এই গ্রন্থটি বিশাল ইতিহাসের প্রেক্ষাপটে ফিলিস্তিনের বহুসাংস্কৃতিক পরিচয় ও অভিন্ন ইতিহাসকে স্থাপন করে। এটি সমগ্র অঞ্চলের দীর্ঘ ইতিহাসের মধ্যে ফিলিস্তিনের ইতিহাসকে স্থান দেয়, এবং নিকট প্রাচ্য ও পূর্ব ভূমধ্যসাগরীয় অঞ্চলের প্রাচীন, ধ্রুপদী, উত্তর-ধ্রুপদী, মধ্যযুগীয়, প্রারম্ভিক আধুনিক ও আধুনিক ইতিহাসের আলোকে তা উপস্থাপন করে। এর উদ্দেশ্য নির্লিপ্ত, বুদ্ধিবৃত্তিক দূরত্বে রচিত ইতিহাস উপস্থাপন নয়, বরং এমন একটি ইতিহাস উপস্থাপন যা সামাজিক, বুদ্ধিবৃত্তিক, সাংস্কৃতিক ও রাজনৈতিকভাবে অবহিত ও সম্পৃক্ত। বিস্তীর্ণ ইতিহাসের পরিসর আবরণের চেষ্টা করার পাশাপাশি এই গ্রন্থ নিচের তলার মানুষের ইতিহাস (history from below), সামাজিক স্মৃতি, সাংস্কৃতিক পরিচয় ও রাজনীতির প্রশ্নগুলোকে একসূত্রে গাঁথে।

This work locates the multicultural identity and shared histories of Palestine in a very long history of the whole region. It locates Palestinian history in the ancient, classical, post-classical, medieval, early and modern histories of the Near East and Eastern Mediterranean. The intention is not to produce an intellectually detached form of history but rather to offer a socially, intellectually, culturally and politically informed and engaged history. While attempting to cover the vast span of history, this work links questions of history from below, social memory, cultural identity and politics.
