मुबारक नैतिक प्रगतिवाद के मुख्य प्रेरक तत्वों में से एक वैज्ञानिक प्रगति में विश्वास है। यदि आधुनिक युग में विज्ञान और प्रौद्योगिकी के हमारे ज्ञान ने इतनी प्रगति कर ली है, तो स्वाभाविक रूप से यह मानना बनता है कि एक सभ्यता के रूप में हमने नैतिक रूप से भी प्रगति की है, और हमारा नैतिक ज्ञान भी अतीत के लोगों के नैतिक ज्ञान से श्रेष्ठ है। यह तर्क नया नहीं है। हर बड़ी सभ्यता ने स्वयं के बारे में यही माना है, और यह एक ऐसी मानसिकता है जिसका कुरआन में सीधा विरोध किया गया है, जब अल्लाह हमें उन बीती सभ्यताओं के अवशेषों और खंडहरों को देखने के लिए कहता है, जो अपनी महान तकनीकी उपलब्धियों के बावजूद अपने घमंड और अल्लाह एवं उसके रसूलों के विरुद्ध विद्रोह के कारण नष्ट कर दी गईं। वास्तव में कुरआन इससे भी आगे जाता है: वह कहता है कि तुम न केवल इस घमंड में गलत हो कि तुम्हारी शक्ति और तकनीकी उपलब्धि नैतिक सीधापन और नैतिक श्रेष्ठता में बदल जाती है, बल्कि तुम इस सोच में भी गलत हो कि तुम इतिहास की सबसे शक्तिशाली और तकनीकी रूप से सबसे उन्नत सभ्यता हो। ऐसे लोग भी थे जो शक्ति, संख्या और धरती पर अपने प्रभाव में इनसे बढ़कर थे।
One of the main drivers of moral progressivism is the belief in scientific progress. If our knowledge of science and technology has advanced so much in the modern era, then it stands to reason that we as a civilization have also advanced morally, that our moral knowledge also is superior to that of peoples in the past. This line of reasoning is not new. It is something all major civilizations have believed of themselves, and it is a mindset that is directly opposed in the Quran when Allah tells us to look at the remnants and ruins of past civilizations who, despite their great technical achievements, were destroyed for their arrogance and rebellion against God and His messengers. In fact, the Quran goes further than this by saying, not only are you wrong for being arrogant in thinking that your strength and technical achievement translates to rectitude and moral superiority, but you are also wrong for thinking that you are the strongest and most technically advanced civilization of history. There were others greater in strength, numbers, and impact on the land.

क्या उन्होंने धरती में यात्रा नहीं की और देखा नहीं कि उनसे पहले के लोगों का अंजाम कैसा हुआ? वे शक्ति में और धरती पर अपने निशानों में इनसे कहीं बढ़कर थे, परन्तु अल्लाह ने उन्हें उनके पापों के कारण पकड़ लिया। और अल्लाह से उन्हें बचाने वाला कोई न था।
“Have they not traveled through the land and observed how was the end of those who were before them? They were greater than them in strength and in impression on the land, but Allah seized them for their sins. And they had not from Allah any protector.”

क्या उन्होंने धरती पर चल-फिरकर नहीं देखा कि उनसे पहले के लोगों का अंत कैसा हुआ? वे संख्या में इनसे अधिक थे, शक्ति में बढ़कर थे और धरती पर अपने निशान छोड़ने में भी इनसे आगे थे, परन्तु जो कुछ वे कमाते थे, वह उनके किसी काम न आया।
“Have they not traveled through the land and observed how was the end of those before them? They were more numerous than themselves and greater in strength and in impression on the land, but they were not availed by what they used to earn.”

क्या उन्होंने धरती में चल-फिरकर नहीं देखा कि उनसे पहले के लोगों का अंजाम कैसा हुआ? वे शक्ति में इनसे कहीं बढ़कर थे, और उन्होंने धरती को जोता और उसे उससे कहीं अधिक आबाद किया जितना इन्होंने आबाद किया है, और उनके पास उनके रसूल स्पष्ट प्रमाण लेकर आए। और अल्लाह उन पर कभी ज़ुल्म करने वाला न था, बल्कि वे स्वयं अपने ऊपर ज़ुल्म कर रहे थे।
“Have they not traveled through the earth and observed how was the end of those before them? They were greater than them in power, and they plowed the earth and built it up more than they have built it up, and their messengers came to them with clear evidences. And Allah would not ever have wronged them, but they were wronging themselves.”

हम यह सोच सकते हैं कि क्या कभी ऐसी पुरानी सभ्यताएँ थीं जो तकनीकी रूप से आज की हमारी सभ्यता से अधिक उन्नत थीं। इसका ज्ञान केवल अल्लाह को है। हमें यह मान नहीं लेना चाहिए कि ऐसी कोई सभ्यता नहीं थी। इससे भी अधिक महत्वपूर्ण बात यह है कि हमें किसी जाति के मूल्यों को इस आधार पर नहीं आँकना चाहिए कि वह कितनी "आधुनिक" है, बल्कि इस आधार पर आँकना चाहिए कि वह अंतिम रसूल ﷺ जो लेकर आए, उससे कितनी पूर्ण रूप से मेल खाती है।
We might wonder whether there were past civilizations that were more technically advanced than ours today. Only Allah knows. We shouldn’t automatically assume that there weren’t. More importantly, we should not judge a people’s values by how “modern” they are but by how completely they accord with what the last Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم has brought.
