এই সূরাটি সেই প্রতিশ্রুত মহান রাতের কথা বলে, যাকে সমগ্র সৃষ্টিজগৎ আনন্দ ও প্রার্থনার মাধ্যমে স্মরণ করে। এটি ছিল এই জগৎ ও মহান সত্তার মধ্যে পরিপূর্ণ মিলনের রাত। সেই রাতেই মুহাম্মাদ ﷺ-এর উপর কুরআন অবতরণের সূচনা হয়, যা মানবইতিহাসে তার মহিমা এবং সমগ্র মানবজীবনের জন্য তার তাৎপর্যের দিক থেকে অতুলনীয় একটি ঘটনা। এর মহত্ত্ব মানুষের উপলব্ধির অনেক ঊর্ধ্বে। “নিশ্চয়ই আমি এটি [অর্থাৎ কুরআন] কদরের রাতে অবতীর্ণ করেছি। কদরের রাত কী, তুমি কি জানো? কদরের রাত হাজার মাসের চেয়ে উত্তম।” (আয়াত ১-৩)

This sūrah speaks about the promised great night which the whole universe marks with joy and prayer. It is the night of perfect communion between this world and the Supreme society. That night marked the beginning of the revelation of the Qur’ān to Muĥammad (peace be upon him), an event unparalleled in the history of mankind for its splendour and the significance it has for the life of mankind as a whole. Its greatness is far beyond human perception. “From on high have We bestowed it [i.e. the Qur’ān] on the Night of Power. Would that you knew what the Night of Power is! The Night of Power is better than a thousand months.” (Verses 1-3)

কুরআনের যেসব আয়াত এই মহান ঘটনার বর্ণনা দেয়, সেগুলো আল্লাহ তাআলার সুস্পষ্ট ও উজ্জ্বল নূরে আলোকিত। "নিশ্চয়ই আমি এটি কদরের রাতে অবতীর্ণ করেছি।" (আয়াত ১) এরপর আছে ফেরেশতা ও রূহের আলো, যা পৃথিবী ও উর্ধ্বলোকের মাঝে চলাচল করে। "সেই রাতে ফেরেশতাগণ ও রূহ তাদের প্রতিপালকের অনুমতিক্রমে প্রতিটি বিষয়ে অবতরণ করে।" (আয়াত ৪) তদুপরি রয়েছে ভোরের আলো, যাকে সূরাটি কুরআনের আলো ও ফেরেশতাদের আলোর সঙ্গে এবং তাদের শান্তির চেতনার সঙ্গে পূর্ণ সামঞ্জস্যপূর্ণ হিসেবে উপস্থাপন করে: "সেই রাত ভোরের উদয় পর্যন্ত শান্তিময়।" (আয়াত ৫)

The Qur’ānic statements which relate this great event radiate with God’s clear and shining light: “From on high We bestowed it on the Night of Power.” (Verse 1) There is also the light of the angels and the Spirit moving between the earth and the Supreme society. “On that night the angels and the Spirit by their Lord’s leave descend with all His decrees.” (Verse 4) In addition, there is also the light of dawn which the sūrah represents as perfectly harmonious with the light of the Qur’ān and the angels as well as with their spirit of peace: “That night is peace, till the break of dawn.” (Verse 5)

এখানে যে রাতের কথা বলা হচ্ছে, সেটিই সূরা ৪৪, আদ-দুখান-এ উল্লিখিত রাত: "আমি একে [অর্থাৎ কুরআনকে] এক বরকতময় রাতে অবতীর্ণ করেছি, কারণ আমি মানুষকে সতর্ক করতে চেয়েছিলাম; সেই রাতে প্রতিটি বিধান আমার পক্ষ থেকে আদেশরূপে সুস্পষ্ট করে দেওয়া হয়েছিল। আমি সর্বদাই তোমার প্রতিপালকের পক্ষ থেকে রহমতস্বরূপ রাসূল প্রেরণ করেছি। তিনিই সব শোনেন এবং সব জানেন।" (৪৪: ৩-৬) এটি সুনিশ্চিতভাবে রমাদান মাসের একটি রাত, যেমন সূরা ২, আল-বাকারাহ-তে বলা হয়েছে: "রমাদান মাসেই কুরআন অবতীর্ণ হয়েছিল: মানুষের জন্য হিদায়াত, এবং সেই হিদায়াতের সুস্পষ্ট প্রমাণ ও হক ও বাতিলের মধ্যে পার্থক্যকারী মানদণ্ড।" (২: ১৮৫) এর অর্থ হলো, লাইলাতুল কদর ছিল নবী ﷺ-এর ওপর কুরআন অবতরণের সূচনা এবং মানুষের কাছে তা পৌঁছে দেওয়ার তাঁর দায়িত্বের সূচনাকাল।
