আহমাদ—আল্লাহ তাঁর প্রতি সন্তুষ্ট থাকুন—তাঁর পিতার কাছ থেকে কিছু ভাড়াটিয়া বাড়ি এবং যে বাড়িতে তিনি বসবাস করতেন সেটি উত্তরাধিকারসূত্রে লাভ করেন। তিনি ভাড়াটিয়া বাড়িগুলো ভাড়া দিয়ে দিতেন এবং সেই ভাড়ার আয়েই জীবনযাপন করতেন, ফলে কারও কাছে কিছু চাইতে হতো না। 208 40.1

Aḥmad—God be pleased with him—inherited from his father some tenements and the house where he lived. He rented out the tenements and lived off the rents, without having to ask anyone for anything.208 40.1

[মুহাম্মাদ ইবনু উবাইদুল্লাহ:] আহমাদ ইবনু হাম্বাল আমাকে বলেছেন, "প্রতি বছর আমি আমার বসবাসের ঘরটি জরিপ করি এবং তার উপর যাকাত আদায় করি, যেমনটি উমার ইবনুল খাত্তাব ইরাকের কৃষ্ণভূমি (আস-সাওয়াদ) সম্পর্কে বলেছিলেন।"209

[Muḥammad ibn ʿUbayd Allāh:] Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal told me, “Every year I survey the house I live in and pay the alms-tax on it, following what ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb said about the Black Land in Iraq.”209

আহমাদ সম্পত্তির এক অংশে বসবাস করতেন এবং অন্য অংশ অন্যদের ভাড়ায় দিতেন। আহমাদ ইবনে জা'ফর বর্ণনা করেন যে, কেউ একজন তাঁকে জিজ্ঞেস করল, তিনি কীভাবে জানেন যে তিনিই এর বৈধ মালিক।

Aḥmad lived in one part of the property and rented part of it out to others. Aḥmad ibn Jaʿfar reported that someone asked him how he knew that he was the rightful owner.

“এটা আমি আমার বাবার কাছ থেকে উত্তরাধিকার সূত্রে পেয়েছি,” তিনি উত্তর দিলেন। “যদি কেউ এসে প্রমাণ করে যে এটা তার, তাহলে আমি সরে গিয়ে তাকে এটা দিয়ে দেব।” [আল-মারূযী:] আমি আহমাদকে বলতে শুনেছি, “এই সম্পত্তি আমাদের জীবিকা নির্বাহ করে না, তবুও কিছু ফলন না দেওয়া পর্যন্ত আমি এটা আঁকড়ে আছি।”210 40.2

“It’s something I inherited from my father,” he replied. “If anyone comes and proves it’s his, I’d move out and give it to him.” [Al-Marrūdhī:] I heard Aḥmad say, “This property doesn’t support us, but I’m staying with it until it yields something.”210 40.2

আমি বললাম, “আমি শুনেছি কেউ একজনের পরামর্শ দিচ্ছিল যে, আপনি যদি এটা ছেড়ে দিয়ে কোনো বন্ধুকে আপনার জন্য এটি দেখাশোনা করতে দেন, তবে তিনি আরও ভালো বোধ করতেন।” আহমাদ বললেন, “এটা তো বিপর্যয়ের আমন্ত্রণ,” অথবা হয়তো তিনি বলেছিলেন, “এটা ভালো নয়।” তিনি আরও বললেন, “একবার এমন ব্যবস্থায় অভ্যস্ত হয়ে গেলে তুমি আর এটা ছাড়া বাঁচতে পারবে না।” তিনি যোগ করলেন, “আমি এর চেয়ে এভাবেই থাকা বেশি পছন্দ করি,” যে সম্পত্তি থেকে আয় হয় সেটির কথা উল্লেখ করে। অবশেষে তিনি আমাকে বললেন, “তুমি তো জানো এই আয় আমাদের সংসার চালায় না। আমি শুধু বাধ্য হয়েই এটা নিই।” [আল-বালাদী:] একবার আমি আহমাদের সঙ্গে বসে ছিলাম, তখন তাঁর একজন ভাড়াটিয়া তাঁকে দেড় দিরহাম এনে দিল। টাকাটা হাতে পড়তেই তিনি আমাকে যেখানে বসিয়ে রেখেছিলেন সেখানেই রেখে উঠে গেলেন এবং খুশি মনে নিজের ঘরে চলে গেলেন। আমার মনে হলো তাঁর এটি কোনো গুরুত্বপূর্ণ প্রয়োজনে লাগবে। 40.3

I said, “I heard someone suggest that he’d like it better if you gave it up and let a friend manage it for you.” “That’s an invitation to disaster,” said Aḥmad, or perhaps what he said was, “That’s no good.” He continued: “Once you get used to that sort of arrangement you can’t live without it.” He added, “I’d rather have it this way than any other,” referring to the property that generated the income. Finally he said to me, “You know the income doesn’t support us. I only take it because I have to.” [Al-Baladī:] Once, when I was sitting with Aḥmad, one of his tenants brought him a dirham and a half. As soon as it fell into his hands, he got up, leaving me where I was, and went into his house looking pleased. I had the feeling he needed it for something important. 40.3

আহমাদ কখনো কখনো এতটাই অভাবগ্রস্ত ছিলেন যে তাঁকে ক্ষেত থেকে শিষ কুড়িয়ে খেতে হতো।211 40.4

Aḥmad was sometimes so needy that he had to glean from the fields.211 40.4

[আল-তারাসূসী:] যে ব্যক্তি আহমাদকে আশ্রয় দিয়েছিলেন তিনি আমাকে বলেছেন: “তিনি যখন এখানে থাকতে এলেন, তখন শস্য কুড়াতে বেরিয়ে গেলেন। তিনি অল্প কিছু কুড়িয়ে ফিরে এলেন। আমি তাঁকে বললাম, ‘তুমি যা কুড়িয়েছ তার চেয়ে বেশি খেয়ে ফেলেছ!’ “তিনি বললেন, ‘আমি তাদের এমন কিছু করতে দেখেছি যা আমি নিজে করতে পারি না: তারা শস্য কুড়ানোর সময় চার হাত-পায়ে হামাগুড়ি দিয়ে চলত। কিন্তু আমি বসে বসে নিজেকে টেনে টেনে নিয়ে গেছি।’” [আল-মারূযী:] আহমাদ আমাকে বলেছেন, “আমি পায়ে হেঁটে সীমান্ত পর্যন্ত গেলাম, আর আমরা শস্য কুড়ালাম। আমি দেখলাম লোকেরা জমি চষে ফেলছে। কিন্তু কারও অনুমতি ছাড়া অন্যের জমিতে প্রবেশ করা উচিত নয়।” ৪০।5

[Al-Ṭarasūsī:] The man who gave lodging to Aḥmad told me: “When he came to stay here he went out to glean. He came back having collected only a little. I said to him, ‘You’ve eaten more than you gleaned!’ “He said, ‘I saw them doing something I couldn’t bring myself to do: when they gleaned, they would crawl on all fours. But I dragged myself along sitting down.’” [Al-Marrūdhī:] Aḥmad told me, “I walked out to the frontier on foot and we went gleaning. I saw people tearing up the fields. But no one should cross onto another’s land without permission.” 40.5

তিনি আমাকে আরও বললেন, “আমি তারসুস পর্যন্ত পুরো পথ হেঁটে গিয়েছিলাম। আমরা বেরিয়ে যেতাম এবং শিষ কুড়াতাম।”

He also told me, “I walked all the way to Tarsus. We used to go out and glean.”

আহমাদ কখনো কখনো এতটাই দরিদ্র ছিলেন যে পারিশ্রমিকের বিনিময়ে তাঁকে পাণ্ডুলিপি নকল করতে হতো। একবার সফরের খরচ মেটানোর জন্য তিনি কিছু উটচালকের কাছে নিজেকে ভাড়া দিয়েছিলেন। ইনশাআল্লাহ, এই ঘটনাটি পরবর্তী অধ্যায়ে বর্ণনা করা হবে। ৪০।6

Aḥmad was sometimes so poor that he had to copy manuscripts for a fee. To meet his expenses while traveling, he once hired himself out to some camel drivers. This episode will be described in the next chapter, God willing. 40.6
