মুসলিম সংস্কারক, উদারপন্থী ও প্রগতিশীলরা যারা লিঙ্গ-পৃথকীকরণের বিরোধিতা করেন, তাঁরা প্রায়ই খুব আক্রমণাত্মক হন, এবং তাঁদের এই আক্রমণাত্মকতা লিঙ্গ আলাদা করা উচিত - এই ধারণার প্রতি তাঁদের যে ক্ষোভ, তার সঙ্গে সামঞ্জস্যপূর্ণ। কিন্তু এটি এত বড় সমস্যা কেন? এমনকি সবচেয়ে ধর্মনিরপেক্ষ সমাজগুলোও কিছু পরিমাণে লিঙ্গ-পৃথকীকরণ চালু রাখে। শৌচাগার লিঙ্গভিত্তিক। পোশাক পরিবর্তনের কক্ষ (লকার রুম) লিঙ্গভিত্তিক। সাধারণভাবে খেলাধুলাও লিঙ্গভিত্তিক। ধর্মনিরপেক্ষ সমাজগুলো পুরুষ ও নারীকে স্বীকৃতি দেয় এবং অসংখ্য উপায়ে সেই লিঙ্গগত পার্থক্যগুলো কার্যকর করে।

Muslim reformists, liberals, progressives who oppose gender separation are often very aggressive, and their aggressiveness matches the indignation they feel at the notion that genders should be separated. But why is this such a problem? Even the most secular societies impose gender separation to some extent. Bathrooms are gendered. Locker rooms are gendered. Sports are gendered in general. Secular societies recognize male and female and operationalize those gender distinctions in countless ways.

মুসলমানরা লিঙ্গ-বিষয়ক ধারণাকে কিছুটা ভিন্নভাবে প্রয়োগ করে। কিন্তু মুসলিম রীতিনীতি এবং লিঙ্গ-পৃথকীকরণ প্রভাবশালী, পশ্চিমা মডেল থেকে ভিন্ন হওয়ায় সেটাই একটি সমস্যা হিসেবে দেখা দেয়। মুসলমানরা যে বিষয়টি ভিন্নভাবে করে, তা কেবল স্বীকার করার পরিবর্তে, এই সংস্কারক ও ইসলামের সমালোচকরা এমনভাবে উপস্থাপন করেন যেন ইসলামই একমাত্র ধর্ম ও জীবনদর্শন, যা লিঙ্গ-পৃথকীকরণকে সম্ভব করে তোলে, আর সেই কারণেই এটি পশ্চাৎপদ ও বর্বর।

Muslims simply operationalize gender somewhat differently. But since Muslim practices and gender separation differ from the dominant, Western model, that is a problem. Rather than just acknowledge that Muslims do it differently, these reformists and critics of Islam make it seem like Islam is the only religion and worldview that facilitates gender separation and is therefore backwards and barbaric.
