[আদ-দূরী:] যখন আহমাদ ইবনু হাম্বাল বসরার কিছু হাদীস বর্ণনাকারীর কাছে আমার জন্য একটি পরিচয়পত্র লিখেছিলেন, তখন তিনি আমাকে কেবল “হাদীসের সন্ধানকারী একজন” বলে উল্লেখ করেছিলেন। ৪৯1

[Al-Dūrī:] When Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal wrote me a letter of introduction to some Hadith transmitters in Basra, he called me simply “someone seeking Hadith.” 49.1

[মুহাম্মাদ ইবনু ইবরাহীম:] আমি শুনেছি যে, আহমাদ ইবনু হাম্বালের কাছে তাঁর হাদীসবেত্তা সঙ্গীদের একটি দল এসেছিলেন, তখন তিনি কেবল হাতে যে টাকা ছিল তা দিয়েই তাঁদের খাবার কিনে দিয়েছিলেন।২৬৪ আমি আরও শুনেছি যে, আল-মুতাওয়াক্কিল যখন তাঁকে সামাররায় নিয়ে যান, তখন তিনি রাজপ্রাসাদে প্রস্তুত করা কোনো কিছুই স্পর্শ করতে অস্বীকার করেন, এবং বাগদাদ থেকে অর্থ এসে পৌঁছানোর অপেক্ষায় থাকাকালীন এক কাইলাজাহ—অর্থাৎ এক-চতুর্থাংশ যবের আটা২৬৫—দিয়ে পনেরো দিন কাটিয়ে দেন। ৪৯।2

[Muḥammad ibn Ibrāhīm:] I heard that when Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal was visited by a group of his fellow Hadith-men, he bought them something to eat using only the money he had on hand.264 I also heard that when al-Mutawakkil brought him to Samarra he refused to touch anything prepared at the palace, and made a kaylajah—a fourth of barley meal265—last for fifteen days while he waited for money to reach him from Baghdad. 49.2
