Con frecuencia escuchamos que la ley islámica necesita adaptarse a los tiempos. Con frecuencia escuchamos el argumento de que, claramente, nuestro mundo es distinto del mundo de la Arabia del siglo VII, en el momento de la llegada del Islam. We often hear that Islamic law needs to get with the times. We often hear the argument that clearly our world differs from the world of seventh-century Arabia at the advent of Islam. So, if times have changed, then law and ethics must change.

En primer lugar, las cosas no han cambiado tanto como a la gente le gusta pensar. Los seres humanos siguen siendo seres humanos. Nuestra naturaleza fundamental no se ha transformado de manera drástica como para exigir la clase de reformas que algunos progresistas y reformistas musulmanes han estado reclamando.

First of all, things have not changed as much as people like to think they have. Human beings are still human beings. Our fundamental nature has not drastically transformed such as would require the kind of reforms some Muslim progressives and reformers have been calling for.
