ভাবার আছে। দ্বিতীয়ত, যদি আপনি আদমের উচ্চতা সম্পর্কে সহীহ হাদীসের চেয়ে বর্তমান বৈজ্ঞানিক ঐকমত্যকে বেশি নির্ভরযোগ্য জ্ঞানের উৎস মনে করেন, তাহলে আপনি হয় মনে করছেন যে নবী ﷺ তাঁর উচ্চতা ভুলভাবে বর্ণনা করেছেন, অথবা হাদীস বর্ণনাকারীরা ভুল করেছেন। আর হাদীসের বক্তব্য এবং আদমের উচ্চতার কথা একাধিক সহীহ হাদীসে উল্লেখ থাকার কথা বিবেচনা করলে, সেই ভুলটি হতে হবে বেশ ব্যাপক।
These Muslims want to know what is the evidence of Adam and humans being this height? It is a funny question because, if you are a Muslim, the evidence is the sahih hadith. That is the evidence. The only reason you would think that that is not evidence is if you are generally skeptical of all hadith, in which case you are just a confused person and have bigger things to worry about than the height of Adam, or you take current scientific consensus as a sounder source of knowledge about the height of Adam than sahih hadith, in which case, you think either the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم misdescribed his height or that the hadith transmitters made a mistake — and given the text of the hadith and the fact that the height of Adam is mentioned in multiple sahih hadith, it would have to have been a pretty extensive mistake.
আমরা এখন এসব বিষয় যাচাই করতে পারি। প্রথমে একটি কথা মনে রাখা দরকার যে হাদীসে বর্ণিত অনেক বিষয়ের ক্ষেত্রে আমরা বর্তমান বৈজ্ঞানিক ঐকমত্যকে প্রাসঙ্গিক মনে করি না। ইসরা ওয়াল-মি'রাজের কথা ভাবুন। কিংবা নবীগণের মু'জিযাগুলোর যেকোনোটির কথা ভাবুন। কিয়ামতের আলামতসমূহের যেকোনোটির কথা ভাবুন, যেমন ইয়াজূজ ও মা'জূজ ইত্যাদি। আর হাদীসের বিষয়ে আপনার কোনো আপত্তি থাকলে কুরআনে উল্লিখিত ঘটনা ও বিষয়গুলোর যেকোনোটির কথাও ভাবুন। তাই যদি বর্তমান বৈজ্ঞানিক ঐকমত্য এসব বিষয়ের কোনোটির সঙ্গেই সংশ্লিষ্ট না হয়, তবে আদম (আঃ)-এর উচ্চতার ক্ষেত্রে হঠাৎ এটি সব কিছু নির্ধারণকারী হয়ে উঠছে কেন?
We can evaluate all this. First, we should note that we don’t take current scientific consensus as relevant when it comes to many things described in hadith. Think of Al-Isra wal-mi`raj. Or any of the miracles of the prophets. Think of any of the signs of the Day of Judgment, e.g., ya’juj and ma’juj, etc. And if you have a problem with hadith, then consider any of the events and things mentioned in the Quran. So, if current scientific consensus is not germane to any of these topics, why is it suddenly so all-determinative when it comes to the height of Adam?
আমি আশঙ্কা করি যে যারা বর্তমান বৈজ্ঞানিক ঐকমত্যকে এত গুরুত্বের সঙ্গে নেয়, তারা প্রায়ই বিজ্ঞানের প্রকৃতি ও ইতিহাস সম্পর্কে গভীরভাবে অজ্ঞ থাকে। হার্ভার্ডে পদার্থবিজ্ঞানের ছাত্র হিসেবে, পাশাপাশি হার্ভার্ড ও টাফটস-এ দর্শন ও বিজ্ঞানের ইতিহাসের ছাত্র হিসেবে, এ বিষয়ে আমার ব্যক্তিগত অভিজ্ঞতা আছে। আমার কয়েকজন শিক্ষক ছিলেন নোবেল পুরস্কার বিজয়ী, অথবা পুরস্কার পাওয়ার পথে ছিলেন, আর বিজ্ঞানের ইতিহাসের মৌলিক কিছু বিষয়ে তাঁদের অজ্ঞতা ছিল বিস্ময়কর। তাঁরা মনে করতেন বিজ্ঞানের ইতিহাস জানা গুরুত্বপূর্ণ নয়। তা না হওয়ায় স্বাভাবিকভাবেই তাঁদের এই আগ্রহ ও জ্ঞানের অভাব বিজ্ঞান সম্পর্কে একটি সংকীর্ণ, সীমিত উপলব্ধির জন্ম দিয়েছিল, যা বিজ্ঞানে তাঁদের অসামান্য সাফল্যের পরিপ্রেক্ষিতে একটি বিড়ম্বনা।
