El Ijtihad, lingüísticamente, significa el esfuerzo y el agotamiento de la capacidad respecto a una acción o empresa. No se utiliza sino para aquello que incluye dentro de sí el esfuerzo. Se dice, por ejemplo: el hombre hizo ijtihad al cargar una piedra pesada de molino de mano, pero no hizo ijtihad al cargar una pluma.
Al-Ijtihaad linguistically means the exertion of effort and exhaustion of capability in respect to an action or undertaking. It is not used except for that which includes within it effort. It is said for instance: That the man made Ijtihaad when carrying a heavy stone hand milling grinder but he did not do Ijtihaad when carrying a feather.

Es el esfuerzo y la aplicación de la capacidad (y del empeño) para buscar el Zhann (lo que se considera más probable) de un asunto de los Ahkaam Ash-Shar'iyah, en el caso en que el Mujtahid siente que es incapaz de hacer nada más (o de esforzarse más).
It is the exertion of the capability (and effort) to seek the Zhann (what is thought most probable) of a matter from the Ahkaam Ash-Shar’iyah in the case where the Mujtahid feels that he is incapable of doing any more (or exerting any more effort).
Esto significa que el mujtahid pone todo su esfuerzo intelectual para deducir las normas prácticas de la Shariah a partir de sus evidencias detalladas, en el caso de que sienta que no puede llegar a producir nada más exacto o correcto que lo que ya ha alcanzado (es decir, lo que ha concluido y deducido).
The meaning of this is that the Mujtahid exerts his mental efforts to deduce the practical Ahkaam Ash-Shar’iyah from its detailed evidences, in the case where he feels the inability to come up with and produce anything more accurate or correct than what he has arrived at (i.e. concluded and deduced).
El ijtihad se produce con respecto a los nusús (textos), cuyas evidencias son zhanniyyah (no definitivas), es decir, aquellos textos que tienen la posibilidad de admitir más de un significado. Este es el caso del siguiente aleya:
Ijtihaad occurs in respect to the Nusoos (texts), the evidences of which are Zhanniyah (indefinite). Meaning those texts which have the potential to hold more than one meaning. This is like the Aayah:
