Es la ciencia de aquellas reglas mediante las cuales se conoce la condición de la sanad [cadena de transmisión] y del matn [texto del ḥadīth]. Su objetivo es diferenciar el ḥadīth ṣaḥīḥ de los demás. Existen dos tipos: la ciencia del ḥadīth referente a la transmisión [riwāya] y la ciencia del ḥadīth referente al significado [dirāya]. En cuanto a la referente a la transmisión, comprende la transmisión de los dichos del Profeta ﷺ, sus acciones, su aprobación y sus atributos, en lo que respecta a su narración, precisión y transcripción exacta de las palabras [taḥrīr alfāẓ]. En cuanto a la referente al significado, a través de ella se conocen la realidad, las condiciones, los tipos y las reglas de la transmisión, así como el estado de los transmisores, sus condiciones, los tipos de transmisiones y lo relacionado con ello. La dirāya abarca también el conocimiento del significado contenido en el ḥadīth en cuanto a si contradice un texto definitivo.

It is the science of those laws whereby the condition of the sanad [chain of transmission] and matn [text of the ḥadīth] is known. Its objective is to differentiate the sahīh hadīth from the others. It is of two types: the science of hadīth pertaining to transmission [riwāya] and the science of the hadīth pertaining to meaning [dirāya]. As for the one pertaining to transmission, it includes the transmission of the sayings of the Prophet , his actions, consent and attributes, with repsect to their narration, accuracy and transcription of words [tahrīr alfādh]. As for the one pertaining to the meaning, the reality, conditions, types and rules of transmission are known through it, as well as the state of the transmitters, their conditions, the types of the transmissions and that which is related to it. Dirāya also covers knowledge of the meaning contained in the hadīth in terms of whether it contradicts a definitive text.
