মাফহূম আল-মুখালাফাহ হলো এমন বিষয়, যেখানে শব্দের মাদলূল (নির্দেশিত অর্থ), যা বক্তব্যের স্থান বা অবস্থায় রয়েছে, নীরবতার (সুকূত) স্থান বা অবস্থায় তার নির্দেশিত অর্থের (মাদলূল) বিপরীত হয়। একে 'দালীলুল-খিতাব' (সম্বোধনের প্রমাণ) বলা হয়, কারণ শারিয়ের খিতাব (আইন প্রণেতার সম্বোধন) এর দিকে নির্দেশ ও পথপ্রদর্শন করে, যেমন একে 'লাহনুল-খিতাব' (সম্বোধনের বোধ/বুদ্ধি) নামেও জানা যায়। মাফহূম আল-মুখালাফাহ চার প্রকার বা শ্রেণিতে কাজে লাগানো হয়, যা হলো:

The Mafhoom Al-Mukhaalafah is that which the Madlool (indicated meaning) of the Lafzh (wording) in the place or situation of Sukoot (silence) is in opposition to its indicated meaning (Madlool) in the situation or place of utterance. It is (also) called ‘Daleel ul-Khitaab’ (evidence of the address) because the Khitaab Ash-Shaari’ (address of the Legislator) indicates and guides to it just as it has also been known as ‘Lahin ul-Khitaab’ (understanding/intellect of the address).
