آسمانوں اور زمین میں جو کچھ ہے، سب خدا کی بے انتہا پاکی بیان کرتا ہے۔

All that is in the heavens and in the earth extols God's limitless glory:

وہی غالب، حکمت والا ہے۔ (آیت 1)

for He alone is the almighty, truly wise. (Verse 1)

پوری کائنات اس خدائے عزیز و حکیم کی تسبیح میں شریک ہے، جس کی قوت اس کی لامتناہی حکمت کے ساتھ جڑی ہوئی ہے۔ یہ تسبیح اس سورت کا آغاز ہے، جو مسلمانوں پر یہ واضح کرتی ہے کہ ان کا دین الٰہی ایمان کا آخری اور حتمی روپ ہے۔ انہیں توحید پر مبنی اس دین کا امین بنایا گیا ہے، اور وہ کافروں اور مشرکوں کی طرف سے کی جانے والی ہر انحراف کی روش کی مذمت کرتے ہیں۔ مسلمانوں کو اس دین کی حمایت میں جدوجہد کرنے کا بھی حکم دیا گیا ہے، وہ دین جسے خدا نے دوسرے تمام ادیان پر غالب کرنے کا ارادہ فرمایا ہے، خواہ یہ بات کافروں کو کتنی ہی ناگوار کیوں نہ ہو۔ لہٰذا یہ آغاز اس بات کی طرف اشارہ کرتا ہے کہ مسلمانوں کو سونپی گئی امانت پوری کائنات کی امانت ہے، اور وہ دین جس کے لیے وہ جدوجہد کرتے ہیں، آسمانوں اور زمین کی تمام مخلوقات کا دین ہے۔ چنانچہ اس دین کا غلبہ ایک آفاقی حقیقت ہے، جو اس پوری کائنات کے ہم آہنگ ہے جو خدائے عزیز کی طرف رجوع کیے ہوئے ہے۔

The whole universe participates in this glorification of God Almighty whose might is combined with His infinite wisdom. This glorification begins this surah, which declares to Muslims that their religion is the last and final version of the divine faith. They are placed in a position of trustees of this faith based on God’s oneness, denouncing all deviation perpetrated by unbelievers and idolaters. Muslims are also called upon to strive in support of this faith, which God has willed to prevail over all other religions, hateful as this may be to unbelievers. This opening, thus, implies that the trust given to Muslims belongs to the entire universe; the faith they strive for is the faith of all creatures in the heavens and the earth. Hence, this religions prevalence is a universal phenomenon, one that is in line with the whole universe as it turns to God Almighty.

ایک گروہِ اہلِ ایمان کو ایک ایسے فعل پر سخت ملامت کی گئی ہے جو خدا کے نزدیک خاص طور پر ناپسندیدہ تھا۔ اہلِ ایمان کے شایانِ شان نہ تھا یہ طرزِ عمل۔

A group of believers are strongly reproached for something they did that was particularly hateful to God. This was inappropriate behaviour for believers:

اے ایمان والو! تم وہ بات کیوں کہتے ہو جو کرتے نہیں؟ خدا کے نزدیک یہ بات بہت ناپسندیدہ ہے کہ تم وہ کہو جو کرو نہیں۔ بے شک خدا ان لوگوں سے محبت کرتا ہے جو اُس کی راہ میں صف بستہ ہو کر لڑتے ہیں، گویا وہ ایک سیسہ پلائی ہوئی مضبوط دیوار ہیں۔ (آیات 2–4)

Believers! Why do you say what you do not do? Most loathsome is it in the sight of God that you say what you do not do! God loves indeed those who fight in His cause in solid ranks, as though they were a firm and compact building, (verses 2—4)

ابنِ عباسؓ روایت کرتے ہیں کہ جہاد فرض ہونے سے پہلے کچھ اہلِ ایمان کہا کرتے تھے: "ہم چاہتے ہیں کہ خدا ہمیں بتائے کہ اسے کون سا عمل سب سے زیادہ محبوب ہے، تاکہ ہم وہی کریں۔" خدا نے اپنے رسول ﷺ کو حکم دیا کہ وہ کہہ دیں کہ خدا کو سب سے زیادہ محبوب وہ ایمان ہے جس میں شک کی کوئی گنجائش نہ ہو، اور ایمان کو رد کرنے والے گمراہ لوگوں کے خلاف جدوجہد کرنا۔ تاہم جب جہاد فرض کیا گیا تو بعض اہلِ ایمان کو یہ بات دشوار محسوس ہوئی اور وہ اسے ناپسند کرنے لگے۔ اسی پر یہ آیات نازل ہوئیں: "اے ایمان والو! تم وہ بات کیوں کہتے ہو جو کرتے نہیں؟ خدا کے نزدیک یہ بات بہت بڑی ناراضی کی ہے کہ تم وہ کہو جو کرو نہیں۔" (آیت 2-3)۔ طبریؒ نے بھی اپنی تفسیر میں اس سورت کے تحت اس کی تصدیق کی ہے۔

Ibn ‘Abbas reports that prior to making Jihad obligatory, some believers used to say: “We wish that God would tell us what action is most loved by Him, so that we could do it.” God instructed His Messenger to say that what God loves most is a belief in Him that allows no room for doubt, and striving against deviant people who reject the faith. However, when Jihad was made obligatory, a number of believers found it difficult, and they disliked it distasteful. Hence the revelation of the verses saying: “Believers! Why do you say what you do not do? Most loathsome is it in the sight of God that you say what you do not do!” (Verse 2—3) Al-Tabari also confirmed this in his commentary on the surah.

دوسری طرف، ابن کثیرؒ اپنی تفسیر میں کہتے ہیں کہ اکثر علماء اس بات پر متفق ہیں کہ یہ آیات اس وقت نازل ہوئیں جب بعض مسلمانوں نے جہاد سے منہ موڑ لیا، جب کہ اسے فرض قرار دیا جا چکا تھا۔ وہ مزید کہتے ہیں کہ یہ قرآن کی دوسری آیات کے مانند ہے: "کیا تم نے ان لوگوں کو نہیں دیکھا جن سے کہا گیا تھا: 'اپنے ہاتھ (لڑائی سے) روکے رکھو، نماز قائم کرو، اور زکوٰۃ ادا کرو' [یعنی پاکیزگی بخشنے والے صدقات]؟"

On the other hand, Ibn Kathlr says in his commentary that the majority of scholars agree that these verses were revealed when some Muslims turned away from Jihad when it was declared a duty. He adds that this is the same as other verses in the Quran: “Are you not aware of those who have been told, ‘Hold back your hands [from fighting], and attend regularly to prayer, and pay your zakat [i.e. the purijying dues]?

جب ان پر جہاد کا حکم جاری کیا گیا تو ان میں سے کچھ لوگ انسانوں سے ایسے ڈرنے لگے جیسے خدا سے ڈرنا چاہیے، بلکہ اس سے بھی کہیں زیادہ، اور کہنے لگے: "اے ہمارے پروردگار! تو نے ہم پر جنگ کیوں فرض کر دی؟ کاش تو ہمیں تھوڑی سی اور مہلت دے دیتا!" کہہ دو: "دنیا کا فائدہ تھوڑا ہے، اور آخرت ان کے لیے بہتر ہے جو تقویٰ اختیار کرتے ہیں۔ اور تم پر دھاگے کے برابر بھی ظلم نہیں کیا جائے گا۔ تم جہاں کہیں بھی ہو موت تمہیں جا پکڑے گی، خواہ تم مضبوط اور بلند برجوں میں ہی کیوں نہ ہو۔" (النساء: 77-78)

When, at length, the order for fighting was issued to them, some of them stood in awe of men as one should stand in awe of God — or in even greater awe - and said, 'Our Lord! Why have you ordered us to fight? If only You had granted us a delay for a little while!* Say, 'Briefis the enjoyment of this world, whereas the life to come is the best for all who are God-fearing. None of you shall be wronged by as much as a hairs breadth. Wherever you may be death will overtake you, even though you be in towers built up strong and high. *n (4: 77-78)

قتادہ اور الضحاک کہتے ہیں کہ یہ آیت ان لوگوں کی سرزنش کرتی ہے جو اپنے کارناموں پر فخر کیا کرتے تھے، یہ دعویٰ کرتے ہوئے کہ انہوں نے دشمن سے جنگ کی اور اسے قتل کیا، حالانکہ انہوں نے ایسا نہیں کیا تھا۔

Qatadah and al-Dahhaq say that this verse reproaches those who used to boast about their exploits, claiming that they had fought and killed the enemy, when they had not done so.

ان آیات، ان کے سیاق و سباق اور قتال کے ذکر کو دیکھتے ہوئے ہماری رائے یہ ہے کہ ان کے نزول کا سبب وہی واقعہ تھا جسے اکثر علماء اور ابن جریر طبری نے بیان کیا ہے۔ تاہم، قرآنی متون ہمیشہ ان واقعات سے آگے بڑھ کر وسیع تر مفہوم رکھتے ہیں جن سے وہ براہِ راست متعلق ہوں۔ وہ اپنے نزول کے فوری سبب کے علاوہ بہت سے دوسرے واقعات پر بھی تبصرہ کرتے ہیں۔ لہٰذا ہم ان آیات کو ان کے عمومی مفہوم کے مطابق دیکھتے ہیں، اور ان واقعات کو بھی نظرانداز نہیں کرتے جن کے لیے یہ نازل ہوئیں۔

Looking at these verses, their context and the mention of fighting, we feel that the occasion inviting their revelation was the one mentioned by the majority of scholars and by Ibn Jarir al-Tabari. However, Quranic texts always take dimensions that go beyond the individual events which they address. They also comment on many other events in addition to the immediate occasion. Therefore, we look at these verses according to their general import, without forgetting the immediate events for which they were revealed.

سورت کا آغاز ایک ایسے رویے پر سرزنش سے ہوتا ہے جو ایک یا زیادہ حقیقی واقعات میں ظاہر ہوا تھا: "اے ایمان والو! تم وہ بات کیوں کہتے ہو جو کرتے نہیں؟" (آیت 2) پھر یہ اس عمل اور اس میں پائی جانے والی اخلاقی پستی کی دوہری شدت کے ساتھ مذمت کرتا ہے: "خدا کے نزدیک یہ بات بہت ناپسندیدہ ہے کہ تم وہ کہو جو کرتے نہیں!" (آیت 3) جو چیز خدا کے نزدیک سب سے زیادہ ناپسندیدہ ہو وہ یقیناً نہایت مکروہ اور گھناؤنی ہوگی۔ اس بیان کے بعد اہلِ ایمان کے لیے کافی ہے کہ وہ اسے بدترین نگاہ سے دیکھیں، خاص طور پر اس لیے کہ خدا انہیں ایسے لوگوں کے طور پر مخاطب کرتا ہے جنہوں نے اس کے دین کو قبول کیا ہے اور اس پر ایمان رکھتے ہیں۔

The surah starts then with a reproach for behaviour in one or more actual events: “Believers! Why do you say what you do not do?” (Verse 2) It then denounces this action and its lack of morality in a doubly powerful way: “Most loathsome is it in the sight of God that you say what you do not do!” (Verse 3) What is viewed by God as most loathsome must certainly be very hate fill and repugnant. This statement is sufficient then to make believers view this in the vilest of terms, particularly as they are addressed by God as people who have accepted His religion and who believe in Him.

اگلی آیت اُس خاص معاملے کی طرف اشارہ کرتی ہے جب انہوں نے وہ کام کیا جو وہ اقرار کرتے تھے، یعنی جہاد۔ یہ واضح کرتی ہے کہ اِس معاملے میں خدا کو کیا پسند ہے اور کیا چیز اُس کی رضا کا باعث بنتی ہے: "بے شک خدا اُن لوگوں سے محبت رکھتا ہے جو اُس کی راہ میں صف بستہ ہو کر لڑتے ہیں، گویا وہ ایک سیسہ پلائی ہوئی دیوار ہیں" (آیت 4)۔ یہ محض لڑائی نہیں، بلکہ خدا کی راہ میں لڑائی ہے، مسلم امت کے ساتھ مل کر، اُس کی صفوں کے اندر، اور عزم و استقامت کے ساتھ، تاکہ اہلِ ایمان "صف بستہ، گویا ایک مضبوط اور متحد عمارت" کی مانند قائم رہیں۔

The next verse refers to that particular matter when they did something different to what they used to profess, namely Jihad. It defines what God likes in this question and what earns His pleasure: “God loves indeed those who fight in His cause in solid ranks, as though they were a firm and compact building” (Verse 4) This is not mere fighting, but fighting for Gods cause, in collaboration with the Muslim community, within its ranks, and with resolve and steadfastness, so that believers remain “in solid ranks, as though they were a firm and compact building”

ہم کئی مواقع پر کہہ چکے ہیں کہ قرآن جس وقت نازل ہو رہا تھا، اس وقت وہ ایک قوم سازی کے عمل کو آگے بڑھا رہا تھا۔ اس کا مقصد ایک ایسی امت تیار کرنا تھا جو الٰہی پیغام کی امانت اٹھائے، اس کے طریقے کو عملی جامہ پہنائے اور انسانی زندگی میں اس کا نظام قائم کرے۔ اس مقصد کے لیے ضروری تھا کہ قرآن افراد کی اصلاح کا کام بھی کرے، امت کے طور پر ان کے رشتوں کو بھی استوار کرے، اور انہیں عملی طور پر ایک زندہ قوم کی صورت میں ڈھالے۔ یہ سارا کام ایک ہی وقت میں انجام پانا تھا۔ مسلمان اس وقت تک مسلمان نہیں ہوتا جب تک وہ ایک امت کے اندر رہ کر کام نہ کرے۔ اسلام کا عملی نفاذ اس کے بغیر ناقابلِ تصور ہے کہ وہ ایک ایسی امت میں کام نہ کرے جس کے رشتے، نظام اور مقصد متعین ہوں۔ اس کا حتمی مقصد پوری امت پر منطبق ہوتا ہے، مگر ساتھ ہی یہ ہر فرد پر بھی لاگو ہوتا ہے۔ یہ مقصد لوگوں کے ضمیروں اور عملی زندگی میں زمین پر الٰہی نظام کو قائم کرنے پر مشتمل ہے۔ اور اس مقصد کے حصول کے لیے ضروری ہے کہ اسلام ایک حقیقی امت میں زندہ رہے جو اسے مکمل طور پر نافذ کرے۔

We have said on several occasions that as it was being revealed, the Qur’an was carrying on with a process of nation building. Its aim was to build a community that carried the trust of the divine message, implemented its approach and established its system in human life. It was necessary for this purpose that the Qur’an should undertake the reform of its individuals, establish its bonds as a community, and build it as a living nation in practice. All of this was to be accomplished at the same time. A Muslim is not a Muslim unless he functions within a community. It is inconceivable for Islam to be put into practice unless it functions in a community with well-defined bonds, a system and goal. Its ultimate goal applies to the community as a whole, but it also applies at the same time to each individual. This goal consists of establishing the divine system in people’s consciences and practices on earth. To achieve the latter, Islam must live in an actual community that implements it fully.

اسلام فرد کے ضمیر اور اس کی ذمہ داری پر بہت زور دیتا ہے، لیکن یہ یقینی طور پر ایسے افراد کا دین نہیں جو اپنے اپنے چھوٹے گوشوں میں عبادت کے لیے وقف ہو جائیں۔ محض اتنا کافی نہیں کہ اسلام فرد کے اپنے ضمیر میں قائم ہو، چہ جائیکہ اس کی پوری زندگی میں۔ اسلام اس طرح کی تنہائی میں نازل نہیں ہوا۔ بلکہ وہ اس لیے نازل ہوا کہ انسانی زندگی میں اپنے معیارات اور اصول قائم کرے۔ اس کا مقصد ہر فرد اور ہر اجتماعی سرگرمی پر، ہر سمت میں، اپنا نقش ثبت کرنا ہے۔

Islam places much emphasis on the individual’s conscience and responsibility, but it is certainly not a religion of individuals who dedicate themselves to worship in their respective little corners. This does not establish Islam within the individual’s own conscience, let alone in his whole life. Islam was not revealed in such isolation. Rather, it was revealed to establish its criteria and standards in human life. It aims to put its mark on every individual and collective activity in every direction.

انسان فرد کی صورت میں نہیں بلکہ گروہوں، معاشروں اور قوموں کی صورت میں زندگی گزارتا ہے۔ اور اسلام چاہتا ہے کہ لوگوں کو اُن کی زندگی گزارنے کے دوران اپنے ضوابط فراہم کرے۔ اسی لیے اسلام کو ایسی ساخت دی گئی ہے کہ وہ لوگوں کی زندگی کی ضروریات کو پورا کرے۔ اس کے اخلاق، آداب، احکام اور نظام سب اسی بنیاد پر وضع کیے گئے ہیں۔ جب اسلام فرد کے ضمیر کی طرف توجہ کرتا ہے تو اس ضمیر کی تشکیل اس بنیاد پر کرتا ہے کہ فرد ایک معاشرے میں رہتا ہے۔ فرد بھی اور معاشرہ بھی خدا کی طرف رجوع کرتے ہیں اور اس کی رضا کے طالب ہوتے ہیں۔ اس لیے ایک مسلمان زمین پر دینی امانت کو ادا کرنے اور زندگی میں اسلامی نظام قائم کرنے کے لیے اپنے معاشرے کے اندر رہ کر کام کرتا ہے۔

Mankind do not live as individuals, but as groups, communities and nations. And Islam wants to provide people with its controls as they conduct their lives. Hence, it is so structured as to cater for people as they live. Its morality, manners, rules and systems are all formulated on this basis. When Islam directs its attention to the conscience of the individual, it moulds this conscience on the basis that the individual lives in a community. Both the individual and the community turn to God and seek His pleasure. Therefore, a Muslim works within his community to fulfil the religious trust on earth and to establish the Islamic system in life.

اسلامی دعوت کے پہلے ہی دن سے نبی ﷺ کی قیادت میں ایک مسلم جماعت قائم ہو گئی تھی۔ اس کے افراد کی اپنی جماعت کے ساتھ کچھ ذمہ داریاں تھیں، اور اس جماعت کی ایک خاص شناخت تھی جو اسے دوسری تمام جماعتوں سے ممتاز کرتی تھی۔ اس کی کچھ اقدار تھیں جو انسانی ضمیر سے متعلق تھیں، مگر ساتھ ہی ان کی نظر جماعت کی زندگی اور بہبود پر بھی تھی۔ یہ سب کچھ اس وقت ہوا جب مدینہ میں اسلامی ریاست قائم نہیں ہوئی تھی۔ درحقیقت اسی جماعت کی تشکیل وہ ذریعہ بنی جس سے بعد میں اسلامی ریاست قائم ہوئی۔ ﷺ

Right from the very first day of the Islamic message, a Muslim community was established under the leadership of the Prophet (peace be upon him). Its individuals had their commitments towards their community, which also had its special entity distinguishing it from all other communities. It had its values that related to the human conscience but which looked at the same time to the life and welfare of the community. All this took place before the Islamic state was established in Madinah. Indeed, the formation of this community was the means by which the Islamic state was later established.

جب ہم ان تین آیات پر غور کرتے ہیں تو معلوم ہوتا ہے کہ فرد کا اخلاق اجتماع کی ضروریات کے ساتھ گندھا ہوا ہے، اور یہ سب کچھ دینی ایمان کے اختیار کے تحت ہے۔ اپنی فطرت کے اعتبار سے یہ ایمان انسانی زندگی میں مکمل طور پر اسی صورت میں کارگر ہو سکتا ہے کہ وہ ایک ایسے نظام کی شکل میں ہو جس کی مناسب طور پر خدمت اور حفاظت کی جائے۔

When we look at these three verses we find that the morality of the individual is intertwined with the needs of the community, under the authority of religious faith. By its very nature, this faith can function fully in human life only in the form of a system that is properly served and protected.

پہلی دو آیات میں، جن میں سے تیسری آیت زیرِ بحث ہے، اللہ کی سزا اور اُس سخت تنبیہ کا ذکر ہے جو اُن اہلِ ایمان کے لیے ہے جو ایسی بات کہیں جس کی تصدیق اُن کے اعمال نہ کریں۔ اس طرح یہ دونوں آیات ایک مسلمان کی شخصیت میں سچائی اور قول و فعل کی ہم آہنگی جیسی نہایت اہم صفات کو واضح کرتی ہیں۔

The first two of the three verses under discussion refer to Gods punishment and a strong censure if believers say something that is belied by their deeds. Thus, these two verses delineate the hugely important qualities of truthfulness and consistency in a Muslims personality.

ایک مسلمان کو اپنے باطن اور اپنے ظاہر دونوں میں ایک ہی تصویر پیش کرنی چاہیے۔ اس کے اعمال اس کے اقوال کے مطابق ہونے چاہئیں۔ یہ بات ہر حال میں لاگو ہوتی ہے اور اس سے کہیں آگے تک جاتی ہے جس جہاد کی طرف تیسری آیت اشارہ کرتی ہے۔

A Muslim must reflect the same image in his inner self and in his appearance. His actions must be consistent with his words. This applies in all situations and goes far beyond the call to Jihad to which the third verse refers.

قرآن اس اسلامی خصوصیت پر بہت زور دیتا ہے، اور سنت میں بھی اس پر بار بار تاکید کی گئی ہے۔ یہودیوں کی مذمت کرتے ہوئے خدا فرماتا ہے: "کیا تم دوسروں کو نیکی کا حکم دیتے ہو اور اپنے آپ کو بھول جاتے ہو، حالانکہ تم کتاب کی تلاوت کرتے ہو؟ کیا تم عقل نہیں رکھتے؟" (2: 44) "وہ کہتے ہیں: ہم آپ کی اطاعت کرتے ہیں، لیکن جب وہ آپ کے پاس سے چلے جاتے ہیں تو ان میں سے کچھ لوگ چھپ کر کچھ ایسی باتیں گھڑتے ہیں جو آپ کی تعلیم کے خلاف ہوتی ہیں۔" (4:81) "کچھ لوگ ایسے ہیں جو اپنی باتوں سے دنیاوی زندگی میں تمہیں بہت بھلے لگتے ہیں، اور وہ اپنے دل کی بات پر خدا کو گواہ بناتے ہیں، حالانکہ وہ سب سے زیادہ سخت مخالف ہوتے ہیں۔"

The Qur’an places great emphasis on this Islamic characteristic, which is also repeatedly emphasized in the sunnah. Denouncing the Jews, God says: “ How can you bid others to piety and forget yourselves even while you are reciting the Book? Do you not understand?' (2: 44) “ They say: 'We do obey you? but when they leave you, some of them devise, in secret, something different from what you advocate." (4:81) "There is a kind of man who pleases you greatly in the present life by what he says, and he cites God as witness to what is in his heart, whereas he is the most antagonistic of adversaries.

Yet, no sooner does he turn away than he strives to spread corruption in the world, destroying crops and progeny. God does not love corruption.” (2:

204-205) نبی ﷺ فرماتے ہیں: "منافق کی تین علامات ہیں: جب بات کرے تو جھوٹ بولے، وعدہ کرے تو اس کی خلاف ورزی کرے، اور امانت دی جائے تو خیانت کرے۔" [اسے البخاری، مسلم، التِّرمِذی اور النَّسائی نے روایت کیا ہے] اسی مفہوم کی بے شمار احادیث موجود ہیں۔ شاید وہ حدیث جو ہم اب نقل کرنے جا رہے ہیں، اس اخلاقی پہلو کو دہرانے کے لیے نبی ﷺ کی سب سے باریک اور نفیس ہدایات میں سے ایک کو شامل کرتی ہے۔ امام احمد اور ابوداؤد نے عبداللہ بن عامر بن ربیعہ سے یہ روایت نقل کی ہے: "جب میں چھوٹا لڑکا تھا تو رسول اللہ ﷺ ہمارے ہاں تشریف لائے۔ میں باہر کھیلنے جانا چاہتا تھا، تو میری والدہ نے مجھ سے کہا: 'عبداللہ! آؤ، میں تمہیں کچھ دوں گی۔' نبی ﷺ نے اُن سے پوچھا: 'تم اسے کیا دینا چاہتی ہو؟' انہوں نے جواب دیا: 'کھجوریں۔' آپ ﷺ نے فرمایا: 'اگر تم اسے کچھ نہ دیتیں تو تمہارے نامۂ اعمال میں جھوٹ لکھ دیا جاتا۔'" شاید امام احمد اسی حدیث سے رہنمائی لیتے ہوئے ایک طویل سفر طے کر کے اُس شخص سے ملنے گئے جس سے وہ ایک اور حدیث کے بارے میں پوچھنا چاہتے تھے۔ مگر جب وہ اس شخص کے ہاں پہنچے تو دیکھا کہ وہ اپنی چادر اس انداز سے اٹھا رہا ہے جس سے اس کے خچر کو یہ گمان ہو کہ اس میں کھانا ہے، حالانکہ چادر میں کچھ بھی نہیں تھا۔ اس پر امام احمد نے محسوس کیا کہ محض اس لیے کہ اس شخص نے اپنے خچر سے جھوٹ بولا تھا، انہیں اس سے منقول حدیث روایت نہیں کرنی چاہیے۔

204-205) The Prophet says: “The three distinctive marks of a hypocrite are: he lies when he speaks, and breaks his promises, and he is untrue to his trust.” [Related by al-Bukhari, Muslim, al-Tirmidhi and al-Nasa’L] There are numerous ahadlth that emphasize the same concept. Perhaps the hadith we will quote now includes one of the most subtle and refined directives by the Prophet to reiterate this moral aspect of Islam. Imam Ahmad and Abu Dawud relate this report by 'Abdullah ibn 'Amir ibn Rabi'ah: “Gods Messenger came to us when I was a young boy. I wanted to go out to play, but my mother said to me, ‘ 'Abdullah, come and I will give you something.’ The Prophet said to her, ‘What do you want to give him?’ She replied, ‘Dates.’ He said, ‘If you would not give him anything, it would have been recorded against you as a lie’.” Perhaps Imam Ahmad was guided by this hadith when he travelled a long distance to meet someone whom he wanted to ask about another hadith. However, when he arrived at the man’s place, he saw him raising his robe in a way that suggested to his mule that it contained food, but there was nothing in the robe. Imam Ahmad then felt that he should not report the hadith reported by this man simply because he had lied to his mule.

ایک مسلمان کے ضمیر کی ایسی باریک اخلاقی معیار پر پرورش کی جاتی ہے کہ وہ ایسا کردار تعمیر کر سکے جس پر انسانی زندگی میں الٰہی نظام کے قیام کی ذمہ داری سونپی جا سکے۔ یہی کچھ ہم اس سورت میں دیکھتے ہیں، جو مسلم امت کی تعلیم اور اس کی عظیم امانت کو اٹھانے کے لیے تیاری کا ایک اہم پہلو فراہم کرتی ہے۔

A Muslim’s conscience is reared to such a fine moral standard so as to build the character that can be entrusted with the establishment of the divine system in human life. This is what we see in this surah, which provides an important aspect of education for the Muslim community and its preparation to shoulder its great trust.

ہم اب جہاد کے اس مسئلے پر غور کرتے ہیں جس سے یہ آیات اپنے نزول کے وقت متعلق تھیں۔ یہاں ہمیں کئی ایسے نکات ملتے ہیں جن کی قدر و تفہیم ضروری ہے۔

Let us now consider the issue of Jihad which these verses addressed at the time of their revelation. We find here several points that need to be appreciated.

سب سے پہلے ہم دیکھتے ہیں کہ انسان کمزوری کے لمحات سے گزر سکتا ہے، اور ایسے وقت میں اسے ان کمزوریوں کا مقابلہ کرنے کے لیے خدا کی مدد کی ضرورت ہوتی ہے۔

We see firstly that human beings may experience moments of weakness and this is when they need God’s help to combat such shortcomings.

انہیں مسلسل یاد دہانی اور باقاعدہ تعلیم کی ضرورت ہے۔ ان آیات میں مسلمانوں کے ایک گروہ کا ذکر ہے جو بعض روایات کے مطابق مہاجرین میں سے تھے، یعنی وہ ابتدائی مسلمان جو نبی ﷺ کے ساتھ مکہ سے مدینہ ہجرت کر گئے۔ مکہ میں قیام کے دوران وہ پورے جوش کے ساتھ یہ خواہش رکھتے تھے کہ خدا انہیں لڑنے کی اجازت دے، مگر انہیں حکم دیا گیا کہ اپنے ہاتھ روکے رکھیں اور اس کے بجائے نماز قائم کرنے اور اپنے عبادت کے فرائض ادا کرنے میں لگے رہیں۔ تاہم جب بعد میں مدینہ میں انہیں لڑنے کا حکم دیا گیا، اس وقت جو مناسب سمجھا گیا، تو ان کا رویہ مختلف ہو گیا: ”کیا تم نے ان لوگوں کو نہیں دیکھا جنہیں کہا گیا تھا کہ اپنے ہاتھ روکے رکھو [لڑائی سے]، نماز قائم کرو اور زکوٰۃ ادا کرو [یعنی وہ مالی حقوق جو پاک کرنے والے ہیں]؟ پھر جب ان پر جنگ کا حکم نازل ہوا تو ان میں سے کچھ لوگ انسانوں سے اس طرح ڈرنے لگے جس طرح خدا سے ڈرنا چاہیے، بلکہ اس سے بھی زیادہ ڈرنے لگے، اور کہنے لگے: ’اے ہمارے رب! تو نے ہم پر جنگ کیوں فرض کر دی؟ کاش تو ہمیں ابھی کچھ مدت اور مہلت دے دیتا!‘“ (4: 77) دوسری روایات سے معلوم ہوتا ہے کہ یہ مدینہ کے مسلمانوں کا ایک گروہ تھا جس نے پوچھا کہ خدا کو سب سے زیادہ پسند کون سا عمل ہے تاکہ وہ اسے انجام دے سکیں۔ لیکن جب انہیں خدا کی راہ میں جہاد کا حکم دیا گیا تو وہ اسے ناپسند کرنے لگے۔

They need repeated reminders and regular education. These verses refer to a group of Muslims who, according to some reports, belonged to the Muhajirin, the early Muslims who migrated with the Prophet from Makkah to Madinah. Whilst in Makkah, they wished, in all enthusiasm, that God would allow them to fight, but they were told to hold back and attend to their worship duties instead. However, when later in Madinah they were told to fight, at the time that was considered appropriate, they held a different attitude: "Are you not aware of those who have been told, 'Hold back your hands [from fighting], and attend regularly to prayer, and pay your zakat [i.e. the purifying dues]? When, at length, the order for fighting was issued to them, some of them stood in awe of men as one should stand in awe of God - or in even greater awe - and said, 'Our Lord! Why have you ordered us to fight! If only You had granted us a delay for a little while!”' (4: 77) Other reports suggest that they were a group of the Madinan Muslims who asked about the action God loves most so that they could perform it. However, when they were ordered to fight for God’s cause, they disliked this.

جب ہم اس پر غور کرتے ہیں تو ہمیں احساس ہوتا ہے کہ انسانی نفس کو مشکل کاموں اور ذمہ داریوں کا سامنا کرتے ہوئے مسلسل اور بار بار حوصلہ افزائی، رہنمائی اور تقویت کی ضرورت ہوتی ہے۔ ایسی بار بار کی حوصلہ افزائی ہی سے انسانی نفس اپنے راستے پر قائم رہ سکتا ہے، اپنی کمزوریوں پر قابو پا سکتا ہے اور بلند مقاصد پر نظر جمائے رکھ سکتا ہے۔ مزید یہ کہ ہمیں یہ بھی احساس ہوتا ہے کہ جب ہم نہ کسی دباؤ کا سامنا کر رہے ہوں اور نہ کسی مشکل میں ہوں تو ہمیں بڑے مقاصد عطا کیے جانے کا سوال نہیں کرنا چاہیے، کیونکہ ہو سکتا ہے کہ جو کچھ ہم خدا سے مانگیں کہ وہ ہمارے ذمے لگائے، ہم اسے پورا نہ کر سکیں۔ یہاں ہم دیکھتے ہیں کہ کچھ ابتدائی مسلمان اس قدر کمزور پڑ گئے کہ وہ ایک بات کہتے اور عمل کچھ اور کرتے تھے۔ اسی لیے وہ خدا کی طرف سے سخت سرزنش کے مستحق ٹھہرے۔

As we reflect on this, we realize that regular and repeated encouragement, directives and strengthening are all necessary for the human soul as it faces difficult tasks and responsibilities. Only with such repeated encouragement can the human soul maintain its path and overcome its weaknesses, setting its sight on higher objectives. Moreover, we realize that we must not ask to be given great goals when we face neither pressure nor difficulty. This because we may not be able to fulfil what we ask God to assign to us. Here, we see some early Muslims weakening to the extent that they say one thing and do another. Hence they faced this strong reproach from God.

دوسری بات یہ ہے کہ ہمیں اس آیت کے الفاظ پر غور کرنا چاہیے جو اس بات کا ذکر کرتی ہے کہ خدا ان لوگوں سے محبت کرتا ہے جو اُس کی راہ میں صف بستہ ہو کر لڑتے ہیں، گویا وہ ایک مضبوط اور متحد عمارت ہوں۔ یہ اُس راہ میں لڑنے کی ایک گہری ترغیب ہے۔ یہ بات ابتدا میں ایک ایسے معاملے سے نمٹنے کے لیے کہی گئی تھی جہاں جہاد سے پیچھے ہٹنے اور رُوگردانی کا رجحان تھا، لیکن اس فوری سبب سے یہ حقیقت نہیں بدلتی کہ یہ ترغیب ہر زمانے اور ہر قوم کے لیے ہے۔ لہٰذا اس کے پیچھے ایک واضح اور مستقل مقصد کارفرما ہے۔

Secondly, we need to reflect on the phraseology of the verse that speaks of God’s love for those who fight for His cause in closed ranks, as though they were a firm and compact building. This represents profound encouragement to fight for God’s cause. This statement was first made to deal with a case of reluctance and turning away from fighting, but this immediate cause does not change the fact that the encouragement is meant for all times and all peoples. Hence, there is a definite and constant purpose behind it.

اسلام نہ جنگ کو پسند کرتا ہے اور نہ اس کی ترغیب دیتا ہے، لیکن زندگی کے تقاضوں کی بنا پر اس نے مسلمانوں پر اسے فرض کر دیا ہے، اور اس لیے کہ اس کے پیچھے کارفرما مقصد نہایت اہم ہے۔ اسلام انسانیت کے سامنے الہی نظام کی آخری صورت پیش کرتا ہے۔ اگرچہ یہ نظام سیدھی فطرت کے تمام تقاضوں کو پورا کرتا ہے، پھر بھی یہ مطالبہ کرتا ہے کہ لوگ اس کے معیار تک بلند ہونے اور اسے قائم رکھنے کے لیے محنت کریں۔ دوسری طرف زمین پر بہت سی ایسی قوتیں موجود ہیں جو اس نظام کو ناپسند کرتی ہیں اور اسے کمزور کرنے کی کوشش کرتی ہیں، کیونکہ یہ نظام ان قوتوں کو ان بہت سی مراعات سے محروم کر دیتا ہے جو ان باطل اقدار پر قائم ہیں جنہیں اسلام غلط سمجھتا ہے اور جنہیں انسانی زندگی سے مٹانا چاہتا ہے۔ یہ بری قوتیں لوگوں کی کمزوریوں سے فائدہ اٹھانے کی کوشش کرتی ہیں، اور اس بلند معیار تک پہنچنے کے بعد جب لوگ سستی کا شکار ہو جائیں تو انہیں اپنے مقصد کے لیے استعمال کرتی ہیں جس تک اسلام انہیں بلند کرتا ہے۔

Islam neither likes nor encourages fighting, but it makes it a duty on Muslims because life necessitates it, and because the purpose behind it is very important. Islam presents the final version of the divine system to humanity. Although this system meets all the needs of an upright human nature, it requires that people exert themselves to rise to its standard and maintain it. On the other hand, there are numerous forces on earth that dislike this system and try to undermine it, because it deprives those forces of many privileges that are based on values Islam considers false and which it aims to eradicate from human life. These evil forces try to exploit peoples weaknesses and their slackening after they have attained the high standard to which Islam elevates them.

وہ لوگوں کی جہالت اور موروثی رسوم و اقدار سے بھی فائدہ اٹھاتے ہیں تاکہ اسلام کی مخالفت کریں اور اس کے نظام کے قیام کو روکیں۔ باطل بڑی بڑی قوتیں جمع کر سکتا ہے، اور جھوٹ کو اپنی طاقت پر فخر کرنے کی عادت ہوتی ہے؛ بے شک شیطان بڑا سرکش اور مکار ہے۔ اس لیے وہ اہلِ ایمان جو اسلامی نظام کے قیام اور اس کی حفاظت کی کوشش کرتے ہیں، ان پر لازم ہے کہ وہ مضبوط ہوں تاکہ بدی کے کارندوں اور شیطان کے حامیوں پر غالب آ سکیں۔ انہیں اپنی اخلاقی اقدار میں مضبوط ہونا چاہیے، اور بدی کے خلاف اپنی جدوجہد میں سخت گیر ہونا چاہیے۔ جب یہی ایک راستہ ہو جو اسلامی نظام کو فروغ دینے والی آزادیِ عمل، اور اس پر ایمان رکھنے اور انسانی زندگی میں اسے نافذ کرنے کی آزادی کی ضمانت دے، تو انہیں جنگ و قتال کا سہارا لینا چاہیے۔

They also exploit peoples ignorance and inherited values to oppose Islam and prevent the establishment of its system. Evil can muster great forces and falsehood is wont to boast of its power; Satan is indeed wicked and cunning. Hence, the advocates of faith who try to establish the Islamic system and protect it must be strong in order to overcome the agents of evil and Satan’s supporters. They must be strong in their moral values, and tough in their fighting against evil. They must resort to combat when it is the only way to guarantee the freedom of action that promotes the Islamic system, and the freedom to believe in it and implement it in human life.

وہ خدا کی راہ میں لڑتے ہیں، اپنی ذاتی شان یا نسل، قومیت، قبیلے یا برادری کے کسی رشتے کے لیے نہیں۔ ان کی لڑائی کا مقصد یہ ہے کہ خدا کا کلمہ بلند ہو، کیونکہ نبی ﷺ نے فرمایا: "جو شخص اس لیے لڑے کہ خدا کا کلمہ سب سے بلند ہو، وہی خدا کی راہ میں لڑنے والا ہے۔" [اسے البخاری اور مسلم نے روایت کیا ہے۔] اس سیاق میں "خدا کا کلمہ" اس کی مشیت کا اظہار ہے۔ ہم انسانوں کو خدا کی مشیت میں سے جو چیز دکھائی دیتی ہے، وہ وہ ہے جو اس نظام کے مطابق ہو جو کائنات کو چلاتا ہے، اور جو اپنی مجموعی صورت میں خدا کی تسبیح و تحمید کرتا ہے۔ خدا کے دین کی آخری صورت، اسلام، وہ ہے جو کائناتی نظام کے ساتھ کامل طور پر ہم آہنگ ہے۔ یہ پوری کائنات، بشمول انسانوں کے، کو خدا کے قانون پر عمل پیرا کرتا ہے، اور اس کے سوا تمام قوانین کو خارج کر دیتا ہے۔

They fight for God’s cause, not for their own glory or for any bonds of race, nationality, tribe or clan. The aim of their fight is that God’s word reigns supreme, for the Prophet says: “Whoever fights to make God’s word supreme fights for God’s cause.” [Related by al-Bukhari and Muslim.] God’s word in this context is an expression of His will. What appears to us human beings, of God’s will is that which conforms to the system that operates the universe, which in its entirety glorifies God and praises Him. The final version of Gods divine faith, Islam, is the one that fits perfectly with the universal system. It makes the whole universe, including human beings, implement God’s law, to the exclusion of all other laws.

یہ ناگزیر تھا کہ اس دین کی مخالفت افراد، طبقات اور ریاستوں کی طرف سے ہو۔ یہ بھی ناگزیر تھا کہ ایسی مخالفت کے باوجود اسلام اپنی راہ پر آگے بڑھتا رہے۔ لہٰذا ضروری ہوا کہ اس دین کی حمایت میں اور خدا کے کلمے کو زمین پر سربلند کرنے کے لیے مسلمانوں پر جہاد فرض ہو۔ اسی لیے خدا ان لوگوں سے محبت کرتا ہے جو مکمل یکجہتی اور متزلزل نہ ہونے والی لگن کے ساتھ اس کی راہ میں لڑتے ہیں۔

It was inevitable that this faith should be opposed by individuals, classes and states. It was also inevitable that Islam should proceed along its way despite such opposition. Hence, it was necessary that Jihad should become obligatory on Muslims in support of this faith and for the purpose of making God’s word supreme on earth. Hence, God loves those who fight for His cause with complete unity of hearts and unwavering dedication.

آخر میں، ہمیں اس حالت پر کچھ غور کرنا چاہیے جس میں مجاہدین کو اللہ کی راہ میں جہاد کرتے وقت ہونا چاہیے۔ انہیں "صف بستہ ہو کر، گویا وہ ایک سیسہ پلائی ہوئی دیوار ہوں" (آیت 4) ہونا چاہیے۔ یہ ایک فرد کی ذمہ داری ہے جو اجتماعی صورت میں ادا کی جاتی ہے، یعنی

Finally, we need to reflect a little on the description of the state fighters should be in when they undertake Jihad for Gods cause. They should be “in solid ranks, as though they were a firm and compact building.” (Verse 4) This is an individual s obligation discharged in a collective form, i.e.

ان لوگوں کے مقابلے میں جو اسلام کے خلاف ہیں، کیونکہ وہ اپنی قوتیں جمع کرتے ہیں اور اس کے خلاف بڑے بڑے اتحاد کھڑے کرنے کی کوشش کرتے ہیں، ایک واضح نظام رکھنے والی جماعت میں ہی ہونا ضروری ہے۔ اسی لیے اسلام کے سپاہیوں کو اپنے دشمنوں کا سامنا مضبوط اور سیدھی صفوں میں کھڑے ہو کر کرنا چاہیے۔ اسلامی عقیدے کی فطرت یہ ہے کہ جب یہ غالب آتا ہے تو ایک مضبوط جماعت قائم کرنے کی طرف بڑھتا ہے۔ اس لیے وہ تصور جس میں ایک مومن اکیلا خدا کی عبادت کرتا ہے، جدوجہد کرتا ہے اور تنہا زندگی گزارتا ہے، اس عقیدے اور اس کے فرائض کی فطرت سے بہت دور ہے۔ یہ بات جہاد اور لڑائی کے وقت بھی درست ہے، اور اس وقت بھی جب فتح حاصل ہو چکی ہو اور اسلامی جماعت قائم ہو چکی ہو۔

in a community with a clear system. This is because those who stand against Islam marshal their forces and try to raise great coalitions against it. Hence, the soldiers of Islam must face its enemies standing in solid and straight ranks. It is in the nature of the Islamic faith that when it triumphs it moves to establish a solid community. Hence, the image of an individual believer, worshipping God on his own, striving and living alone is far removed from the nature of this faith and its duties. This is true both at the time of Jihad and fighting, and at a time when victory has been secured and the Islamic community established.

یہ حالت، جسے خدا مومنوں کے لیے پسند فرماتا ہے، ان کے ایمان کی نوعیت کو بیان کرتی ہے اور ان کے لیے اُس راستے کی علامات واضح کرتی ہے جس پر وہ چلتے ہیں۔ یہ ان کے درمیان قریبی تعاون کی نوعیت کو ظاہر کرتی ہے، جیسا کہ قرآن کی اس تخلیقی تمثیل میں پیش کیا گیا ہے: مضبوط اور باہم جڑی ہوئی صفیں، گویا کوئی ٹھوس اور مستحکم عمارت ہو۔ یہ ایسی عمارت ہے جس کی ہر اینٹ اپنی جگہ پر مضبوطی سے جمی ہوئی ہے اور اپنا مخصوص کردار ادا کر رہی ہے۔ اگر اس کی کوئی ایک اینٹ اپنی جگہ سے ہٹ جائے، خواہ آگے کی طرف ہو یا پیچھے کی طرف، تاکہ وہ اوپر یا نیچے کی قطار میں یا اپنے دائیں بائیں کی اینٹوں کے ساتھ مضبوطی سے نہ جڑے، تو پوری عمارت گر سکتی ہے۔ یہ محض ایک تشبیہ نہیں بلکہ ایک حقیقت کا اظہار ہے۔ یہ ہمارے سامنے امتِ مسلمہ کی نوعیت، اس امت کے افراد کے باہمی تعلقات، ان کے جذبات، اور نظامِ مجموعی کے اندر اور ایک متعین مقصد کی طرف ان کے متحدہ عمل کو نمایاں کرتی ہے۔

This condition, which God loves for believers, portrays the nature of their faith and explains for them the landmarks on their way. It illustrates the nature of the close cooperation between them as portrayed by this creative Quranic image: solid ranks like a firm and compact building. It is a building in which every brick is firmly placed in position, fulfilling its specific function. The whole edifice may collapse if one of its bricks moves out of place, whether forward or backward, so as not to firmly link with the one next to it in the higher or lower row or on either of its two sides. This is an expression that shows the reality, not merely gives a simile. It raises before us the nature of the Muslim community, the relations between individuals in this community, their feelings and united action within the overall system and towards a well-defined goal.

یہ سورت اس الٰہی نظام کی تاریخ اور ان مراحل کے بارے میں بات کرتی ہے جن سے وہ اسلام سے پہلے نازل ہونے والے پیغامات کے ساتھ گزرا۔

The surah moves on to speak about the history of this divine system and the stages it went through with the messages revealed before Islam:

اور جب موسیٰ نے اپنی قوم سے کہا: اے میری قوم! تم مجھے کیوں اذیت دیتے ہو، حالانکہ تم جانتے ہو کہ میں خدا کا رسول ہوں جو تمہاری طرف بھیجا گیا ہے؟ پس جب وہ حق سے منحرف ہو گئے تو خدا نے ان کے دلوں کو بھی پھیر دیا۔ خدا نافرمان قوم کو ہدایت نہیں دیتا۔ اور عیسیٰ ابنِ مریم نے بھی کہا: اے بنی اسرائیل! میں خدا کا رسول ہوں تمہاری طرف، اس تورات کی تصدیق کرنے والا جو مجھ سے پہلے نازل ہوئی، اور ایک ایسے رسول کی خوشخبری دینے والا جو میرے بعد آئے گا، جس کا نام احمد ہوگا۔ (آیات 5-6)

Now when Moses spoke to his people, he said: My people! Why do you cause me grief, when you know that I am a messenger God has sent to you?' So, when they swerved from the right way, God let their hearts swerve from the truth. God does not bestow His guidance upon evildoers. And also Jesus, the son of Mary, said: ‘Children of Israel! I am God's messenger to you, [sent] to confirm the Torah revealed before me, and to give news of a Messenger that will come after me, whose name shall be Ahmad.' (Verses 5-6)

موسیٰ وہ شخص تھے جنہوں نے بنی اسرائیل کو فرعون اور اس کے ظلم سے نجات دلائی۔ وہ ان کی طرف خدا کے رسول، ان کے رہنما اور معلّم تھے۔ اس کے باوجود وہ غم جو انہوں نے انہیں پہنچایا، طویل مدت تک جاری رہنے والا تھا اور اس نے بہت سے رنگ اور صورتیں اختیار کیں۔ انہیں راہِ راست پر لانے کی ان کی جدوجہد مشکل، تھکا دینے والی اور آزمائشوں سے بھرپور تھی۔ قرآن مجید میں موسیٰ اور ان کی قوم کے جو واقعات بیان ہوئے ہیں، ان میں ہم اس غم کے مختلف پہلوؤں کے بارے میں پڑھتے ہیں جو انہیں ان کی قوم کی طرف سے پہنچا، اور اس بات کے بھی کہ ان کے عقیدے کی اصلاح کے لیے انہیں کتنی سخت جدوجہد کرنی پڑی۔

Moses was the one who saved the Children of Israel from Pharaoh and his tyranny. He was God’s messenger to them, their leader and teacher. Yet the grief that they caused him was of the extended type, taking many colours and forms. His struggle to put them on the right course was hard, tiring and trying. In the accounts the Qur’an gives of Moses and his people we read about the different aspects of the grief they caused him and how hard he had to struggle to reform their belief system.

مثال کے طور پر، انہوں نے فرعون کو آزاد کرنے پر آمادہ کرنے کی موسیٰ کی کوششوں کی حوصلہ شکنی کی۔ چنانچہ جب وہ فرعون کے غضب کا سامنا کر رہے تھے، تو وہ خود اپنی تقدیر اور ذلت کو قبول کر کے محفوظ رہے۔ انہوں نے موسیٰ کو ان کی حالت مزید خراب کرنے کا ذمہ دار بھی ٹھہرایا: "تمہارے ہمارے پاس آنے سے پہلے بھی ہمیں ستایا گیا، اور تمہارے آنے کے بعد بھی۔" {الأعراف: 129}۔ اس سے یہ مراد ہے کہ انہیں اس پیغام کے نتیجے میں کوئی خاص بھلائی نظر نہیں آ رہی تھی، یا وہ اس تازہ ظلم و ستم کا ذمہ دار اسی کو ٹھہرا رہے تھے۔

For example, they discouraged Moses’ efforts to persuade Pharaoh to let them go free. So whilst he exposed himself to Pharaoh’s wrath, they were safe having accepted their lot and humiliation. They even blamed Moses for worsening their plight: “ We have been oppressed before you came to us, and since you have come to us." (7: 129) The suggestion being that they did not see much good coming their way as a result of his message, or that they blamed him for this latest round of oppression.

جب موسیٰ، خدا کی رہنمائی سے، انہیں فرعون کی ذلت سے نجات دلا چکے تھے — خدا نے فرعون اور اس کی قوم کو ان کی آنکھوں کے سامنے غرق کر دیا تھا — تو وہ ایسی عبادت کی طرف مائل ہو گئے جو فرعون کی قوم کی عبادت سے مشابہ تھی: ہم نے بنی اسرائیل کو سمندر کے پار اتار دیا، پھر وہ ایسے لوگوں کے پاس پہنچے جو اپنے کچھ بتوں کی عبادت میں مصروف تھے۔ بنی اسرائیل نے کہا: "اے موسیٰ، ہمارے لیے بھی ایک معبود بنا دیجیے جیسے ان کے معبود ہیں۔" (7: 138) پھر یوں ہوا کہ موسیٰ ﷺ کو تختیاں لینے کے لیے اپنے رب سے ملاقات کی غرض سے گئے ہوئے ابھی زیادہ دیر نہ ہوئی تھی کہ سامری نے انہیں گمراہ کر دیا، جب اس نے ان کے لیے ایک بچھڑے کا مجسمہ بنا کر نکالا جو ایک آواز نکالتا تھا۔ "یہی تمہارا معبود ہے اور موسیٰ کا معبود بھی یہی ہے، مگر وہ بھول گئے ہیں۔" (20: 88)

No sooner did Moses, guided by God, deliver them from Pharaoh’s humiliation - He caused Pharaoh and his people to drown before their very eyes - than they inclined themselves to a type of worship akin to Pharaoh’s people: We led the Children of Israel across the sea; and thereupon they came upon people who were dedicated to the worship of some idols of theirs. Said the Children of Israel: “Moses, set up a god for us like the gods they have." (7: 138) Again, Moses had not been gone long for the appointment with his Lord to receive the tablets when the Samiri led them astray as he “produced for them the effigy of a calf, which made a lowing sound. 'This, ’ they said, 'is your deity and the deity of Moses; but he has forgotten.'" (20: 88)

انہیں اپنی صحرائی غذا سے بھی شکایت تھی، جو من و سلویٰ تھی۔ چنانچہ انہوں نے اپنے نبی سے شکایت کی: "موسیٰ! ہم ایک ہی قسم کے کھانے پر اب صبر نہیں کر سکتے۔ اپنے رب سے دعا کیجیے کہ وہ ہمارے لیے زمین کی پیداوار میں سے، ساگ، ککڑی، لہسن، مسور اور پیاز نکالے۔" {(البقرہ: 61)} یہاں اُس گائے کا ذکر بھی ضروری ہے جسے ذبح کرنے کا انہیں حکم دیا گیا تھا، مگر وہ پھر بھی وضاحتیں مانگتے رہے، حیلے بہانے تلاش کرتے رہے اور اپنے نبی اور اپنے رب کے ساتھ بے ادبی سے پیش آتے رہے۔ بار بار وہ موسیٰ سے کہتے: "اپنے رب سے ہماری طرف سے دعا کیجیے کہ وہ ہمیں واضح کر دے کہ وہ گائے کیسی ہو۔" {(البقرہ: 68)} "اپنے رب سے ہماری طرف سے دعا کیجیے کہ وہ ہمیں واضح کر دے کہ اُس کا رنگ کیسا ہو۔" {(البقرہ: 69)} "اپنے رب سے ہماری طرف سے دعا کیجیے کہ وہ ہمیں بتا دے کہ وہ ٹھیک ٹھیک کس قسم کی ہو، کیونکہ ہمارے لیے گائیں آپس میں ملتی جلتی ہیں۔" {(البقرہ: 70)} جب آخرکار ان کے بہانے ختم ہو گئے تو "انہوں نے اسے ذبح کیا، حالانکہ وہ ایسا کرنے کے قریب نہ تھے۔" {(البقرہ: 71)}

They were also dissatisfied with their desert food, which was manna and quails. Thus they complained to their prophet: “Moses! We can no longer put up with one kind of food. Pray to your Lord, then, to bring forth for us some of what the earth produces of green herbs, cucumber, garlic, lentils and onions." (2: 61) Mention should also be made here of the cow they were required to slaughter, yet they continued to demand explanations, seeking excuses and behaving impolitely to their prophet and to their Lord. Time after time they said to Moses: “Pray on our behalf to your Lord to make plain to us what kind of cow she should be. ” (2: 68) “Pray on our behalf to your Lord to make clear to us of what colour she should be.” (2: 69) “Pray on our behalf to your Lord to make plain to us of what exact type she should be, for to us cows are much alike.” (2: 70) When finally they ran out of excuses, “ They sacrificed her, although they had almost left it undone.” (2: 71)

انہوں نے درخواست کی کہ ان کے لیے ایک دن مقرر کیا جائے جس میں وہ کام نہ کریں۔ لیکن جب ان پر سبت کا دن مقرر کیا گیا تو انہوں نے اس کے احکام کی خلاف ورزی کی۔ بعد ازاں جب وہ اس مقدس سرزمین کے قریب پہنچ گئے جس میں داخل ہونے کا خدا نے انہیں حکم دیا تھا، تو وہ رک گئے اور آگے بڑھنے کی ہمت نہ کر سکے، اور ساتھ ہی انہوں نے موسیٰ سے گستاخانہ انداز میں کہا: ’’اس سرزمین میں زبردست لوگ رہتے ہیں، اور جب تک وہ اسے چھوڑ نہ دیں ہم ہرگز اس میں داخل نہیں ہوں گے۔ اگر وہ اسے چھوڑ دیں تو پھر ہم داخل ہو جائیں گے۔‘‘ {5: 22} موسیٰ ﷺ انہیں حوصلہ دیتے رہے اور اس بڑی کامیابی کا یقین دلاتے رہے جو ان کا منتظر تھی، بشرطیکہ وہ وہی کریں جس کا خدا نے انہیں حکم دیا ہے۔ اس کے باوجود ان کی گستاخی اور انکار نے نئی حدوں کو چھو لیا: ’’انہوں نے کہا: اے موسیٰ، جب تک وہ لوگ وہاں ہیں ہم کبھی بھی وہاں داخل نہیں ہوں گے۔ پس تم اور تمہارا رب جاؤ اور دونوں لڑو، ہم تو یہیں بیٹھے رہیں گے۔‘‘ {5: 24}

They requested that a day be assigned to them when they would not work. But when the Sabbath was ordained for them, they violated its rules. Later, when they were close to the Holy Land, which God told them they would enter, they stalled, not daring to go forward, while at the same time they spoke insolently to Moses: “Mighty people dwell in that land, and we will surely not enter it unless they depart from it. If they do depart, then we will enter.” (5: 22) He kept encouraging them, assuring them of the great success awaiting them, if they would only do what God had bidden them to do. Nonetheless, their insolence and disbelief reached new heights: “They said, Moses, we will never go in so long as they are in it. Go forth, then, you and your Lord, and fight, both of you. We shall stay here.” (5: 24)

انہوں نے موسیٰ کو اس سے کہیں زیادہ تکلیف دی، ان سے سوالات کرکے، تجویزیں پیش کرکے، اور یہاں تک کہ بغاوت برپا کرکے۔ مزید برآں، جیسا کہ احادیث میں روایت ہوا ہے، انہوں نے ان پر جھوٹا الزام بھی لگایا۔ اس سورت میں بیان ہوا ہے کہ موسیٰ نے ان سے کس طرح نرمی کے ساتھ سمجھایا: "اے میری قوم! تم مجھے کیوں ایذا دیتے ہو، حالانکہ تم جانتے ہو کہ میں خدا کا وہ رسول ہوں جو تمہاری طرف بھیجا گیا ہے؟" (آیت 5) وہ یقینی طور پر جانتے تھے کہ وہ خدا کے رسول ہیں، لیکن انہوں نے اس حقیقت کو سخت اور پُرزور انداز میں بیان نہیں کیا۔ بلکہ انہوں نے محض ایک نصیحت آمیز یاددہانی کرائی۔ نتیجہ یہ نکلا کہ انہیں ہدایت پر قائم رہنے کے ہر ممکن ذریعے دیے جانے کے باوجود وہ سیدھے راستے سے پھر گئے۔ چنانچہ خدا نے انہیں مزید گمراہی میں چھوڑ دیا اور ان کے دل ہدایت قبول کرنے کے قابل نہ رہے۔ "خدا ظالموں کو اپنی ہدایت نصیب نہیں کرتا۔" (آیت 5) یوں دینِ الٰہی کی امانت ان سے واپس لے لی گئی۔ جب وہ اتنی دور گمراہ ہو چکے تو وہ خدا کا پیغام اٹھانے کے لائق نہ رہے۔

They gave Moses much more grief, putting questions to him, making suggestions, and even starting a rebellion. Furthermore, as related in ahadith, they also falsely accused him. The surah mentions here how Moses remonstrated with them in a friendly way: “My people! Why do you cause me grief, when you know that I am a messenger God has sent to you?” (Verse 5) They knew for certain that he was Gods messenger, but he did not put this fact across in a strong and assertive way. Rather, he simply gave them a remonstrating reminder. The result was that they swerved from the right way after being given every possible means of sticking to it. Hence, God let them go further astray and their hearts were no longer fit to receive guidance. “God does not bestow His guidance upon evildoers.” (Verse 5) Thus their trusteeship of the divine faith was over. They were no longer fit to carry God’s message after they had gone so far astray.

پھر عیسیٰ آئے اور کہا: "اے بنی اسرائیل! میں تمہارے لیے خدا کا رسول ہوں۔" (آیت 6) انہوں نے ان سے یہ نہیں کہا کہ وہ خدا ہیں یا خدا کے بیٹے ہیں یا خدا کا ظہور ہیں۔ وہ محض ایک رسول تھے جنہیں اس لیے بھیجا گیا تھا "تاکہ میرے سامنے موجود تورات کی تصدیق کریں، اور ایک ایسے رسول کی خوشخبری دیں جو میرے بعد آئے گا، جس کا نام احمد ہوگا۔" 6)

Then Jesus came, saying: “Children of Israel! I am God's messenger to you.” (Verse 6) He did not say to them that he was God or the son of God or a manifestation of God. He was simply a messenger sent “to confirm the Torah revealed before me, and to give news of a messenger that will come after me, whose name shall be Ahmad” 6)

اس طرح ہم دیکھتے ہیں کہ دینِ الٰہی مختلف مراحل سے گزرتا ہوا آگے بڑھا، اور یہ تمام مراحل آپس میں مربوط تھے اور ایک ہی سمت میں چلتے رہے، آسمان سے زمین تک پھیلے ہوئے ایک طویل سلسلے کی مانند جس کی کڑیاں ایک دوسرے سے جڑی ہوئی ہیں۔ یہی وہ درست تصویر ہے جو اللہ تعالیٰ کی حکمت اور اس کے نظامِ تشکیل کے شایانِ شان ہے۔ بنیادی طور پر یہ ایک ہی طرزِ عمل ہے، جو ہر مرحلے پر انسانیت کی ضروریات، تجربے، علم اور صلاحیت کے مطابق قدرے مختلف صورتوں میں ظاہر ہوتا رہا، یہاں تک کہ وہ اپنی پختگی کو پہنچ گیا۔ تب آخری مرحلہ آیا اور دینِ الٰہی کی حتمی صورت عطا کی گئی: کامل، مکمل، ایک ایسے پختہ ذہن سے خطاب کرتی ہوئی جس نے گزشتہ تمام تجربات سے فائدہ اٹھایا ہو۔ اس نے وہ راستہ کھول دیا کہ انسانی عقل اس طریقے کے اندر، جو انسان اور اس کی صلاحیتوں کے لیے مقرر کیا گیا ہے، اپنی پوری استعداد کے ساتھ کام کر سکے۔

Thus we see how the divine faith moved from one stage to the next, with all the stages interrelated, moving in the same direction, stretching from heaven to the earth: a long chain moving from link to link. This is the proper image, one worthy of Gods design and constitution. It is basically the same approach, taking slightly different forms, according to what suits the needs, experience, knowledge and potential of humanity at each particular stage, until it reaches full maturity. Only then does the last stage arrive and the final form of divine faith be given: perfect, complete, addressing a mature mind that has benefited from all past experience. It opens the way so that the human mind works to its full potential within the method set for man and his abilities.

یہ بات کہ عیسیٰ علیہ السلام نے احمد کے آنے کی خوشخبری دی تھی، جو نبی ﷺ کا ایک اور نام ہے، اس آیت سے بالکل ثابت ہے، خواہ انجیل میں یہ بات مذکور ہو یا نہ ہو۔ یہ بھی ملحوظ رہے کہ ان انجیلوں کے لکھے جانے کے حالات اور جس طریقے سے وہ لکھی گئیں، اس معاملے میں انہیں قطعی طور پر ناقابلِ اعتماد بنا دیتے ہیں۔

That Jesus gave the news of the impending arrival of Ahmad, (another name of the Prophet Muhammad), is absolutely confirmed by this verse, whether the Gospels mention this or not. Note also that the circumstances surrounding the writing of these Gospels and the way they were written make them totally unreliable on this issue.

قرآنِ مجید جزیرۂ عرب کے یہودیوں اور عیسائیوں کو پڑھ کر سنایا جاتا تھا، جن میں وہ آیت بھی شامل ہے جو نبی کریم ﷺ کے بارے میں فرماتی ہے: "وہ اُمّی نبی جسے وہ تورات اور انجیل میں لکھا ہوا پاتے ہیں۔" (الاعراف: 157) ان کے بعض حقیقی علماء جنہوں نے اسلام قبول کیا، جیسے عبداللہ بن سلام، اس حقیقت کا اعتراف کرتے تھے، لیکن وہ ایک دوسرے کو اسے چھپانے کی تلقین کرتے تھے۔

The Qur’an was read to the Jews and Christians in the Arabian Peninsula, including the verse that speaks of the Prophet Muhammad as “the unlettered Prophet whom they shall find described in the Torah and the Gospel.” (7: 157) Some of their genuine scholars who embraced Islam, such as ‘Abdullah ibn Sallam, acknowledged this fact, but they counselled each other to suppress.

متعدد روایات اس بات کی بھی تصدیق کرتی ہیں کہ یہودی ایک نئے رسول کے آنے کے منتظر تھے؛ اس آمد کو قریب سمجھا جاتا تھا۔ یہی بات عرب کے ان بہت سے مسیحی پادریوں نے بھی کہی جو موحد تھے اور الگ تھلگ زندگی گزارتے تھے۔ لیکن یہودی چاہتے تھے کہ یہ رسول انہی میں سے ہو۔ جب خدا نے چاہا کہ وہ ابراہیم کی نسل کی دوسری شاخ سے ہو، تو یہودیوں نے اسے ناپسند کیا اور اس کی مخالفت کی۔ کہنے کی ضرورت نہیں کہ ایسے معاملات میں قرآن کا بیان حتمی فیصلہ ہے؛ یہی آخری بات ہے۔

Several reports also confirm that the Jews were awaiting the arrival of a new messenger; this was considered imminent. The same was stated by a number of Christian priests in Arabia who were Unitarians, living in isolation. But the Jews wanted this messenger to be one of their own. When God so willed that he should belong to the other branch of Abrahams seed, the Jews disliked and opposed this. Needless to say, the Quranic statement is the ultimate verdict on such matters. It is the final say.

یوں معلوم ہوتا ہے کہ اس کے بعد آنے والی آیات زیادہ تر اس بات سے متعلق ہیں کہ یہودیوں اور عیسائیوں نے اس نبی ﷺ کا استقبال کیسا کیا جن کا ذکر ان کی کتابوں میں موجود تھا۔ ان کی سرزنش کی گئی ہے کہ انہوں نے محمد ﷺ کے ساتھ جو رویہ اختیار کیا، اور اس نئے اور آخری پیغام کو کمزور کرنے کے لیے جو تدبیریں انہوں نے کیں جسے خدا نے باقی تمام ادیان پر غالب کرنا چاہا تھا۔

It seems that the verses that follow are mostly concerned with the way the Jews and the Christians received the Prophet mentioned in their scriptures. They are denounced for the reception they gave Muhammad and for their designs to undermine the new and final message God willed to prevail over all other religions:

لیکن جب وہ ان کے پاس حق کی تمام واضح دلیلوں کے ساتھ آیا تو انہوں نے کہا:

But when he came to them with all evidence of the truth, they said:

یہ تو صریح جادو ہے۔ اُس شخص سے بڑھ کر ظالم کون ہو گا جو خدا پر جھوٹ گھڑے، حالانکہ اُسے تو بس اُسی کے آگے سرِ تسلیم خم کرنے کی دعوت دی جا رہی ہے؟ خدا ظالموں کو ہدایت نہیں دیا کرتا۔

'This is plain sorcery. 'Who could be more wicked than one who invents a falsehood about God, when he is only being called upon to submit to Him? God does not bestow His guidance upon the wrongdoers.

وہ چاہتے ہیں کہ اپنے منہ سے خدا کے نور کو بجھا دیں، مگر خدا اپنے نور کو پورا کرکے رہے گا، خواہ کافروں کو یہ کتنا ہی ناگوار گزرے۔ (آیات 6-8)

They aim to extinguish God's light with their mouths, but God will spread His light in all its fullness, however hateful this may be to the unbelievers. (Verses 6-8)

یہودیوں کا اس نئے دین کے بارے میں رویہ دشمنی، بدخواہی اور حقائق کو مسخ کرنے کا مجموعہ تھا۔ انہوں نے تمام ذرائع اور وسائل استعمال کرتے ہوئے اسلام کے خلاف پرعزم جدوجہد کی، اور یہ سلسلہ آج تک جاری ہے۔ انہوں نے اس پر الزامات عائد کیے: "جب وہ ان کے پاس سچائی کے تمام دلائل لے کر آیا تو انہوں نے کہا: یہ کھلا جادو ہے۔" (آیت 6) یہ ان مشرکین کے الزامات کی بازگشت تھی جن کے پاس نہ کوئی آسمانی کتاب تھی اور نہ ہی انہیں اس نئے دین کی کوئی پیشگی خبر تھی۔ یہودیوں نے مسلم معاشرے میں پھوٹ ڈالنے کی بھی کوشش کی۔ خاص طور پر مدینہ میں مہاجرین اور انصار کے درمیان، اور اوس و خزرج کے دو قبیلوں کے درمیان تفرقہ ڈالنے کی کوشش کی۔ کبھی انہوں نے منافقین کے ساتھ سازباز کی اور کبھی مشرکین کے ساتھ۔ غزوۂ خندق میں جس طرح مشرکین نے مدینہ پر حملہ کیا، اسی طرح یہودی بھی ان کے ساتھ شامل ہو گئے۔ نئے دین کے خلاف ان کی سازشوں میں جھوٹی افواہیں پھیلانا بھی شامل تھا، جیسا کہ اس واقعے میں ہوا جو "واقعۂ إفک" کے نام سے معروف ہے، جس کا اصل مجرم عبداللہ بن ابی بن سلول تھا۔ بعد ازاں انہوں نے انہی ہتھکنڈوں کو عبداللہ بن سبا کی منصوبہ بندی سے ہونے والے واقعات میں استعمال کیا، جو تیسرے خلیفہ عثمان رضی اللہ عنہ کے قتل کا سبب بنے۔

The Jews’ attitude to this new faith was a combination of hostility, evil scheming and misrepresentation. They waged a determined fight against Islam, using all means and resources, and this has continued to the present day. They levelled charges against it: “when he came to them with all evidence of the truth, they said: This is plain sorcery.” (Verse 6) This echoes the allegations of idolaters who had no scriptures and had no advance news of the new faith. The Jews also sought to create discord within the Muslim community. In particular, they tried to create division between the Muhajirin and the Ansar in Madlnah, and between the two tribes of the Aws and the Khazraj. They conspired with the hypocrites at times and with the idolaters at others. They also joined with the idolaters’ attack on Madlnah, as happened in the Battle of the Moat. Their designs against the new faith also included spreading false rumours, as happened in what is known as the story of falsehood in which the main culprit was ‘Abdullah ibn Ubayy ibn Salul. Later, they used the same tactics in the events masterminded by ‘Abdullah ibn Saba’, which led to the assassination of ‘Uthman, the third Caliph.

Thereafter, they tried further to undermine Islam with the fabrications and false stories they managed to infiltrate into hadith, the reports of the history of the Prophet and the books of commentary on the Qur’an.

یہ سب کچھ اس کے بعد ہوا جب وہ اس بات پر پوری طرح عاجز آ گئے کہ قرآن میں خود کوئی جھوٹ داخل کر سکیں۔

All this after they found themselves totally incapable of implanting any falsehood into the Qur’an itself.

یہ جنگ آج تک بلا روک ٹوک جاری ہے۔ صیہونیت اور عیسائی سامراج ہر نسل میں اسلام کے خلاف سازشیں کرتے رہے ہیں اور اس کے خلاف جارحیت شروع کرتے یا اس کی حمایت کرتے رہے ہیں۔

This war has continued unabated until the present day. Zionism and Christian imperialism have continued to scheme against Islam, launching or supporting aggression against Islam in every generation.

انہوں نے مشرقِ اسلامی کے خلاف صلیبی جنگیں شروع کیں، اور مغرب میں اندلس کے مسلمانوں کے خلاف لڑے۔ انہوں نے اسلام کے مرکزی علاقے میں بھی اسلام سے جنگ کی، اور آخری خلافت یعنی خلافتِ عثمانیہ پر یکے بعد دیگرے حملے کرتے رہے، جسے انہوں نے "یورپ کا بیمار آدمی" کہا، یہاں تک کہ اسے ختم کرنے اور اس کے صوبوں کو تقسیم کرنے میں کامیاب ہو گئے۔ اپنی سازشوں کو عملی جامہ پہنانے کے لیے انہیں سرزمینِ اسلام میں جعلی ہیرو تراشنے کی ضرورت تھی۔ جب انہیں اسلامی اقتدار کی آخری علامت، خلافت کو ختم کرنا تھا، تو انہوں نے ترکی میں ایک قومی "ہیرو" گھڑا اور اس کی شبیہ کو سنوارا۔ چنانچہ اتحادی افواج، جو عثمانی دارالحکومت پر قابض تھیں، اس کی فوج کے سامنے پیچھے ہٹ گئیں تاکہ اسے ایک عظیم ہیرو بنا دیا جائے۔ اس طرح وہ خلافت کا نظام اور عربی زبان ختم کرنے، اور ترکی کو باقی مسلم دنیا سے جدا کر کے اسے ایک سیکولر ریاست بنانے میں کامیاب ہو گیا۔ یہود و نصاریٰ آج بھی ایسے جعلی ہیرو تراشتے رہتے ہیں، جب بھی انہیں کسی مسلم ملک میں کسی اسلامی تحریک کو کچلنے اور اسلامی رشتوں کی جگہ دوسرے رشتے قائم کرنے کی ضرورت محسوس ہوتی ہے۔

They launched the Crusades against the Muslim east, and they fought against the Muslims in Andalus in the west. They also fought against Islam in its central area launching one attack after another against the last Caliphate, i.e. the Ottoman Caliphate, which they called ‘the sick man of Europe’, until they managed to destroy it and divide its provinces. They needed to create false heroes in the land of Islam to carry out their schemes against it. When they needed to destroy the Caliphate as the last symbol of Islamic rule, they created in Turkey a national ‘hero’ and groomed his image. Thus, the Allied forces, which were in control of the Ottoman capital, retreated before his army in order to make him a great hero. In this way was he able to abolish the Caliphate regime and the Arabic language, and to separate Turkey from the rest of the Muslim world making of it a secular state. The Jews and Christians continue to create such false heroes whenever they feel the need to smash an Islamic movement in any Muslim country and replace Islamic ties with other bonds.

ان لوگوں کا ارادہ ہے کہ اپنے منہ کی پھونکوں سے خدا کے نور کو بجھا دیں، مگر خدا اپنے نور کو پورا کیے بغیر نہیں رہے گا، خواہ کافروں کو یہ کتنا ہی برا لگے۔ (آیت 8) یہ آیت ایک حقیقت کا اظہار کرتی ہے اور اسلام کے دشمنوں کی ایک قابلِ رحم تصویر پیش کرتی ہے۔ یہ درست ہے کہ وہ نبی ﷺ اور آپ کے پیغام کے بارے میں کہتے تھے کہ "یہ کھلا جادو ہے"۔ یہ بھی درست ہے کہ وہ اسلام کو کمزور کرنے کی سازشیں کرتے رہے۔ یہ ایک افسوسناک منظر ہے کہ وہ خدا کے نور کو اپنے منہ کی ایک پھونک سے بجھانے کی کوشش کرتے ہیں۔ وہ کتنے سادہ لوح اور کمزور ہیں! "مگر خدا اپنے نور کو پورا کیے بغیر نہیں رہے گا، خواہ کافروں کو یہ کتنا ہی برا لگے۔" (آیت 8) اس میں کوئی شک نہیں کہ خدا کا وعدہ ہمیشہ پورا ہو کر رہتا ہے۔ اس نے اپنے نور کو نبی ﷺ کی حیاتِ مبارکہ میں کمال تک پہنچایا، جب مسلم امت ایک زندہ اور عملی صورت میں وجود میں آئی، جو اس نظام کی نمائندہ تھی جسے خدا نے انسانیت کے لیے پسند فرمایا تھا۔ یہ ایک واضح دین تھا جس کی خصوصیات متعین اور روشن تھیں، تاکہ آنے والی نسلیں اس کے نقشِ قدم پر چل سکیں۔ یہ کتابوں میں بیان کیا گیا کوئی نظریہ نہیں، بلکہ تاریخ کا ایک حقیقی واقعہ تھا۔

“They aim to extinguish God's light with their mouths, but God will spread His light in all its fullness, however hateful this may be to the unbelievers” (Verse 8) This verse expresses a fact and paints a pathetic image of those enemies of Islam. It is true that they used to say about the Prophet and his message, ‘ This is plain sorcery'. It is also true that they continued to scheme against Islam, trying to undermine it. It is a pathetic picture we see of them as they try to extinguish God’s light with a blow from their mouths. How naive and weak they are! “But God will spread His light in all its fullness, however hateful this may be to the unbelievers.” (Verse 8) There is no doubt that God’s promise will always come true. He brought His light to fullness during the lifetime of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), when the Muslim community came into being as a living and practical representation of the system He had chosen for mankind. It was a well-defined religion with clearly delineated features so that future generations could follow in its footsteps. It was a fact of history, not a theory explained in books.

اور اس نے اپنی روشنی کو کمال تک پہنچایا جب اس نے مسلمانوں پر اپنی نعمت کو مکمل کیا، ان کے لیے اسلام کو دین کے طور پر پسند فرمایا اور اسے کامل بنا دیا۔ چنانچہ وہ اپنے دین سے محبت کرتے تھے اور اس کی خاطر لڑنے کے لیے بے تاب رہتے تھے۔ ان میں سے ہر ایک اس بات کو پسند کرتا تھا کہ وہ آگ میں ڈال دیا جائے بجائے اس کے کہ وہ کفر کی طرف لوٹ جائے۔ یوں ایمان کی سچائی لوگوں کے دلوں میں اور ان کی دنیا میں زندہ رہی۔ یہ سچائی بار بار سر اٹھاتی رہتی ہے، جو اس بات کا ثبوت ہے کہ یہ اسلام اور اس کے پیروکاروں کے خلاف جاری رہنے والی جارحیت، بار بار کی جانے والی سازشوں اور بے لگام ظلم و ستم کی مہمات کے باوجود زندہ ہے۔ حقیقت یہ ہے کہ خدا کی روشنی کو لوگوں کے منہ بجھا نہیں سکتے، اور نہ ہی اسے آگ اور آہنی ہاتھ والے ان ہتھکنڈوں سے دبایا جا سکتا ہے جن کا سہارا کچھ چھوٹے لوگ لیتے ہیں۔ ظالموں کو، ہیرو بنا کر پیش کیے گئے کٹھ پُتلیوں کو اور صہیونیوں کو شاید یہ لگتا ہو کہ وہ اس مقصد کو حاصل کر لیں گے اور خدا کی روشنی کو بجھا دیں گے، لیکن ان کی تمام کوششیں رائیگاں جائیں گی۔

He also brought His light to fullness when he perfected the favour He bestowed on Muslims, choosing Islam as their religion and making it complete. Thus, they loved their religion and were keen to fight for its cause. Anyone of them would prefer to be thrown in a fire rather than revert to disbelief. Thus the truth of the faith lived in people’s hearts and in their world. This truth continues to spring up time after time, showing that it continues to live in spite of all the sustained aggression, repeated scheming and unabated persecution campaigns waged against Islam and its followers. The fact is that God’s light cannot be extinguished by people’s mouths, nor can it be stifled by fire and iron-fisted tactics to which some small people resort. It may appear to tyrants, stooges made up as heroes and to Zionists that they can achieve this goal and put out God’s light, but all their efforts will come to nothing.

یہ خدا کی مشیت ہے کہ یہ دین غالب آئے۔ لہٰذا، یہ لازمی ہے کہ یہ غالب آ کر رہے گا۔

It is God’s will that this religion should prevail. Hence, it is inevitable that it will:

وہی ہے جس نے اپنے رسول کو ہدایت اور دینِ حق کے ساتھ بھیجا، تاکہ اسے تمام ادیان پر غالب کر دے، خواہ مشرکوں کو یہ کتنا ہی ناگوار ہو۔ (آیت 9)

It is He who has sent His Messenger with guidance and the religion of truth, so that He may cause it to prevail over all other religions, however hateful this may be to the idolaters. (Verse 9)

یہ کہ خدا گواہی دیتا ہے کہ یہ دینِ اسلام "ہدایت اور دینِ حق" ہے، یہ آخری بات ہے۔ خدا کی مشیت پوری ہو چکی ہے، اور یہ دین دیگر تمام ادیان پر غالب آ گیا ہے۔ یہ اپنی فطرت ہی کی بنا پر غالب آیا ہے، کیونکہ کوئی دوسرا دین اپنی فطرت میں اس کا ہم پلہ نہیں۔ مشرکانہ اور بت پرستانہ ادیان اس کے سامنے ایک لمحے کے لیے بھی نہیں ٹھہر سکتے۔ اس کے برعکس الہامی ادیان اسے اپنا آخری اور مکمل روپ پاتے ہیں۔

That God testifies that this religion of Islam is 'guidance and the religion of truth" is the final word. God’s will has been fulfilled, and this religion has prevailed over all other religions. It has prevailed by its very nature as a religion. No other religion compares with it in its nature. Pagan and idolatrous religions cannot stand up to it for a moment. Divine religions, on the other hand, find it as their final and complete version.

لہٰذا، خلاصتاً، اسلام ان ادیان کا کامل اور مکمل ترین روپ ہے، اور وہ قیامت تک اپنی خالص صورت میں محفوظ رہے گا۔

So, in essence, Islam is the perfect and complete version of these faiths, and it will preserve its pure form for the rest of time.

پہلے کے آسمانی ادیان کو کمی بیشی کے ذریعے بگاڑ دیا گیا۔

Earlier divine religions were distorted by omissions and additions.

اس طرح وہ انسانی زندگی کی کسی بھی سمت میں رہنمائی کے قابل نہ رہے۔ اگر وہ تحریف سے محفوظ بھی رہتے تو بھی وہ دین الٰہی کی ابتدائی صورتوں سے زیادہ نہ تھے، جو بڑھتے ہوئے زندگی کے تقاضوں کو پورا نہیں کرتے تھے، کیونکہ خدا نے انہیں صرف ایک محدود مدت تک کام دینے کے لیے مقرر کیا تھا۔

Thus, they became unfit to lead human life in any direction. Even if they had remained free of distortion, they are no more than earlier versions of the divine faith which did not cater for ever-increasing life requirements, because they were intended by God to serve for a limited time only.

یہ اس بات کو ظاہر کرتا ہے کہ ایمان کی حقیقت کے اعتبار سے خدا کا وعدہ پورا ہو چکا ہے۔ جہاں تک عملی زندگی کا تعلق ہے، تو خدا کا وعدہ اُس وقت پورا ہوا جب اسلام کو غلبہ حاصل ہوا اور اُس نے اپنا مستقل نظامِ حکومت قائم کیا۔

This shows that God’s promise has come true from the viewpoint of the nature of faith. As for real life, God’s promise was fulfilled at one time when Islam gained power and established its own system of government.

ایک صدی کے اندر دنیا کے زیادہ تر آباد حصے اس کے زیرِ اقتدار آ گئے۔

Within one century, most of the populated world came under its rule.

پھر یہ امن کے ساتھ ایشیا اور افریقہ میں پھیل گیا اور دعوت کی کوششوں کے ذریعے ابتدائی جہاد کی کوششوں کے دوران اسلام قبول کرنے والوں کی تعداد سے پانچ گنا سے زیادہ لوگوں کو جیت لیا۔ یہ آج بھی پھیل رہا ہے، جبکہ کوئی ایک بھی ریاست اسے مکمل طور پر نافذ نہیں کر رہی۔ صہیونیت اور مسیحی سامراج نے، جنہوں نے اس مقصد کے لیے تراشے گئے 'ہیرو' کے ہاتھوں ترکی میں آخری خلافت کو ختم کر دیا، جبکہ "فی ظلال القرآن" کے ذریعے یہ دعوت آگے بڑھتی رہی۔ یہ خدا کے فضل سے پھیل رہا ہے، باوجود ان تمام سازشوں کے جو اس کی پیش قدمی روکنے اور اسے کمزور کرنے کے لیے گھڑی گئیں، اور ہر جگہ اسلامی احیائی تحریکوں پر ظلم و ستم کے باوجود، جو ان دوسرے 'ہیروؤں' کے ہاتھوں ہو رہا ہے جنہیں صہیونیت اور سامراج پیدا کرتے ہیں۔

Then it moved peacefully into Asia and Africa to win, through advocacy efforts, more than five times the numbers who embraced it during the early Jihad efforts. It continues to spread without having a single state implementing it fully, after Zionism and Christian imperialism In the Shade of the Qur’an destroyed the last Caliphate in Turkey at the hands of the ‘hero* they manufactured for this purpose. It continues to spread by God’s grace, despite all the schemes devised to stop its march and undermine it, and the persecution of Islamic revivalist movements everywhere at the hands of other ‘heroes’ Zionism and imperialism create.

یہ دین انسانیت کی زندگی میں ابھی دوسرے کردار ادا کرنے کے لیے باقی رہے گا۔ یہ خدا کے وعدے کی تکمیل میں غالب آئے گا۔ انسانی کوششیں خدا کی مشیت کو روک نہیں سکتیں، خواہ وہ کتنی ہی طاقتور ہوں اور ان کی تحریف و غلط بیانی کی سازشیں کتنی ہی بدنیتی پر مبنی کیوں نہ ہوں۔

This religion will continue to have other roles to fulfil in the life of humanity. It will prevail in fulfilment of God’s promise. Human efforts cannot stop God’s will, no matter how powerful they may be or how wicked their schemes of misrepresentation are.

یہ آیات اہلِ ایمان کے لیے اس امانت کو اٹھانے کا محرک بنیں جس کے لیے خدا نے انہیں چنا تھا، اس کے بعد کہ اسے یہود و نصاریٰ نے چھوڑ دیا تھا، کیونکہ وہ اس کے وفادار ثابت نہ ہوئے۔ یہ آیات اہلِ ایمان کو یقین دلاتی ہیں کہ وہ محض خدا کی مرضی پوری کرنے کا ذریعہ ہیں۔ یہ آیات نئے ایمان لانے والوں کو بھی یہی محرک اور یقین فراہم کرتی رہتی ہیں، جو اس بات پر پختہ یقین رکھتے ہیں کہ خدا کا وعدہ ہمیشہ پورا ہو کر رہتا ہے۔ یہ آیات آنے والی نسلوں کو بھی یہی محرکات اور تسلی دیتی رہیں گی، یہاں تک کہ خدا کا وعدہ ایک بار پھر لوگوں کی حقیقی زندگی میں پورا ہو جائے، اگر خدا نے چاہا۔

These verses served as motivation to the believers to carry the trust for which God has chosen them, after it was abandoned by the Jews and Christians who were not true to it. These verses reassure the believers that they are simply the means of fulfilling God’s will. They continue to provide such motivation and reassurance to new believers who are certain that God’s promise will always come true. They will give new generations the same motives and reassurance until God’s promise comes to be fulfilled in people’s real life once more, God willing.

جب ایمان کی تاریخ اس طرح بیان کر دی گئی ہو اور دینِ الٰہی کی آخری صورت کے ناگزیر غلبے کا وعدہ کر دیا گیا ہو، تو قرآن اہلِ ایمان سے خطاب کرتا ہے — ان سے جو اُس وقت موجود تھے اور ان سے بھی جو بعد کے زمانوں میں آئیں گے — اور ان کے سامنے اپنی جانوں کا سودا پیش کرتا ہے۔ یہ ایسا سودا ہے جس میں سودے کی چیز ایمان ہے اور اسے حاصل کرنے کا ذریعہ جہاد ہے:

When the history of faith has thus been outlined and the inevitable triumph the final version of the divine faith has been promised, the Qur’an addresses the believers - those living at the time and those of later generations - offering them the bargain of their lives. This is a transaction in which the merchandise is faith and the means to achieve it is Jihad:

اے ایمان والو! کیا میں تمہیں ایسی تجارت بتاؤں جو تمہیں دردناک عذاب سے بچا لے؟ تم خدا اور اس کے رسول پر ایمان لاؤ، اور اپنے مالوں اور اپنی جانوں کے ساتھ خدا کی راہ میں جہاد کرو۔ اگر تم جانتے ہو تو یہ تمہارے اپنے لیے بہتر ہے۔ وہ تمہارے گناہ بخش دے گا اور تمہیں ایسے باغات میں داخل کرے گا جن کے نیچے نہریں بہتی ہیں، اور عدن کے باغات میں پاکیزہ محلات میں [آخرت میں]۔

Believers! Shall I point out to you a bargain that will save you from grievous suffering! You are to believe in God and His Messenger, and to strive hard in God's cause with your possessions and your lives. This is for your own good, if you but knew it. He will forgive you your sins, and [in the life to come] will admit you into gardens through which running waters flow, and into goodly mansions in the gardens of Eden.

یہ عظیم کامیابی ہے! اور [وہ تمہیں] ایک اور چیز عطا فرمائے گا جسے تم دل سے چاہتے ہو: خدا کی طرف سے مدد اور قریب آنے والی فتح۔

That is the supreme triumph! And [He will grant you] yet another thing that you dearly love: help from God and a victory soon to come.

بشارت دیجیے ایمان والوں کو، (آیات 10-13)

Give you the good news to the believers, (verses 10-13)

یہ انداز متعدد صورتوں کو اختیار کرتا ہے، جیسے جملوں کو توڑنا اور پھر جوڑنا، سوال پیش کرنا اور اس کا جواب دینا، الفاظ کی ترتیب کو الٹنا اور بدلنا، یہ سب ایک خاص پیغام کو دل نشین کرانے کے لیے ہے۔ خطاب کا آغاز ایمان والوں کے نام سے ہوتا ہے: "اے ایمان والو!" اس کے بعد ایک پُرکشش سوال ہے۔ خود خدا سوال کرتا ہے اور جواب کی توقع رکھتا ہے: "کیا میں تمھیں ایک ایسی تجارت بتاؤں جو تمھیں دردناک عذاب سے بچا لے؟" کون ہوگا جو یہ جاننا نہ چاہے کہ یہ تجارت کیا ہے اور اس کی شرائط کیا ہیں! مگر یہاں آیت ختم ہو جاتی ہے اور دو جملوں کے درمیان وقفہ رکھا جاتا ہے تاکہ توقع میں اضافہ ہو۔ جواب اُس وقت دیا جاتا ہے جب اس کی دلچسپی بڑھ چکی ہو: "تم خدا اور اُس کے رسول ﷺ پر ایمان لاؤ" چونکہ وہ واقعی خدا اور اُس کے رسول ﷺ پر ایمان رکھنے والے تھے، اس لیے وہ خوش ہوتے ہیں کہ جواب کا یہ حصہ وہ پہلے ہی پورا کر چکے ہیں۔ "اور خدا کی راہ میں اپنے مال اور اپنی جانوں کے ساتھ جہاد کرو۔" یہی اس سورت کا مرکزی موضوع ہے، اور اسے یہاں اس خاص انداز میں اس لیے دہرایا گیا ہے تاکہ ایک ایسے پیغام کی تکرار کی جائے جو پہلے ہی واضح کیا جا چکا ہے۔ خدا جانتا ہے کہ انسانوں کو ایسی تکرار اور اسلوب کی متنوع صورتوں کی ضرورت ہوتی ہے تاکہ وہ موقع کے تقاضوں پر پورا اتر سکیں۔ اسی کا ادراک کرتے ہوئے وہ نظامِ ربّانی کے قیام اور اس کی حفاظت کے لیے اپنی پوری کوشش صرف کریں گے۔

The style employed here uses a variety of forms, such as splitting sentences and reconnecting them, putting forward a question and providing the answer, inversion and transposition all aiming to drive a certain message home. The address starts in the name of faith, “Believers!” It is followed by an inspiring question. It is God who puts the question and holds their expectation of an answer: “Shall I point out to you a bargain that will save you from grievous suffering?” Who would not wish to know what this bargain is and what its terms are! Yet here the verse ends, providing a break between two sentences to add to the expectation. The answer is given when interest in it has been heightened: “You are to believe in God and His Messenger” Since they were truly believers in God and His Messenger, they are happy that this part of the answer is already met by them. “And to strive hard in God's cause with your possessions and your lives.” This is the main theme of the surah, and it is given here in this particular fashion to reiterate a message that has already been clarified. God knows that human beings need such repetition and variety of modes and styles in order to rise to the occasion. Realizing this, they will exert their maximum efforts to establish and preserve the divine system.

سورت اس سودے کو اور بھی پرکشش انداز میں پیش کرتی ہے: "یہ تمہارے اپنے ہی بھلے کے لیے ہے، اگر تم جانتے ہو۔" حق کی معرفت جس شخص کو ہو جائے گی وہ اس بھلائی کو حاصل کرنے کی کوشش کرے گا۔ لیکن جس چیز کو ہمارے لیے بھلائی قرار دیا گیا ہے وہ اگلی آیت میں زیادہ تفصیل سے بیان ہوئی ہے۔ یہ بات اثر کو اور بھی بڑھا دیتی ہے؛ عمومی بیان کے بعد تفصیل دینا بات کو دل نشین کرتا ہے اور اسے اور بھی مرغوب بنا دیتا ہے۔ "وہ تمہارے گناہ بخش دے گا۔" یہ بات اپنی جگہ پر ہی کافی ہے۔ جب آدمی کو خدا کی مغفرت کا یقین دلا دیا جائے تو اسے کسی اور اجر کی کیا ضرورت رہ جاتی ہے؟ جسے خدا کی بخشش یقینی طور پر مل رہی ہو وہ کس چیز کو دریغ سے دیکھے گا؟ لیکن خدا کے فضل کی کوئی حد نہیں، چنانچہ اجر میں آنے والی زندگی کا حصہ بھی شامل ہے۔ خدا "تمہیں ایسے باغوں میں داخل کرے گا جن کے نیچے نہریں بہتی ہوں، اور باغِ عدن کے عمدہ محلات میں۔" یہ سب سے منافع بخش سودا ہے، کیونکہ اس معاہدے کے طے پانے کے لیے بس اتنا درکار ہے کہ مومن اپنی مختصر سی زندگی میں خدا کی راہ میں جہاد کرے۔ اگر اس جہاد میں اس کی جان چلی جائے تب بھی اسے جنت اور ان عمدہ محلات کی صورت میں بدلہ دیا جائے گا، جہاں وہ ہمیشہ کی سرخوشی میں رہے گا۔ "یہی سب سے بڑی کامیابی ہے!" اس لین دین کا بیان یہیں ختم ہوتا دکھائی دیتا ہے۔ بے شک یہ نہایت منافع بخش سودا ہے جو مومن کرتا ہے، دنیا کی زندگی کو آخرت کی زندگی کے عوض دے دیتا ہے۔ وہ شخص جو اپنے سرمائے کا دس گنا منافع پائے، بازار میں ہر کوئی اس پر رشک کرے گا۔ پھر اس شخص کا کیا حال ہوگا جو زمین پر چند دنوں کی زندگی اور اس کے محدود اور تنگ آرام و آسائش کو قربان کر کے خدا کے ساتھ ایسی ابدی زندگی حاصل کرے جو کامل خوشی اور لذت سے بھری ہو اور جس کی کوئی انتہا نہ ہو؟

The surah goes further, presenting the bargain in an even more attractive way: “ This is for your own good, if you but knew it” Knowledge of the truth will encourage the person who knows it to try to obtain this beneficial matter. But the thing that is referred to as being good for us is given in more detail in the next verse. This again heightens the effect even further; providing the details after a general statement drives the point home and makes it even more desirable. “He will forgive you your sins” On its own, this is more than enough. Who would need any further reward when he is assured of Gods forgiveness? Who would begrudge anything if he is certain to obtain Gods forgiveness? But Gods grace has no limit, for the reward also includes something for the life to come. God “will admit you into gardens through which running waters flow, and into goodly mansions in the gardens of Eden” This is the most profitable bargain of all, because all that is needed for this deal to be concluded is that a believer should fight for Gods cause during his short life on earth. Even if this means him losing his life in this fight, he will be compensated for it with heaven and these goodly mansions where he lives in permanent bliss. “That is the supreme triumph!” The account of this transaction appears to conclude here. It is indeed a highly profitable bargain which the believer makes, bartering the life of this world for that of the hereafter. A person who receives a profit ten times his capital will be the envy of everyone in the marketplace. What about one who puts up a few days of life on earth and its limited and narrow comforts to earn an eternal life with God in pure happiness and enjoyment that knows no end?

یہ معاہدہ اُس رات طے پایا جب انصار (مدینہ کے وہ صحابہ) نے نبی ﷺ سے اپنی حمایت کا عہد کیا، اور یہ معاہدہ نبی ﷺ اور عبداللہ بن رواحہ کے درمیان ہوا۔

The deal was concluded between the Prophet (peace be upon him) and ‘Abdullah ibn Rawahah on the night when the Ansar (the Prophets Companions from Madlnah) pledged their support to him.

عبداللہ نے نبی ﷺ سے کہا: "آپ اپنے لیے اور اپنے رب کے لیے جو شرائط چاہیں رکھ لیں۔" آپ ﷺ نے فرمایا: "میری شرط میرے رب کے لیے یہ ہے کہ تم صرف اسی کی عبادت کرو اور اس کے ساتھ کسی کو شریک نہ ٹھہراؤ۔ اور میری اپنے لیے شرط یہ ہے کہ تم عہد کرو کہ تم میری حفاظت کرو گے، جیسے تم اپنی عورتوں اور بچوں کی حفاظت کرتے ہو۔" عبداللہ نے کہا: "اگر ہم اپنے عہد پورے کریں تو ہمارا اجر کیا ہوگا؟" نبی ﷺ نے فرمایا:

‘Abdullah said to the Prophet: “Make whatever conditions you wish, for yourself and for your Lord.” He said: “My condition for my Lord is that you worship Him alone, associating no partners with Him. And my condition for myself is that you pledge you will protect me as you protect your own womenfolk and children.” ‘Abdullah said: “What will our reward be if we honour our commitments?” The Prophet said:

"جنت۔" انہوں نے کہا: "یہ ایک نفع بخش سودا ہے۔ ہم اپنے عہد سے کبھی رہائی نہیں چاہیں گے، اور نہ ہم کسی منسوخی کو قبول کرتے ہیں۔" خدا کا فضل لامحدود ہے۔ وہ جانتا ہے کہ انسان ہمیشہ کسی ایسی چیز کی تلاش میں رہتا ہے جو اسی دنیا میں قریب ہو اور انسانی فطرت کے مطابق ہو۔ اس لیے وہ انہیں اس بات کی خوشخبری دیتا ہے جو اس نے مقرر کر رکھی ہے کہ وہ اس دین اسلام کو اس دنیا میں غالب کرے گا، اور اسی نسل کی زندگی میں اس کے نظام اور قانون کو فتح یاب کرے گا: "اور ایک اور چیز بھی [وہ تمہیں عطا کرے گا] جسے تم بہت پسند کرتے ہو: خدا کی طرف سے مدد اور قریب آنے والی فتح۔ اور مومنوں کو خوشخبری دے دو۔" (آیت 13)

“Paradise.” They said: “It is a profitable bargain. We will never seek release from our commitments, nor do we accept any cancellation.” Gods grace is limitless. He knows that human beings always look for something close, in this world, which fits human nature. Therefore, He gives them the happy news of what He has determined of making this religion of Islam prevail in this world, and making its system and code triumph in the life of that same generation: “And [He will grant you] yet another thing that you dearly love: help from God and a victory soon to come. Give you the good news to the believers.” (Verse 13)

اس مقام پر یہ سودا اُس بلند ترین نفع تک پہنچ جاتا ہے جو صرف خدا ہی دے سکتا ہے، جس کے خزانے کبھی ختم نہیں ہوتے اور جس کا فضل لامتناہی ہے۔ وہ جو کچھ بدلے میں دیتا ہے وہ مغفرت، جنت، پاکیزہ ٹھکانہ اور ابدی سرور ہیں، اور ان تمام نفعوں کے علاوہ وہ ایک قریب آنے والی فتح بھی عطا فرماتا ہے۔ پھر کون ہے جو اُس وقت پیچھے ہٹے یا تذبذب کا شکار ہو، جب خدا اُسے اِس سودے کی خبر دیتا ہے؟

At this point, the bargain attains the point of supreme returns which only God, whose stores are endless, and whose grace is interminable, can give. What He gives in return, then, are forgiveness, heaven, goodly dwelling and eternal bliss, but in addition to all such profits He gives a soon-to-happen victory. Who would hold back, hesitate when God tells him of this bargain?

ان تمام ترغیبات اور خوش آئند امکانات کے ساتھ ایک خیال ہمارے ذہن میں آ سکتا ہے۔ ایک مومن جو اسلامی تصورِ حیات اور کائنات کو جانتا ہے، اور اس تصور نے ہمارے سامنے جو عظیم افق کھولے ہیں ان کی قدر پہچانتا ہے، پھر جب وہ ایمان سے خالی زندگی کو دیکھتا ہے، اپنی تنگ فکروں اور پست سطحوں کے ساتھ، تو وہ ایمان سے خالی زندگی کو ایک لمحے کے لیے بھی برداشت نہیں کر سکتا۔ وہ اس بات میں ایک سیکنڈ کا توقف بھی نہیں کرے گا کہ وہ اللہ کے دین کی جدوجہد میں شامل ہو جائے تاکہ ایمان کے عظیم تصور کو حقیقی زندگی میں قائم کرے، اور یوں وہ باقی نوعِ انسانی کے ساتھ اس کی برتر حقیقت میں زندگی گزار سکے۔ ہو سکتا ہے کہ اسے ایسی زندگی کے سوا کسی اور اجر کی ضرورت ہی نہ ہو، کیونکہ اللہ کے دین کی جدوجہد اپنی ذات میں خود ایک اجر ہے، جو ہمیں اس دنیا میں سکون اور خوشی عطا کرتا ہے۔ مزید برآں، ایسا مومن ایمان سے خالی دنیا میں نہیں رہ سکتا، اور نہ ہی وہ بیٹھا رہ سکتا ہے، بلکہ اس دنیا کو قائم کرنے کی کوشش نہ کرے جو ایمان کے تابع ہو۔ اس طرح وہ جدوجہد کے لیے زبردست جذبے سے سرشار ہوتا ہے، خواہ اس کے نتیجے میں اس پر کچھ بھی گزرے۔

With all this temptation and goodly prospects, a thought may well occur to us. A believer who knows the Islamic concept of life and the universe, and appreciates the great horizons this concept opens up before us, and then looks at life without faith, with its narrow concerns and lowly levels, cannot tolerate life without faith even for a moment. He will not hesitate for a second in joining the struggle for Gods cause in order to establish the great concept of faith in real life, so that he may live with the rest of mankind in its superior reality. It may be that he would not need to have any reward other than such a life, because the struggle for Gods cause is, in itself, a reward, giving us contentment and happiness in this life. Moreover, such a believer cannot live in a world devoid of faith, and cannot sit idle, not striving to establish a world governed by faith. Thus, he is strongly motivated to struggle, no matter what happens to him as a result.

لیکن خدا جانتا ہے کہ انسان سست پڑ سکتے ہیں، جوش ماند پڑ سکتا ہے، کوششیں کمزور ہو سکتی ہیں، اور سلامتی کی محبت انسانوں کو موجودہ حالت پر قانع کر سکتی ہے، حالانکہ اس کا درجہ بہت پست ہوتا ہے۔ اسی لیے قرآن یہ علاج تجویز کرتا ہے، جو ترغیب اور ایسی تمثیلات فراہم کرتا ہے جو جذبات اور جوش کو بڑھاتی ہیں، اور ہر موقع اور ہر ممکنہ ذریعے سے انسانی دلوں اور روحوں کو متاثر کرنے کی کوشش کرتا ہے۔ وہ محض ایمان پر، یا اس ایمان کے نام پر کسی ایک ہی طرزِ خطاب پر انحصار نہیں کرتا۔

God, however, knows that people may slacken, and that enthusiasm may dampen, efforts may wane and love of safety may lead people to accept the status quo, even though its level is too low. Hence, the Qur’an administers this treatment, providing motivation and images to enhance feelings and enthusiasm, making use of every occasion and possible means to appeal to human hearts and souls. It does not rely merely on faith or on one mode of address in the name of this faith.

لہٰذا، یہ سورت ایک نئے اور منفرد خطاب کے ساتھ ختم ہوتی ہے، اور ایسا خطاب جو نئی کشش اپنے اندر رکھتا ہے۔

Hence, the surah ends with a new and distinctive address, and one that carries new appeal:

اے ایمان والو! خدا کے مددگار بن جاؤ، جیسے مریم کے بیٹے عیسیٰ نے حواریوں سے کہا: "خدا کی راہ میں کون میرا مددگار ہے؟" حواریوں نے کہا: "ہم خدا کے مددگار ہیں۔" پس بنی اسرائیل میں سے کچھ لوگ ایمان لائے اور کچھ نے انکار کیا۔ پھر ہم نے ایمان والوں کی ان کے دشمن کے مقابلے میں مدد کی، تو وہی غالب آ گئے۔ (آیت 14)

Believers! Be helpers [in the cause] of God; just as Jesus, the son of Mary, said to the disciples: 'Who will be my helpers in God's cause?' The disciples said: 'We shall be [your] helpers in God's cause. 'And so some of the Children of Israel came to believe whereas others denied the truth. But We have given those who believed strength over their enemy and they were the ones to prevail. (Verse 14)

حواری عیسیٰ مسیح کے شاگرد تھے۔ کہا جاتا ہے کہ ان کی تعداد 12 تھی۔

The disciples were Jesus Christ’s pupils. It is said that they were 12

وہ لوگ جو اُن کے قریب رہے اور اپنے آپ کو اُن سے علم حاصل کرنے کے لیے وقف کر دیا۔ انہوں نے اُن کے بعد بھی اُن کا پیغام اور احکام پھیلانا جاری رکھا۔ یہ آیت ہمیں کوئی تفصیلی واقعہ نہیں بتاتی، بلکہ صرف ایک رویّے کی وضاحت کرتی ہے۔ اس لیے ہم اسے اُسی سیاق میں اور اُسی مقصد کے مطابق دیکھتے ہیں جو وہ پیش کرتی ہے۔

men who were close to him and who dedicated themselves to learning from him. They continued to spread his message and commandments after his term was over. This verse does not give us a detailed story: it simply outlines an attitude. Hence, we look at it in the context it is given and for the purpose it serves.

"اے ایمان والو! خدا کے مددگار بنو۔" (آیت 14)۔ اپنے آپ کو اس عظیم مقام پر رکھو جس تک خدا تمہیں بلند کرتا ہے۔ کیا کوئی مقام اس سے بلند اور عظیم ہے کہ آدمی خدا اور اس کے دین کا مددگار ہو؟ یہ سودا ایسی عزت بخشتا ہے جو جنت اور اس کی خوشیوں سے بھی بڑھ کر ہے: خدا کے مددگار بنو، "جیسا کہ عیسیٰ ابن مریم نے حواریوں سے کہا: 'خدا کی راہ میں کون میرا مددگار ہے؟' حواریوں نے کہا:"

“ Believers! Be helpers [in the cause] of God.” (Verse 14) Place yourselves in this noble position to which He elevates you. Is there a position that is higher and more noble than that of being a supporter of God and His cause? This bargain bestows an honour that is greater than heaven and its happiness: be helpers of God, “just as Jesus, the son of Mary, said to the disciples: 'Who will be my helpers in God's cause?'The disciples said:

"ہم خدا کے دین کے مددگار ہوں گے۔" (آیت 14) انہیں اس کام کے لیے چنا گیا اور یہ اعزاز حاصل ہوا۔ عیسیٰ علیہ السلام آخری نبی اور آخری دین کی خوشخبری دینے آئے تھے۔ یہ بات موزوں ہے کہ محمد ﷺ کے پیروکاروں کو اس مستقل ذمہ داری کے لیے چنا جائے، جیسے مسیح کے حواریوں کو ان کے زمانے میں اس کام کے لیے چنا گیا تھا۔ آیت میں مکالمے کے انداز سے یہ بات صاف ظاہر ہوتی ہے۔

'We shall be [your] helpers in God's cause.'" (Verse 14) They were chosen for this task and earned this honour. Jesus came to give the news of the last Prophet and the last religion. It is only fitting that Muhammads followers should be chosen for this permanent task, just as Christs disciples were chosen for it during their period of time. This is clearly apparent in the way the dialogue is presented in this verse.

لیکن اس کا نتیجہ کیا نکلا؟ "بنی اسرائیل میں سے کچھ لوگ ایمان لائے اور کچھ نے انکار کر دیا۔ مگر ہم نے ایمان لانے والوں کو ان کے دشمن کے مقابلے میں تقویت دی، اور وہی غالب آ کر رہے۔" (آیت 14) اس بیان کی دو طرح تعبیر ممکن ہے: یا تو مسیح کے پیغام پر ایمان لانے والے سب عیسائی ہیں، خواہ وہ اس پیغام کی اصل صورت پر قائم رہے ہوں یا ان کا ایمان تحریف کا شکار ہو گیا ہو۔ خدا نے انہیں ان یہودیوں کے مقابلے میں مدد دی جو خدا پر بالکل ایمان نہیں رکھتے تھے، جیسا کہ تاریخ سے معلوم ہے۔ یا پھر ایمان لانے والے وہی لوگ تھے جو خدا کی توحید پر قائم رہے، ان لوگوں کے مقابلے میں جنہوں نے عیسیٰ کو الوہی مقام دیا، یعنی تثلیث کے قائل ہوئے، یا کسی اور طرح سے گمراہ ہوئے۔ ایسے اہلِ ایمان دلیل کے میدان میں غالب رہے اور ناقابلِ تردید شواہد پیش کیے۔ یا ہم اس آیت کا یہ مطلب بھی لے سکتے ہیں کہ جو لوگ خدا کی توحید پر قائم رہے، ان کی تائید اس آخری دین نے کی جس نے ان کے عقیدے کی توثیق کی۔ خدا نے اس دین کے لیے حتمی فتح مقرر کر دی ہے، جیسا کہ تاریخ میں ہوا۔ یہ آخری مفہوم شاید سب سے زیادہ قرین قیاس ہے۔

But what was the result then? “Some of the Children of Israel came to believe whereas others denied the truth. But We have given those who believed strength over their enemy and they were the ones to prevail." (Verse 14) This statement may be interpreted in one of two ways: either the believers in Christs message are all Christians, whether they remained faithful to its original form or they are those whose faith was subject to distortion. God supported them over the Jews who did not believe in Him at all, as known from history. Or the believers were only those who continued to believe in Gods oneness in defiance of those who gave Jesus divine status, those who believed in the Trinity, or those who deviated in some other way. The believers prevailed in argument, giving irrefutable evidence. Alternatively, we may understand the verse as meaning that those who continued to believe in Gods oneness were supported by the last religion that endorsed their beliefs. God has made the final victory assured to this religion, as happened in history. This last sense is perhaps the most probable.

اس آخری خطاب کا مقصد دینِ آخر کے ماننے والوں کے عزم کو مضبوط کرنا ہے، یعنی ان لوگوں کے عزم کو جو الٰہی پیغام کے وارث ہیں۔ یہ وہ لوگ ہیں جن پر ایک عظیم ذمہ داری عائد کی گئی ہے، یعنی زمین پر خدا کے نظام کا نفاذ۔ انہیں ترغیب دی جاتی ہے کہ وہ خدا کے دین کی حمایت کے لیے آگے بڑھیں۔

The aim of this last address is to strengthen the resolve of the believers in the last religion, the heirs of the divine message. They are the ones charged with a great task, namely the implementation of God s system on earth. They are encouraged to come forward to support Gods cause:

جیسا کہ عیسیٰ ابنِ مریم نے حواریوں سے کہا: "اللہ کی راہ میں کون میرے مددگار ہیں؟" حواریوں نے کہا: "ہم اللہ کی راہ میں آپ کے مددگار ہیں۔" خدا کے دین کی مدد کرنے والے مومنوں کی آخری فتح یقینی ہے۔

“just as Jesus, the son of Mary, said to the disciples: 'Who will be my helpers in God's cause?'The disciples said: 'We shall be [your] helpers in God's cause.'" Eventual victory is assured for believers who support Gods cause.

اس طرح یہ سورت ایک ایسی آیت پر ختم ہوتی ہے جو سورت کے عمومی سیاق اور مضمون سے ہم آہنگ ہے، مگر اس میں ایک خاص رنگ اور اثر بھی ہے۔ یہ آیت پہلے سے موجود رنگوں اور اثرات کے پہلے ہی سے بھرپور تنوع کو مزید تقویت دیتی ہے۔

Thus the surah concludes with a verse that fits the general context and drift of the surah, yet has a special colour and effect. It enriches an already rich variety of colours and effects.
