Tevredenheid (qana`a) is een verloren deugd in onze tijd. Waarom?

Contentment (qana`a) is a lost virtue in our times. Why?

We worden voortdurend geconditioneerd door de moderne kapitalistische wereld om onszelf te zien als de meesters van ons eigen lot. Alles wat ons van succes en rijkdom scheidt, is onze eigen inspanning, passie en gedrevenheid, zo wordt ons verteld. De concepten van de bepaling en verdeling van Allah komen nergens in voor. Hierdoor kunnen mensen nooit tevreden zijn, omdat ze op zichzelf vertrouwen, ondanks de realiteit dat wij allen machteloos zijn en het Allah is die beslist.

We are constantly being conditioned by the modern capitalistic world to see ourselves as masters of our own destiny. All that separates us from success and riches is our own effort and passion and drive, so we are told. The concepts of Allah’s decree and apportionment are nowhere in the picture. So people can never be content because they rely on themselves despite the reality that we are all impotent and it is Allah who decides.

Dit zijn zaken van het hart. Als je jezelf ontevreden en rusteloos vindt in het leven, reflecteer dan op tevredenheid en je overtuiging in de kracht en de controle van je Schepper.

These are matters of the heart. If you find yourself unsatisfied in life and restless, reflect on contentment and your conviction in the power and the control of your Creator.
