[Al-Hayḍam’s father:] 90.3

जब अब तुमने शिक्षा की बात कही और अहमद चले गए।

When now you told of learning and of Aḥmad gone.

आपने शायद कहा था कि झाग उगलता हुआ समुद्र सूखा था।

You might have said the foaming sea was dry.

उदार हृदय वाला, धर्मपरायणता वाला, और प्रभुत्वपूर्ण शासन वाला।

Of a gen’rous heart, of piety and lordly sway.

ऐसे दृढ़ ईमान वाले व्यक्ति से हम वंचित हो गए हैं।

Of one so firm in faith are we bereft.

उसके आने पर, आपको वसंत की साँस का एहसास हुआ।

At his approach, you felt the breath of spring.

जैसा उनके नाम के अनुरूप है, सभी ने उनकी प्रशंसा में ही बात की।484

As befits his name, all spoke of him to praise.484

तक़वा (परहेज़गारी) में उनके जैसा शायद ही कोई सुफ़यान जैसा था।

Most like Sufyān in piety was he.

न ही मिस्अर और मिअज़ाद उसे बहुत पीछे छोड़ पाए।

Nor did Misʿar or Miʿḍad leave him far behind.

उन्हीं की तरह, उसने थोड़ा ही चाहा, और सही मार्ग दिखाया गया।

Like them, he little sought, and guided right.

उसने स्वयं को त्याग दिया, और हमें जीने का तरीका दिखाया।

Denied himself, and showed us how to live.

इन सब बातों में उसी का इनाम अकेला था।

In all these things was his alone the prize.

इन सब बातों में हमने उन्हें अतुलनीय कहा।

In all these things did we him call unmatched.

वापस आओ! तुम्हारे हाथ ईमान की इमारत हैं।

Come back! Your hands an edifice of faith.

उसने बनवाया, इस दुनिया में रहने के लिए कोई महल नहीं।

Did build, not a palace to inhabit in this world.

आपने किसी उक़ाब-पाँव घोड़े की चाह नहीं की।

You craved no eagle-footed steed.

न सुडौल दास, जिन्न की तरह मोहक।

Nor shapely slave, bewitching as the jinn.

सुनहरी बुनावट वाले और सजावटी वस्त्रों से सुसज्जित।

In finery bedecked, and golden weave.

बाँस के झुरमुट की तरह लहराती हुई, जब वह चलती है।

Swaying like a cane-brake when she walks.

लेकिन हर किसी के लिए वह निर्णायक घड़ी अवश्य आएगी, जब मृत्यु आ पहुँचेगी।

But to each must come that fateful hour when death.

आते हैं, दुनिया के किरायेदार अपने साथ ले जाने के लिए।

Arrives, the tenants of the world to lead away.

और इस दुनिया से वे केवल एक ही चीज़ ले जा सकते हैं।

And from this world can they but one thing take.

वे कर्म जो उन्होंने उस समय आगे भेज दिए थे जब अभी उनके पास अवसर था।485

The deeds they stored away while yet they could.485

अल-हय्ज़म ने अपने पिता की एक कविता सुनाई, जिसमें ये पंक्तियाँ शामिल थीं: 90.5

Al-Hayḍam recited a poem by his father, including these lines: 90.5

दुनिया से विरक्त लोग जो आँसू बहाते हैं, उनमें आँसू और मिलाओ।

To the tears that world-renouncers weep, add tears.

और जो लोग अपने रब से डरते हैं, वे इसे देख लें।

And let the ones who fear their Lord behold.

और डरो, और अधिक डरो। वे तुम्हारे लिए रोते हैं, उनकी आँखें।

And fear the more. They mourn for you, their eyes.

नींद से वंचित, उनका एकमात्र सहारा आँसू।

Bereft of sleep, their only comfort tears.

धरती की गोद में अच्छे अहमद लेटे हैं, जितनी दूर तक।

Embraced by earth good Aḥmad lies, as far.

हमारी ओर से, जो भी हो सकता है। बादल सुकून दें।

From us as anyone can be. May clouds refresh.

उसकी कब्र पर बारिश होती रहे, जैसे दिन सालों में बदल जाते हैं!486

His grave with rain as days turn into years!486
