Nachdem die christlichen Byzantiner die Römer abgelöst hatten, erlebten Palaestina und seine bedeutendsten Städte – Caesarea Palaestina, Jerusalem, Gaza, Neapolis (Nablus), Scythopolis (Beisan), Tiberias und Beit Jibrin (Eleutheropolis) – in der Antike ihr größtes Wachstum und ihren größten Wohlstand. In der gesamten frühchristlichen und byzantinischen Zeit, dem 4. bis 7. Jahrhundert n. Chr., blieb Palaestina der vorherrschende und allgemein verwendete Name für diese Region. Die ehemaligen römischen Provinzen „Syria Palaestina“ wurden von den christlichen Byzantinern aufgeteilt, die außerdem die Verwaltungsbezirke des Landes neu ordneten. Palaestina wurde in drei Unterabteilungen gegliedert. Die Ausbreitung des griechisch- und aramäischsprachigen Christentums im östlichen Mittelmeerraum, im Nahen Osten und in der römischen Provinz Arabia¹ sowie die Entstehung eines größeren Palästina im 4. Jahrhundert n. Chr. erweiterten das frühe römische Konzept von Palästina und die Bezeichnung, die griechische Schriftsteller der Klassik wie Herodot seit der Mitte des 5. Jahrhunderts v. Chr. verwendeten. Dieses größere Palästina bestand aus Palaestina Prima (im Zentrum des Landes), Palaestina Secunda (großen Teilen Galiläas) und Palaestina Salutaris (im Süden und Südosten).

After the Christian Byzantines replaced the Romans, Palaestina and its major cities – Caesarea-Palaestina, Jerusalem, Gaza, Neapolis (Nablus), Scythopolis (Beisan), Tiberias and Beit Jibrin (Eleutheropolis) – experienced their greatest growth and prosperity in Antiquity. Throughout the early Christian and Byzantine period, the 4th to the 7th centuries AD, Palaestina remained the dominant and universally applied name for this region. The former Roman provinces of ‘Syria Palaestina’ were split by the Christian Byzantines, who also redrew the administrative regions of the country. Palaestina was reorganised into three subdivisions. The spread of Greek- and Aramaic-speaking Christianity in the Eastern Mediterranean, Near East and Roman Provincia Arabia1 and the creation of greater Palestine in the 4th century AD further expanded the early Roman concept of Palestine and the designation employed by classical Greek writers such as Herodotus from the mid-5th century BC onwards. This greater Palestine consisted of Palaestina Prima (in the centre of the country), Palaestina Secunda (much of the Galilee) and Palaestina Salutaris (in the south and south-east).

Palaestina Salutaris (im 4. Jahrhundert geschaffen und später auch als Palaestina Tertia bekannt) umfasste die ehemalige römische Provinz Arabia (Ward 2008), Idumaea, den Naqab/Negev, Teile des Sinai, den Südwesten Transjordaniens, das Gebiet südlich des Toten Meeres und Arabia Petraea,4 dessen nabatäische Hauptstadt zu Beginn des 2. Jahrhunderts n. Chr. Petra war. Es wurde im 6. Jahrhundert n. Chr. von Arabia Petraea abgetrennt (Shahin 2005: 8). Petra wurde zur Hauptstadt von Palaestina Salutaris. Interessanterweise wurde die Benennung der „Drei Palästinas“ (Prima, Secunda und Tertia) von der klassischen und frühchristlichen Darstellung des „Drei in Einem“ inspiriert. Die bekannteste Analogie zu diesem griechisch-byzantinischen Konzept war die theologische Idee der Dreifaltigkeit, die auf dem Konzil von Nicäa im Jahr 325 n. Chr. festgelegt und kodifiziert wurde. Entscheidend ist, dass die „Drei Palästinas“ nicht als völlig getrennte Provinzen gedacht waren. Politisch, militärisch, kulturell und kirchlich wurden sie als „Drei in Einem“-Provinzen von Palaestina konzipiert, entwickelt, verwaltet und verteidigt. Die „Drei Palästinas“ waren in vier verschiedenen Bereichen eng miteinander verbunden:

Petra became the capital of Palaestina Salutaris Interestingly, the naming of the ‘Three Palestines’ (Prima, Secunda and Tertia) was inspired by classical and early Christian representation of ‘Three in One’. The most famous analogy of this Greco-Byzantine concept was the theological idea of Trinity which was settled and codified at the Council of Nicaea in 325 AD. Crucially the ‘Three Palestines’ were not conceived as totally separate provinces. Politically, militarily, culturally and ecclesiastically they were conceived and evolved, managed and defended as ‘Three in One’ provinces of Palaestina.
