এই সূরাটি মক্কায় অবতীর্ণ হয়েছে। এতে ইসলামের প্রতি মুশরিকদের প্রতিক্রিয়ার কিছু দিক বর্ণিত হয়েছে। এতে তাদের সহজ-সরল উত্তর ও তাদের যুক্তি ও নিদর্শনের প্রতি তাদের হালকা জবাবের কথা উল্লেখ করা হয়েছে, সত্যের প্রতি তাদের একগুঁয়ে প্রত্যাখ্যানের কথা বলা হয়েছে এবং দেখানো হয়েছে কীভাবে তারা নির্লজ্জভাবে প্রবৃত্তির অনুসরণ করেছিল। কুরআন তাদের হৃদয়কে আল্লাহর হিদায়াতের প্রতি মোহরাঙ্কিত হিসেবে চিত্রিত করেছে, যারা তাদের খেয়ালখুশি যেদিকে নিয়ে যায় সেদিকেই বিভ্রান্তভাবে ঘুরে বেড়ায়। তবুও কুরআন তাদের সামনে আল্লাহর নিদর্শনসমূহ উপস্থাপন করতে থেকেছে, তাদেরকে আল্লাহর শাস্তির কথা স্মরণ করিয়ে দিয়েছে এবং আল্লাহর পুরস্কার ও মহাবিশ্বে কার্যকর তাঁর বিধানসমূহের বর্ণনা দিয়েছে।

This surah, revealed in Makkah, describes some aspects of the reception Islam received from the idolaters. It reports their facile answers to its arguments and signs, states their stubborn rejection of the truth and shows how they unashamedly pursued desire. The Qur’an also portrays their minds as sealed to Divine guidance, straying in whatever direction their fancies led them. Yet the Qur’an continued to confront them with God’s signs, reminded them of God’s punishment and described His reward and His laws that operate in the universe.
