তাওয়াতুর শাব্দিক অর্থে হলো একের পর এক, এমনভাবে জিনিসগুলো ধারাবাহিকভাবে আসা যাদের মাঝে সময়ের ব্যবধান থাকে। এর প্রমাণ আল্লাহ তা'আলার এই বাণী: "অতঃপর আমি আমার রাসূলদেরকে একের পর এক প্রেরণ করেছি..." (সূরা আল-মু'মিনূন, ৪৪), অর্থাৎ একের পর এক, সময়ের ব্যবধানসহ। তাওয়াতুর মানে বারবার আসা বা পুনঃপুন বর্ণিত হওয়া। আর উসূলবিদদের পরিভাষায় "খবরে মুতাওয়াতির" হলো এমন খবর যা এমন একটি বিপুল জনগোষ্ঠী বর্ণনা করেন যাদের সংখ্যা এতটাই বেশি যে তাদের কথার মাধ্যমে নিশ্চিত জ্ঞান অর্জিত হয়, এবং তাদের সম্মিলিতভাবে মিথ্যা বলার কল্পনা স্বাভাবিকভাবে অসম্ভব হয়। তবে এর জন্য শর্ত হলো, তারা যা বলছেন সে সম্পর্কে তাদের নিশ্চিত থাকতে হবে এবং কোনো সন্দেহ থাকা চলবে না। তাদের জ্ঞান হতে হবে শোনা ও প্রত্যক্ষ করার ভিত্তিতে, বুদ্ধি খাটিয়ে অনুমান করার ভিত্তিতে নয়। এই শর্ত পূরণকারী একটি দল সাহাবায়ে কেরামের যুগে, তাবেঈদের যুগে এবং তাবে-তাবেঈদের যুগে থাকতে হবে; ফলে খবরের শুরু, মধ্য ও শেষ, তিন স্তরই সমান গুরুত্বের। সুতরাং খবরে মুতাওয়াতির হলো তা, যা এই তিন যুগে এমন এক বিশাল জনসমাবেশ বর্ণনা করেছেন যাদের মিথ্যায় একমত হওয়া স্বাভাবিকভাবে অসম্ভব, এবং হাদীস বর্ণনার ক্ষেত্রে এই তিন যুগের বাইরের কোনো যুগকে কোনোভাবেই বিবেচনায় নেওয়া হবে না।

The tawaator linguistically is the succession of the things one after the other with a time limit in between, and of this is the saying of Allah Ta'ala: Then sent We Our Messengers in succession…) 44 Surat Al Mu'minoun, means one after one with time limit. The tawaator is the recurrence, and al khabar al mutawaatir in the terminology of the usoul scholars is the report (khabar) transmitted by a group which reach in their multitude the extent of the certainty (ilm) which occurred for their saying, the certainty would not occur for the saying of this group and it would not be mutawaatir unless they are certain of what they told, and not in any doubt about it. Their knowledge must be based on the hearing and the witnessing not on the figuring out, there must be a group that fulfills these conditions in the era of the Sahaabah, the era Taabi'ine and the Taabi'y al Taabi'ine, so the two sides and the middle of the khabar are equal. Accordingly, the mutawaatir report is what was narrated in the three eras by a large gathering that their collusion to lie is normally impossible, and no consideration at all for any era other then those three in the narration of the Hadeeth.
