Na língua, at-taqlīd significa colocar algo no pescoço com a sua envolvência. Depois, passou a ser usado para confiar ou delegar um assunto a alguém, como se a pessoa tivesse amarrado o assunto ao próprio pescoço.

At-Taqleed linguistically is the placing of the matter in the neck with an encompassment of it. Then it is used to entrust or delegate the matter to the person, as if it has tied the matter to his neck.

Taqlīd, segundo seu significado na Sharī'ah, é agir de acordo com a opinião de outrem sem uma Ḥujjah Mulzimah (prova vinculante). Isso ocorre, por exemplo, quando o ʿĀmmī adota a opinião do Mujtahid, ou quando o Mujtahid adota a opinião de outro Mujtahid.

At-Taqleed, according to its Shar’a meaning, is to act in accordance to the opinion of another without a Hujjah Mulzimah (A binding proof). That is like the ‘Aamiy taking the opinion of the Mujtahid or the Mujtahid taking the opinion of another Mujtahid
