আমার আব্বা সবসময়ই খুব হাতের কাজে দক্ষ একজন মানুষ, আর ঘরের নানা কাজ নিজে হাতে করতে ভালোবাসেন, মাশাআল্লাহ। ছোটবেলায় তিনি আমাকে তাঁর সাথে কাজে সাহায্য করতে বলতেন, আর আমার তা একেবারেই ভালো লাগত না, তবুও শেষ পর্যন্ত আমি অনেক কিছু শিখে ফেলেছিলাম।

My dad has always been a very handy person and loves to take on home projects mashaAllah. When I was young, he would try to get me to help him and I never really enjoyed it, but I still ended up learning a lot.

তিনি আমাকে প্রথম দিকে যে শিক্ষাগুলো দিয়েছিলেন, তার একটি হলো—যখন তুমি কোনো প্রকল্প শুরু করো, তখন নিশ্চিত হতে হবে যে তুমি একটি পরিষ্কার ও মজবুত ভিত্তির উপর কাজ করছ। যেমন, যদি তুমি তোমার বাড়ির পাশের দেয়ালে নতুন রং করতে চাও, তবে প্রথমে পুরনো রঙের আস্তরণ পরিষ্কার করতে হবে, পচে যাওয়া কাঠ সরাতে হবে, ইত্যাদি। সব প্রস্তুতিমূলক কাজ শেষ হওয়ার পরেই আসল রং করা শুরু করা যায়। তুমি চাইলে প্রস্তুতির কাজ বাদ দিয়ে পুরনো জিনিসের উপরেই নতুন রং লাগাতে পারো, কিন্তু অল্প সময়ের মধ্যেই নতুন রং ফেটে যেতে ও উঠে যেতে শুরু করবে, আর অবস্থা আগের চেয়েও খারাপ হবে।

One of the things he taught me early on is that when you start a project, you have to make sure you are working on a clean, solid site. For example, if you want to re-paint the side of your house, you first have to clean off any old paint, take off any rotting wood, etc. Only after all that prep work is done can you actually start painting. You can always just forget the prep work and put new paint on top of the old stuff, but within a short period of time, the new paint will start to crack and peel and things will be even worse than before.
